Javanese Culture Intensive Course

This Javanese culture intensive course on Javanese and Indonesian cultured is aimed for introducing and exposing the students into the multiple aspects of Indonesian way of generally and Javanese especially as the main focus.

The syllabus is designed for foreigners who need basic information and knowledge about Indonesian and Javanese Culture. The result of learning process can be used for multiple used for multiple purposes on both academic and professional reasons.

The intensive course consist of in-class meetings and outing classes done in 6 weeks. In class meetings are held in Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts, Sebelas Maret University and outing classes are held in Solo area and surroundings. Each course is creditted and acknowledged by UNS curriculum.

In classes meetings are held Monday-Wednesday 8:00 a.m. – 2 p.m. The courses offered are Javanese Cultural History, Sociology of Javanese Society, Javanese Language and Literature

Javanese Society and Arts.

Whereas, the outing classes are held on Thursday and Friday. The options of the location of the outing classes are as follows:

  • Historical sites: Cetho and Sukuh Temple, Kraton, Sangiran
  • Natural Sites: Tawangmangu, Selo, the Volcano
  • Culinary sites: Solonese traditional food, Batik-making sites and the making of Gamelan
  • Anthropology trip: Solonese and their daily life
  • Daily Solonese: Traditional market, traditional transportation, farming and professions.

The purposes of the outing class are to expose the students to real life in Solo and surrounding to have deeper understanding on sociological and cultural condition of Indonesian and Javanese society represented by Solo. In addition, participants also have access to learn the basic skills of traditional arts and culture found in Solo such as dancing, playing gamelan, batik making, etc.

(minimum 4 participants per class, additional cost will be applied in the case of less than 4 participants)
