(Deputy Public Relations UNS\/Faculty Member of FKOR UNS)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>UNS<\/strong> \u2013 Sports contribute to the social and economic development in the community as admitted by the government. However, since the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, governments in various countries have implemented tight health protocol, including physical distancing and large-scale social distancing which has disturbed sports events and many other aspects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To protect athlete\u2019s and other parties\u2019 health, many sports events, both at national, regional, and international level have been cancelled or delayed until further notice. National Sports Week (<em>Pekan Olahraga Nasional<\/em> &#8211; PON) and National Paralympics Week (<em>Pekan Paralimpiade Nasional<\/em> &#8211; Peparnas), scheduled in October, are also affected by the condition. International sports event, the Olympiad and Paralympics, share a similar fate and will be delayed until 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">With the delay of several large-scale sports events, professional athletes are required to reschedule their training program to maintain their fitness during the stay at home period. Another problem hits these athletes as the delay of the events brings a threat of contract termination from their sponsors. But they are not alone, various other parties linked to the sports industry are also affected by the pandemic. There are a wide variety of businesses in the sports industry, to mention a few, leagues organizer, events, travel businesses, tourism, infrastructure, transportation, catering, and media broadcasting. The economic value of the sports industry is indeed fantastic and now there is a threat that it will get plummeted due to the disturbance in the sports industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Another impact of Covid-19 is on the socio-cultural aspect of the community. As widely known many community groups love sports, in this case, sports that have a function to maintain communication and bridge intergroup and intergeneration relationship. Through sports, various groups in the community can play a more crucial role in social transformation and development, particularly in the community that experiences disintegration. This enables sports to be utilized as a tool to create an opportunity to learn and access the marginalized population.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">World sports federations, such as FIFA, has shown their concern over the danger of Covid-19. FIFA as the parent of the world soccer federation has collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) by launching the &#8216;Pass the Message to Kick Out Coronavirus&#8217; campaign campaigned by famous soccer players in 13 languages. This campaign aims to invite the global community to follow the five key activities to stop the spread of Covid-19. This campaign also explains ethics coughing, not touching one&#8217;s face, maintaining physical distance, and staying at home if you feel unwell.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In the uncertain condition caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, all concerned institutions in the sports industry are uniting by providing support in online discussions which will facilitate them to share ideas, problems, and challenges they experienced. They also try to find an innovative solution for the bigger social problem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The closure of education institution due to the pandemic also affects sports education sector which consists of various stakeholders, including the ministry and local authority, public and private education institution, sports organization and athletes, NGO and business community, teachers, scientists and trainers, parents, and students who are mostly the young generation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">When the world is recovering from the pandemic, it is necessary to pay attention to the safety of sports events at all levels, especially for sports organizations. In the short term, it includes the adaptation on ensuring the safety for athletes, fans, and vendors. Whereas in the medium term in facing the global recession and preparing anticipation efforts, participative actions are needed in sport organizations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The Covid-19 pandemic has led to the closure of fitness center, stadium, swimming pool, dance studio, fitness, physiotherapy center, garden and playground. As a result, many people cannot exercise, individually or in a group, and even to perform physical activities outside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Currently, the community has lower physical activities, long period of gadget usage, irregular sleep patterns, and poor eating patterns. This lifestyle poses a risk to increase weight and reduce fitness. Families with low income are also vulnerable to the negative effect of stay at home because they tend to have an inadequate house and limited space which makes it difficult for them to do physical exercise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To ensure that people in various part of the world can maintain their fitness, WHO recommended that people have 150 minutes of activities and 75 minutes of physical activities every week. The benefits of regular exercise like this are proven to help reduce anxiety and fear due to crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In this context, the lack of access to routine exercise might causes problems in the immune system, physical health, including exacerbating existing diseases caused by a sedentary lifestyle. The lack of exercise and physical activities also affect mental health, increases the risk of stress or anxiety because of the isolation from normal social life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Working out at home with no supporting equipment and the limited room is still possible. For people who spend a lot of time sitting there are options to increase physical activities during the day, for examples by performing stretch up, doing house chores, climbing stairs, or dancing to music. Besides that, they also have internet access, there is much information on how to be active during the pandemic that they can access through various social media platforms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It is expected that the actors in the sports industry can compromise for collective benefits by utilizing the existing facilities. Professional athletes continue their fitness training, sports facilities can be maintained and preparation can be conducted for the new normal policy in sports with one hope that after everything goes back to the normal condition, sports events can be carried out well. <strong>(*)<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: Dr. Deddy Whinata Kardiyanto, S.Or., M.Pd.
