UNS<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 The Master’s Program in Geography Education<\/a> at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has successfully organized The 2nd International Conference on Anthropocene, Global Environmental Change, and Powerful Geography (ICoAGPG) 2024<\/a><\/em>. The conference, themed “From Crisis to Opportunity: Adapting and Mitigating to Climate Change for Sustainable Development<\/em>,” was attended by over 200 participants online, both from within Indonesia and abroad. The event took place on Saturday (10\/8\/2024) via Zoom Cloud Meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference was officially opened by Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Business, and Information. He emphasized that the 2nd ICoAGPG could significantly contribute to sustainable development. Prof. Irwan expressed confidence that the contributions of the participants would present fresh perspectives and innovations in the field of geography. The Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP)<\/a> UNS, Prof. Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si., also extended appreciation to the Geography Education Program for organizing this event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chair of the 2nd ICoAGPG 2024, Dr. Rita Noviani, S.Si., M.Sc., explained in her opening remarks that this year’s theme focuses on the importance of transitioning from a crisis mode to proactively seeking opportunities. She expressed hope that participants would explore the concept of powerful geography, understand the spatial relationships and patterns that shape our world, and promote effective climate action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This conference brings together academics, researchers, policymakers, and leading practitioners from various fields to share insights, strategies, and solutions for adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change,” Dr. Rita said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference featured two sessions of discussions and presentations from experts in related fields. The keynote speaker, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Dimyati, M.Sc., Chair of the Indonesian Geographical Association (IGI),<\/a> presented on “Spatial Data Analysis for Sustainable Development<\/em>,” with the session moderated by Prof. Dr. Chatarina Muryani, M.Si. In his presentation, Prof. Dimyati highlighted the importance of utilizing remote sensing and integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with Artificial Intelligence (AI), a complex approach known as Geo AI. This development can be employed in disaster research in Indonesia, and the results can inform policy-making. He noted that current challenges in spatial planning involve balancing investment considerations with the potential for natural disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first session of the 2nd ICoAGPG 2024 also featured Dr. Sugiyanto, M.Si., M.Si., who discussed “The Power of GeoCapabilities to Build Learners’ Characters for Global Competitiveness and Sustainability<\/em>.” Dr. Sugiyanto argued that the GeoCapabilities approach posits that individuals can develop greater potential when they acquire a deep geographical understanding, enabling them to think with a more profound geographic perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second session featured Dr. rer. nat. Simone Sandholz, M.Eng., from United Nations University, and Cynthia Ratih Susilo, Ph.D., from the University of Leuven, moderated by Dr. rer. nat. Nurhadi, S.Ant., M.Hum. Dr. Simone Sandholz presented on “Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies for Climate Change<\/em>,” emphasizing the importance of adaptive social protection to ensure and promote community resilience against various covariate risks, including natural and climate-related hazards. This involves integrating social protection, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk management. The final session concluded with a presentation by Cynthia Ratih Susilo, Ph.D., on “Mitigation and Adaptation for Building Resilient and Sustainable Cities<\/em>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
