UNS<\/strong> \u2014 The undergraduate program in Management Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a virtual Technical Assistance: Case Methods-Teaching and Writing in the Kampus Merdeka Competition Program (PKKM) on Tuesday Selasa (27\/07\/2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the event attended by more than 40 faculty members, the Management Program UNS invited Dr. Marleen Dieleman from the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School. Dr. Dieleman is an associate professor and Founding Editor of Family Series-Sage Business Cases that has published more than 25 teaching cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As reported by feb.uns.ac.id, Dr. Dieleman delivered material on teaching case writing, starting from the definition, tips and tricks of teaching case writing, and discussion with participants. \u201cTeaching case aims to provide opportunities for students to learn about something independently,\u201d Dr. Dieleman explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She continued with the explanation on the types of reaching cases, including the primary, secondary, and experiences teaching cases. The primary case is developed based on the information collected directly from interviewees through interviews or observation, while the secondary case is developed from information that is available in secondary sources, such as news and reports. Primary cases could only be published with permission from the sources, the person or company that provides information. \u201cWe don\u2019t need this kind of permit for secondary cases; we only need to add the sources of information or the data we used,\u201d Dr. Dieleman stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Undergraduate<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Further, she explained that the case study consists of two parts, a teaching case handed to students and a teaching note that teachers will use to lead the discussion. In preparing a case study, a writer needs to pay attention to the title to attract reviewer or publisher attention. Authors should also pay attention to the positioning paragraph that explains and introduces the case or issue discussed\u2014followed by the background that explains the condition surrounding the cases for those who are not familiar with the environmental setting of the industry. Teaching note consists of summary, learning objective, questions, and analysis for teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the material, participants were grouped into four small groups to discuss an interesting topic for a case study. After the discussion, a representative is allowed to deliver their idea and discuss it with Dr. Dieleman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Dieleman thanked all participants for joining the event and for all questions asked. She hoped that she could receive a case manuscript from Indonesia. Humas UNS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
