The high demand from the community has made these goods to be scarce in the market. Concerning hand sanitizer and disinfectant, there is a phenomenon in the community in which people made a \u2018self-mixed\u2019 hand sanitizer and disinfectant. Seeing this phenomenon, the Chemical expert from UNS, Prof. Dr. Eddy Heraldy, M.Si, provided his comment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cDisinfectant is toxic which has an acute effect (rapid) and can be chronic (slow). All disinfectant is dangerous for humans because it is used to kill germs (bacteria, fungi, and virus)&#8221;m explained Prof Eddy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Currently, we can easily find community and institution which make hand sanitizer (HS) as an effort to assist or as self-help to clean their hand during a certain period. In this condition, making HS is not a problem as long as the formula and the substances used are safe according to WHO recommendation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Hand Sanitizer recommended by WHO contains ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) with a final concentration of 80% v\/v or isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol) with a final concentration of 75% v\/v; glycerol with a final concentration of 1.45% v\/v; and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) 0.125% v\/v.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Prof. Eddy does not suggest the mixture of HS from makeshift materials. \u201cThe main component of HS is alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol, not <em>ciu<\/em> (red: traditional alcoholic beverage) which has a low level of alcohol or methanol which is more dangerous. This is because oxidized methanol will produce formaldehyde (formalin) which is known to be used for corpse preservative, not food. It is still not suggested to make HS from the most expensive alcoholic beverage which has 40% alcohol content,\u201d explained Prof. Eddy. \u201c(people) can use Betel leaves which is well known as a natural disinfectant, but it is impractical. If there is no HS, instead of struggling, people should just wash their hands using soap or washing soap for a minimum of 20 seconds with running water, the virus will disappear,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Prof Eddy explained that the safe composition of HS is according to the recommendation from the authorized body such as WHO and BP POM (Indonesian food and drugs supervisory committee). For example, to make 1 liter of HS, the compositions are 833.33 mL alcohol (ethanol) 96% v\/v; or 751.5 mL isopropyl alcohol 99.8% v\/v; 41.7 mL H2O2 3%; 14.5 mL Glycerol 98%; then add distilled water or boiled water (sterile) until exactly 1-liter mark on a flask.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On the other hand, the multitude of disinfectant spraying in the community is appreciated by Prof. Eddy. This is an independent effort from the community to maintain their environmental hygiene as long as they use the suggested disinfectant, conducted using the right way, with the right object.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cI never thought the community creativity will be this fast in conducting independent disinfection. Maybe because (they are) in panic, so there are many independent sprayings that we can observe. The positive effect is the home environment, praying places, and other places are clean. The negative effect, there are many who use a disinfectant that may be dangerous and do not follow the dosage, therefore it is dangerous for human and other living things especially without the use of personal protective equipment (PPE),\u201d Prof. Eddy added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The use of proper spraying method (chamber) must employ safe disinfectant for human even though basically, disinfectant is aimed to kill the virus. However, in a pressing occasion, this action should be performed using the disinfectant recommended by the health authority with the allowed concentration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cFor example, if we use ozone, the concentration cannot exceed 0.3 ppm presented for 15 minutes or 0.06 ppm for 8 hours a day. Can we afford to provide ozone? Will it be effective with 30 seconds period for example,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Going back to the function of disinfectant which is a chemical material to prevent infection or contamination by microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi) or considered as drugs to kill bacteria, when it is applied to human, they have to wear PPE or at least google, face shield, and mask.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIn the circular from the Ministry of Health RI concerning the use of Disinfectant Chamber, it is already explained (about the use of disinfectant on a human). Therefore, it is inappropriate if the disinfectant is sprayed directly on a human without appropriate PPE,&#8221; Prof. Eddy added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The government needs to provide immediate and appropriate education if there are misused of B# materials in the community. This effort can be taken by a partnership with a university or an institution that has the authority regarding the matter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIn facing the current situation concerning COVID-19 \u2018<em>Jangan lebay, tapi tidak juga abai<\/em>\u2019 (do not overreact, but do not ignorant).
