UNS— The annual assessment is conducted by AppliedEdu, a Singaporean education technology firm that has tracked university performance across the region since 2021, providing prospective students, families, and policymakers with an objective view of educational standards.

Supervised by the independent AppliedEdu Ranking Advisory Board (RAB), the evaluation combines administrative records, employment figures, bibliometric indicators, and direct feedback from student satisfaction and peer-nomination surveys.

“The 2027 assessment evaluates universities across six core dimensions,” said Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si. “Teaching and learning carry the primary focus at 40 percent, followed by graduate employability and research output at 15 percent each. Institutional reputation, community outreach, and internationalization make up 10 percent each.”

To gauge research visibility and impact, the advisory board pulls publication and citation data from Scopus and Google Scholar, as well as institutional media presence, monitored via Google News. On the employment front, the index reviews outcomes for recent graduates within their first six months—tracking those who enter the workforce, launch independent ventures, or pursue advanced degrees. Internationalization scores reflect the proportion of international students and overseas faculty on campus.

Unlike several long-standing global league tables, AppliedEdu does not track innovation as an isolated category. The framework intentionally prioritizes classroom quality and real-world career readiness, while maintaining traditional benchmarks for scholarly research, community involvement, and cross-border partnerships.

For UNS, breaking into the regional top 12 provides both clear institutional validation and a practical roadmap for the coming academic years. Moving forward, the university continues to channel resources into teaching standards, applied research, community initiatives, and international academic ties to strengthen its regional footprint. UNS PUBLIC RELATION

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) has officially formalized a strategic partnership with PT JAPFA Comfeed Indonesia Tbk through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Implementation of the Higher Education Tridharma, with a dedicated focus on advancing national food security. The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas Office in Jakarta on Wednesday (20/5/2026).

The signing was witnessed by the Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, Prof. Dr. Ir. Rachmat Pambudy, M.S., alongside senior ministry officials, as well as institutional leadership delegations from UNS and PT JAPFA Comfeed Indonesia Tbk.

Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., emphasized that this partnership represents a strategic step to bolster the academic sector’s contribution to the national food security agenda through direct synergy between academia, industry, and the government.

“According to the Global Food Security Index (GFSI), Indonesia currently ranks 63rd out of 113 countries. This must serve as a wake-up call for all of us to build a food system that is self-reliant, adaptive, and free from chronic import dependency,” stated Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si.

Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si. explained that climate volatility, global geopolitical instability, and ongoing population growth make cross-sectoral collaboration indispensable to fortifying the domestic food architecture. He expressed gratitude for the facilitation provided by the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, noting that Bappenas’s active endorsement reflects food security’s status as a critical national priority requiring comprehensive pentahelix cooperation.

“UNS refuses to remain an ivory tower confined to theoretical lectures and laboratory experiments. We stand ready as an active collaborator bridging scientific innovation with the concrete needs of industry and the public,” Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si. added.

Through this framework, UNS and JAPFA will pursue collaborative programs spanning education, applied scientific research, community development, human resource training, agrifood technology, and veterinary health.

Concurrently, Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, Prof. Rachmat Pambudy, underlined the urgency of cross-sector alignment in meeting systemic global pressures, particularly climate change and its cascading effects on crop cultivation, livestock production, and overall public health. He noted that climatic shifts disrupt botanical and livestock behavior, trigger emerging diseases, and necessitate research-driven, technological solutions.

“Collaboration that creates real synergy drives acceleration. It is not enough merely to collaborate; partnerships must deliver actionable, measurable solutions,” said Prof. Rachmat Pambudy.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Rachmat Pambudy, M.S. further advocated for the commercial and scientific exploration of Indonesia’s megabiodiversity, highlighting native botanicals and natural compounds as rich sources of innovation for both human and veterinary applications. He noted that Indonesia possesses significant potential to pioneer traditional tropical Indonesian medicine anchored in its rich biodiversity.

Representatives from JAPFA affirmed that collaborative engagement between industry, academia, and government forms the primary pillar for navigating future food security challenges. Having operated as a leading integrated agrifood enterprise for more than five decades, JAPFA considers proprietary research and technological innovation pivotal to building resilient, productive, and sustainable agricultural ecosystems. Leveraging its research infrastructure and business units, JAPFA continues to advance animal health technologies, including the manufacturing of veterinary vaccines and pharmaceuticals to drive national livestock productivity.

This cross-sector partnership is designed to extend well beyond contractual formalities by establishing concrete, sustainable initiatives that benefit academia, the agrifood industry, and civil society, while decisively reinforcing Indonesia’s food sovereignty.

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, in partnership with Kompas.id and Djarum Foundation, has reaffirmed its commitment to preparing eco-conscious youth while strengthening digital literacy amid accelerating technological advancements. This joint initiative took shape through an educational and youth empowerment forum titled “Digital Literacy, Eco-Conscious Campus” (Kampus Darling Literasi Digital), convened at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium, UNS, on Wednesday (20/5/2026).

Speaking at the event, Communications Director of Djarum Foundation, Mutiara Diah Asmara, underscored the essential role of digital literacy in an interconnected world. She emphasized that digital competence transcends social media proficiency, demanding critical reasoning, objective content verification, and constructive technology adoption.

“We share a collective obligation to navigate social platforms responsibly and resist misleading narratives and hate speech. Simultaneously, we are confronted by the urgent realities of climate change, extreme weather, and accelerating environmental degradation,” Asmara stated. She emphasized that environmental preservation cannot be addressed in isolation, requiring broad-based solidarity (gotong royong) across all sectors. “Higher education campuses provide both an educational foundation and a real-world testing ground for establishing sustainable practices.”

UNS Vice Rector for Planning, Partnerships, Internationalization, and Information, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., QCRO, commended the high student engagement at the forum. He highlighted UNS’s institutional commitment to green governance through its dedicated Subdirectorate of Green Campus and Sustainable Development Goals, established to systematically drive campus sustainability initiatives.

Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., QCRO also recognized Kompas.id and Djarum Foundation for sponsoring 1,000 free one-year subscriptions to Kompas.id for UNS students, providing access to verified reporting on climate affairs and governance.

“We want our students to have direct access to authoritative, reliable journalism rather than unverified sources. Access to credible reporting is fundamental to building an informed civic culture,” he noted.

The forum featured keynote sessions from the Head of the UNS Subdirectorate of Green Campus and SDGs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Murtanti Jani Rahayu, S.T., M.T., and the Editor-in-Chief of Harian Kompas, A. Haryo Damardono. Addressing municipal waste concerns, Prof. Dr. Ir. Murtanti Jani Rahayu, S.T., M.T. cautioned against the excessive consumption of single-use plastics, including straws, cups, and bottled water.

“A single plastic straw requires more than 200 years to break down, while plastic caps take roughly 20 years. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) water bottles can take up to 400 years to decompose naturally. This persistent accumulation represents a major threat to ecosystem stability,” Prof. Dr. Ir. Murtanti Jani Rahayu, S.T., M.T. warned.

The session called on students to adopt reusable containers—supported by university water-refill stations—and urged universities to manage institutional waste streams responsibly. Given dense campus operations, academic institutions generate notable volumes of solid refuse, alongside electronic and battery waste requiring hazardous waste (B3) disposal protocols. Panellists advocated for practical circular economy measures, including extended product life cycles, repairs, and material reuse, to divert post-consumer waste away from municipal landfills.

The program concluded with an interactive dialogue featuring Bakti Lingkungan Djarum Foundation (BLDF) Program Officer Dandy Mahendra and environmental digital creator Jerhemy Owen, examining how Generation Z can harness creative media production to drive environmental awareness and climate advocacy. UNS PUBLIC RELATIONS

Spanning five months of intensive fieldwork from August to December 2025, the milestone establishes UNS as the first and only academic institution in Indonesia entrusted as an official Principal Investigator by the Vienna-based World Values Survey Association.

The milestone was presented during a press briefing at the UNS Rectorate Building on Monday (18/5/2026) by WVS Wave 8 Principal Investigator and Head of the UNS Faculty of Psychology Research Team, Dr. Phil. Ayu Okvitawanli, alongside team member Dr. Moh. Abdul Hakim. Dr. Okvitawanli announced that the findings, along with analytical infographics, will be made openly accessible on the faculty’s website.

The nationwide survey utilized face-to-face structured interviews encompassing more than 300 questionnaire items across 14 core thematic pillars. Employing a rigorous multistage random sampling method to ensure national demographic representation, the research team surveyed 2,306 respondents across 247 sub-districts in 18 Indonesian provinces.

“This appointment represents international recognition of the research capacity and scientific rigor upheld by the Faculty of Psychology at UNS,” said Dr. Okvitawanli. “We adhered to exacting methodological protocols because this dataset will be integrated and compared alongside data from 90 other nations, serving as a definitive global scientific benchmark for years to come.”

Initiated in 1981 by the late Professor Ronald Inglehart, the World Values Survey is widely recognized as the world’s largest and most authoritative longitudinal study of human values and cultural change. Over eight iterative waves spanning more than four decades, the project has surveyed over 400,000 respondents across 90 countries. WVS monitors foundational shifts in societal attitudes, including interpersonal trust, democratic governance, religious and familial institutions, civic engagement, environmental protection, and emerging technologies. Indonesia has participated in the WVS framework since Wave 4 (2001), giving the country one of Southeast Asia’s longest uninterrupted historical records of empirical value dynamics.

The Wave 8 dataset carries significant strategic value across academic and public policy arenas. Internationally, it allows for cross-national comparative analyses with ASEAN members, G20 nations, and emerging economies. Domestically, the 2001–2025 longitudinal trajectory provides an empirical lens into Indonesia’s societal transformation over 24 years—spanning the post-Reformasi consolidation, widespread digital transition, the 2008 financial shocks, the COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequent sociopolitical developments. These empirical baselines will provide evidence-based insights for government ministries, legislators, and civil society organizations shaping public policy across education, religious affairs, institutional democracy, and social welfare.

Following the conclusion of fieldwork, the UNS research team has commenced data processing, cleaning, and verification in accordance with WVS Association data quality standards.

The validated national dataset will be submitted to the WVS headquarters in Vienna for inclusion in the global database and subsequent open-access publication on the official World Values Survey website. The research team also plans to publish peer-reviewed papers in high-impact international academic journals and host multi-stakeholder dissemination forums across Indonesia.

Dr. Moh. Abdul Hakim expressed his gratitude to UNS for institutional backing through its international collaboration grant scheme, as well as to partner institutions—Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia and The Education University of Hong Kong—for their active academic collaboration throughout the research lifecycle. UNS PUBLIC RELATIONS

UNS — The Faculty of Engineering (FT) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a special Connect and Sharing with Alumni session featuring one of its distinguished alumni, Thomas Eppe Safanpo, who currently serves as the Regent of Asmat Regency in South Papua Province. Thomas is an Alumnus of the Architecture Study Program at UNS, class of 1996.

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering UNS, Wahyudi Sutopo, explained that the Connect and Sharing with Alumni initiative is part of the faculty’s ongoing effort to strengthen alumni networks while presenting real-world inspiration for students. According to him, FT UNS alumni have made remarkable contributions across various sectors, including government, industry, and society.

“Through this program, students can directly learn from the experiences of alumni who have successfully contributed at both national and regional levels. We hope the spirit of leadership and public service demonstrated by our alumni will inspire FT UNS students,” Prof. Wahyudi stated during the event held at the FT UNS Seminar Room on Friday (8/5/2026).

During the discussion session, Regent of Asmat, Thomas Eppe Safanpo, encouraged students to continuously develop their competencies, adaptability, and dedication to community service. He emphasized that engineering graduates are expected not only to possess strong academic capabilities, but also social sensitivity and leadership skills.

Thomas expressed his happiness at returning to FT UNS after nearly three decades. According to him, the faculty has undergone significant transformation and growth since his years as a student.

“I feel truly delighted to return to this place. After nearly 30 years, I can see tremendous progress and development within FT UNS. Back in our time, the faculty only had three departments: Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Mathematics. Today, it has expanded with many new study programs and continues to grow remarkably,” said Thomas, who in 2026 received the Outstanding Alumni Award from UNS.

On the occasion, the Regent of Asmat also recalled the long-standing educational partnership between UNS and the government in Papua, dating back to the era when the region was still known as Irian Jaya. Each year, approximately five to ten Papuan students were sent to pursue higher education at UNS across various faculties, particularly in science-related fields such as Medicine, Agriculture, Engineering, and Education.

“I was one of the students given the opportunity to study at UNS, and I personally experienced how valuable that education has been for the people of Papua,” he remarked.

He also conveyed his appreciation to UNS, its lecturers, and the entire academic community for the opportunities and guidance provided throughout his educational journey.

Looking ahead, Thomas expressed hope that educational cooperation between UNS and the government of South Papua could be further strengthened, including the reopening of special classes for Papuan students similar to programs previously implemented. According to him, such initiatives are essential for advancing human resource development in Indonesia, particularly in Papua.

In addition to educational collaboration, UNS and the Government of South Papua Province previously signed a memorandum of understanding on 17 April 2026. The partnership covers various sectors, including education, research, and technological development.

Through this collaboration, FT UNS is expected to contribute to strategic studies and development initiatives, including coastal area development, sea embankment projects, and seawater treatment technology to provide clean water for local communities.

These initiatives are considered highly relevant given South Papua’s vast coastal region and its strategic location bordering Australia, which holds enormous development potential.

Furthermore, opportunities are also being explored for student community service programs (Kuliah Kerja Nyata / KKN) in South Papua, tailored to regional development priorities, including energy, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure sectors.

The forum also highlighted that the development of Papuan human resources should not focus solely on formal education, but also on character building, mindset development, and the ability to adapt within multicultural environments.

Therefore, Papuan students studying at UNS are encouraged to interact and collaborate with students from diverse regions across Indonesia in order to gain broader social experiences and stronger national perspectives.

“We want Papuan students not only to acquire academic knowledge, but also to grow within an environment that nurtures social competence, adaptability, and a strong sense of nationalism,” he concluded.

UNS — Students from the Special Education Study Program of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta organized a community training program on producing natural dishwashing soap for residents of Gadingan Hamlet, Trunuh Village, South Klaten, on Saturday (9/5/2026). The activity was attended by 24 local women residents and was also joined by the Head of Neighborhood Unit (RW 04) and local community leaders.

The training program aimed to enhance community skills in utilizing natural ingredients that are easily found in the surrounding environment and transforming them into environmentally friendly household products with economic value. Through hands-on practice sessions, participants were introduced to every stage of producing natural dishwashing soap, ranging from ingredient preparation and mixing processes to product packaging.

This initiative formed part of a community empowerment program initiated by UNS Special Education students under the theme “Strengthening Family Economic Independence through the Production of Natural Soap in Gadingan Hamlet.” Beyond serving as a safer and eco-friendly household alternative, the program was also designed to open opportunities for small-scale home-based businesses within the community.

Head of the Impactful Learning Grant Team, M. Husain Yassar, explained that the activity emerged from the community’s need for practical skills that could be directly applied in daily life.

“Through this training, we hope that the women of Gadingan Hamlet will not only gain new knowledge, but also be able to utilize these skills both for household needs and potential home business opportunities,” M. Husain Yassar told uns.ac.id on Wednesday (13/5/2026).

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has officially opened the 2026 Independent Admission Selection as part of its commitment to expanding access to higher education for all levels of society in Indonesia. The UNS Independent Admission Selection is designed to provide broader, more inclusive, and equitable opportunities for prospective students from various backgrounds and with diverse potentials.

During the launching event of the UNS Independent Admission Selection on Monday (11/5/2026), the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., stated that according to the Regulation of the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Number 3 of 2026 concerning Student Admissions for Diploma and Undergraduate Programs at State Universities, public universities may admit students through three pathways: the National Selection Based on Achievement (SNBP), the National Selection Based on Test (SNBT), and the Independent Admission Selection.

“Alhamdulillah, the SNBP results were announced on March 31, 2026. A total of 2,432 applicants to UNS were declared successful. The accepted students came from various regions across Indonesia, covering 185 regencies/cities from 31 provinces. The total number of SNBP applicants reached 40,042, an increase of 3% compared to 2025,” said Prof. Hartono, who was accompanied by the Vice Rector for Academic and Research Affairs, Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si.; Head of the UNS Student Admission Office (SPMB), Prof. Drs. Sutarno, M.Sc., Ph.D.; and Head of the Vocational and Undergraduate Program Division, Ir. Widiyanto, S.P., M.Si., Ph.D.

Meanwhile, for the SNBT pathway, the Computer-Based Written Test (UTBK) held from April 21–29, 2026, was successfully conducted. A total of 26,981 participants took the test at the UNS UTBK Center.

“We would also like to inform you that the number of applicants applying to study programs at UNS through the SNBT pathway reached 91,613. The SNBT results will be announced on May 25, 2026. Besides SNBP and SNBT, UNS still provides opportunities for prospective students through the Independent Admission pathway,” he added.

The 2026 UNS Independent Admission Selection consists of three admission categories. First, the Regular Pathway, which includes the UNS Written Examination and the use of UTBK SNPMB scores. Second, the Affirmation Pathway, intended for specific groups, including students with disabilities, outstanding students, social welfare applicants, and recipients of the Indonesia Smart College Card (KIP-K). Third, the Partnership Pathway, which includes collaborations with strategic partners and the UNS Alumni Association (IKA UNS).

Through these various pathways, UNS is committed to providing an adaptive and inclusive student admission system capable of attracting talented students from all parts of Indonesia.

Registration for the 2026 UNS Independent Admission Selection is open from May 11 to June 2, 2026. The written examination will be held on June 8–11, 2026. The examination for international class programs is scheduled for June 12–13, 2026, while the announcement of results will take place on June 24, 2026. The entire selection process is prepared to provide the widest possible opportunity for the best prospective students to join and continue their studies at UNS.

UNS — The Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Smart Hub Building was officially inaugurated by the Mayor of Surakarta, Respati Achmad Ardianto, on Friday (May 8, 2026). Located west of the UNS Rectorate Building, the UNS Smart Hub is expected to become a center for innovation development, collaboration, and digital transformation within the university environment.

In his remarks, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all invited guests, particularly the Surakarta City Government and the management of Bank Jateng for their support and strong cooperation.

The development and management of the UNS Smart Hub Building, which also houses the UNS Sub-Branch Office (KCP) of Bank Jateng, were described as a tangible form of collaboration between UNS and Bank Jateng. This partnership not only provides banking services for the academic community but also supports the creation of collaborative and interactive spaces on campus.

“The presence of the UNS Smart Hub Building is expected to bring significant benefits, not only to the UNS community but also to the surrounding society,” said Prof. Hartono.

In addition to banking services, the building is equipped with indoor and outdoor spaces that can be used for discussions, interactions, and collaboration among students, lecturers, and staff. These facilities are considered important in fostering a productive, open, and innovative academic culture in a modern university setting.

UNS also encouraged its academic community to make optimal use of the facilities at the UNS Smart Hub, both for academic and non-academic activities. It is hoped that the available spaces will inspire ideas, innovations, and collaborations that benefit the wider community.

Going forward, UNS hopes that its partnership with Bank Jateng will continue to expand into various strategic areas, including financial literacy, service digitalization, student entrepreneurship development, and support for other university programs.
