Based on the observation of theInstitute for Investigation and Development of Geological Disaster Technology (BalaiPenyelidikan dan Pengembangan TeknologiKebencanaanGeologi-BPPTKG) Yogyakarta, today Merapi eruption is recorded on a seismogram with an amplitude of 75 mm and lasted for 450 seconds. Moreover, the eruption resulting in the emergence of a 6,000 meters high ash columnfrom the crater and hot clouds with a maximum distance of 2 kilometers upstream of Kali Gendol.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Several regions in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY), Klaten, Solo, Sukoharjo, and Karanganyar become the area affected by the Merapi volcanic ash-rain. In the main campus area of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, the volcanic ash-rain can be seen on the cars and motorcycles parked, which covered in a thin layer of volcanic ash.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Responding to the volcanic ash-rain that happened on Tuesday morning, the UNS Pulmonologist who is also the Dean of Faculty of Medicine (FK) UNS, Dr. Reviono, dr., Sp. P(K) mentions that the community needs to be careful. This is because the volcanic ash from a volcano eruption has a microparticle under 2\u00b5m that has several dangerous contents that can cause impaired respiratory function.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cTherefore, the dust from volcanic ash, the particles are smooth thus it can enter (our respiratory system). The content consists of silica, iron, asbestos, and Sulphur. If these materials can enter the lungs, it can cause inflammation when the amount is large and it can reduce the ability to filter oxygen in the alveoli,\u201d said Dr. Reviono when contacted by uns.ac.id, Tuesday (3\/3\/2020).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Besides the content of volcanic ash mentioned by Dr. Reviono, there are still major elements such as aluminum and potassium and chemical contents such as silicon dioxide (55%), aluminum-oxide (18%), iron-oxide (18%), calcium oxide (8%), and magnesium-oxide (2.5%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dr. Reviono mentioned that if volcanic dust has reached its maximum level, then the people are advised to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activity. The maximum air quality needed for a human is 150 \u00b5gram\/m3.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To reduce respiratory tract disorders due to volcanic ash, Dr. Revionosuggested wearinga mask when someone is outside.Besides the preventive measures with a mask, another measure to avoid volcanic ash in the house is by installing a wire screen on windows or air vents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThe most effective measures are wearing a mask, minimum a surgical mask. At home we can install screen (wire) on the windows,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Additionally, responding to the soaring price of the mask and its limited quantity, Dr. Reviono said that the community still can do another thing to protect their respiratory tract from volcanic ash, aside from wearing a mask. They can use a handkerchief soaked in water. Even though he added that this measure is not really effective because the pores of the handkerchief are bigger, but this can be used as an alternative to when the supplies of the mask are scarce.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If people force themselves to move outside during the rain of volcanic ash, Dr. Revionois worried that their respiratory tract might get infected. The infection includes acute and chronic infections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIn a short time, the respiratory tract can get bronchitis. An early symptom is a dry cough in the beginning and sputum out. If it is already infected the sputum will be yellow in color. The infection is caused by bacteria or germs. Germs can be removed through vibrating hairs when there is an infection. Chronic if it happens continuously.
