UNS — Writing an essay or opinion to get published in mass media is one of the excellent methods to convey our ideas to a wide audience. In preparing a qualified article or opinion, the author needs to consider certain aspects. Riwi Sumantyo, SE., MM., a lecturer of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, whose writing has been published in various media outlets, shares four important aspects to consider.

Covering economics topic, Riwi reveals that the priority in writing for media outlets is timeliness. One of the methods to enhance timeliness is to linking articles written with a historical event or the recent event happening in society at that time. “When there are an idea and momentum for it, write it right away. A little late in conveying our thought it will be expired,” Riwi states during a ‘Popular Article Writing for Mass Media Training’, organized by FEB UNS, Thursday (11/2/2021).

The second aspect is using simple and straightforward language due to the limited space provided by the media outlets. An author can deliver their views or idea directly. No need to link too much relevant news regarding the highlighted phenomena, because there is a chance that readers already know from the available news.

The third is the novelty or originality of an idea. This aspect is important, especially in mass media with high competition. An ordinary article has a small chance to get published. Lastly, the article written must not too heavy and theoretical. One of the methods is by creating a provocative title. When readers find the title, they will be provoked and interested to read the article. Of course, by still paying attention to the quality and relevance of the news content.

“For instance, a title ‘technique to manage investment’, will attract readers’ interest. But, a title such as ‘tips on avoiding investment scams’ have a higher chance to get published,” he added.

Regarding ideas for writing, Riwi states that ideas can come from many sources such as daily problems. From certain phenomena, we can write up to 5 articles. For a beginning, small notes can help the author to plan what to write and prepare a detailed framework to sharpen the argument. For authors who familiar with mass media publications, this step is not needed.

“Collecting data, facts, references, and works of literature. Most importantly, you need to write it right away. If it becomes a burden, then we will never start writing,” Riwi says. Humas UNS
