UNS — Angger Wicaksana, a student from the Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Program at the Vocational School of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, won first place in the International Essay Competition (IEC) held as part of the 18th Dentistry Scientific Meeting (DSM) by the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG), Universitas Indonesia (UI). He received the award during the event’s peak session held offline on Sunday (10/11/2024) at the 5th Floor of the Sarinah Thamrin Building, Central Jakarta.

In his essay, Angger proposed an innovative biodegradable urine test strip made from nanochitin derived from shrimp shell waste for the early detection of diabetes mellitus. This innovation offers a non-invasive, affordable, and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional blood-sample-based diabetes detection methods.

“The idea came from the high prevalence of diabetes in Indonesia and the underutilized potential of shrimp shell waste. Nanochitin was chosen due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and high surface area, making it ideal for biosensor development,” Angger explained to uns.ac.id on Thursday (21/11/2024).

Angger’s preparation for the competition was extensive and self-driven. He conducted comprehensive literature research, delving into the properties and potential of nanochitin, studying the epidemiology and pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus, and analyzing existing early detection methods.

“I also thoroughly reviewed the IEC guidelines to ensure my essay met all requirements, including the evaluation criteria. Writing the essay required significant time and dedication, from drafting the outline, writing the initial draft, and revising multiple times, to final editing to ensure clarity, coherence, and accuracy of the information. One of the biggest challenges was presenting complex scientific concepts in clear and straightforward language understandable to a general audience,” Angger elaborated.

The IEC, an annual event hosted by FKG UI, serves as a competitive platform for active diploma and undergraduate students across health science disciplines in state and private universities. This year’s theme, “Interdisciplinary Approaches to Health Preservation,” encouraged participants to develop innovative and integrated solutions from various disciplines to enhance public health.

“My essay’s innovation aims to raise awareness and increase community participation in diabetes screening, especially for those with limited access to healthcare facilities,” Angger hoped.

After being declared the first-place winner, Angger emphasized that this achievement is not an endpoint but a starting point for further innovation and sustainable contributions. He believes perseverance, hard work, and an unwavering spirit are essential foundations for success.

“Winning this competition is truly an honor and a source of pride. I hope it inspires young people, especially fellow students, to explore their potential, sharpen their creativity, and transform brilliant ideas into tangible solutions. Belief in oneself and the courage to drive positive change are catalysts that will lead us to our aspirations,” Angger added.

Angger’s innovation promotes healthy lifestyles and well-being for all ages, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #3: Good Health and Well-Being.

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has achieved another milestone at the national level by securing four awards at the Abdidaya Ormawa event, organized by the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs, Directorate General of Higher Education (Ditjen Dikti), Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) of the Republic of Indonesia. The awards honor student organizations (Ormawa) that demonstrate outstanding dedication to community service activities.

UNS received the following accolades: Second Place for Most Visionary University, First Place for Most Active Student Organization (awarded to the Principium Legal Research Group from the Faculty of Law), Third Place for Best Poster in Education, Persuasion, and Entertainment (earned by the Appaloosa Animal Husbandry Student Association, HMP, from the Faculty of Animal Science), and First Place for Best Comprehensive Expo Booth (also awarded to the Principium Legal Research Group from FH).

Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Ir. Dody Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., explained that the Abdidaya Ormawa event took place at Universitas Udayana, Bali, from November 7–9, 2024. The event involved universities nationwide that passed the selection stage. UNS was represented by three teams from the Principium Legal Research Group (FH), the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Agriculture (FP), and the Appaloosa Animal Husbandry Student Association (HMP). Each university delegation comprised two team members, one Ormawa representative (Ormawa leader), and one faculty advisor.

UNS’s success in securing four awards reflects its commitment to empowering students to engage in impactful community-oriented activities. “This event not only recognizes outstanding Ormawa but also serves as a platform for students to develop their potential through community service. These achievements reinforce UNS’s position as a university that supports student growth in both academic and non-academic fields,” Prof. Dody said.

Therefore, UNS aims further to enhance the quality and sustainability of Ormawa programs while encouraging more students to participate in initiatives that benefit society and the environment.

These awards underscore UNS’s dedication to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in providing quality education and fostering broader collaborations for social and environmental sustainability.

SLINGO is integrated with a website that not only provides product information but also features a sign language dictionary. The innovation supports sustainability by using biodegradable, eco-friendly materials, specifically processed from sugarcane waste and palm shell fibers.

The solution impressed the judges by addressing social inclusion for people with disabilities while promoting environmentally friendly production methods. “We are very proud of this achievement, especially since we competed against outstanding teams from various universities. Showcasing our work on an international stage was an invaluable opportunity,” Werna, a team representative from UNS, said.

Fachrizal elaborated on the technical aspects, stating that the device employs advanced technology to translate sign language into text or voice, facilitating easier and more inclusive communication in various settings.

Maxvallecia expressed hope that their achievement would inspire other students at FT UNS. “We hope that more teams from UNS will continue to excel and bring sustainable innovations to a global level in the future,” he stated.

The SLINGO innovation by the FT UNS team is a testament to collaboration and perseverance in delivering inclusive solutions for sustainability. With this accomplishment, UNS once again proves its commitment to creating impactful innovations for society.

The innovation presented at the ATU-NET Sustainability Challenge 2024 aligns with multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3, which ensures healthy lives and promotes well-being for all.
When asked about his role as a Capital Market Ambassador, Abel shared that he is actively involved with the Investor Club at FEB UNS. Through this membership, he has conducted several socialization activities related to the capital market. Following his selection as an ambassador, Abel was also assigned by IDX to help spread awareness about the capital market to a broader society.

“My work program involves promoting the Capital Market Ambassador initiative to members of the FEB UNS Investor Club and encouraging their participation. Additionally, I assist the Indonesia Stock Exchange in conducting outreach activities on the capital market for the general public, university students, and high school students, particularly in collaboration with the IDX Central Java 2 Representative Office,” Abel explained to uns.ac.id on Wednesday (13/11/2024).

The evaluation for the DPM BEI program occurs quarterly and is divided into two categories: Direct Education and Social Media Education. The Direct Education category is assessed based on the total number of participants attending the educational sessions conducted by the ambassadors. Meanwhile, the Social Media Education category is judged based on the total views of the content posted on platforms like Instagram or TikTok.

“Evaluations are carried out every three months. For the Direct Education category, which I participated in, the assessment is based on the number of participants in the educational activities I organized with the FEB UNS Investor Club. Alhamdulillah, in the second quarter, we ranked seventh, and by the end of the year, we achieved third place,” Abel stated.

Abel also mentioned that he focused on enhancing his knowledge of the capital market and carefully planned and executed his work program. He received guidance from the IDX Central Java 2 Representative Office to help him prepare for his role as a Capital Market Ambassador.

Abel’s efforts as a Capital Market Ambassador reflect his commitment to promoting sustainable economic growth. His role aligns with the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on “Quality Education” and Goal 8 on “Decent Work and Economic Growth.”

UNS – A team of students from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta won first place in the Essay Competition organized by UPN “Veteran” Jakarta. The FEB UNS team, led by Kenan Safara Nugroho from the Digital Business undergraduate program, included members Oryza Sativa Heavenia (Digital Business) and Aulia Herawati Rahma Putri (Accounting). The team excelled against nine other finalists with their essay on the topic “Empowerment Movement of Surakarta City: Gen Z’s Initiative with Darikita.Surakarta Towards Sustainable Policies.”

The FEB UNS team outperformed strong competitors, including two teams from UPN Veteran Jakarta, two teams from Universitas Indonesia (UI), and teams from Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Universitas Brawijaya, and the State Finance Polytechnic STAN. The competition, held on October 27, 2024, with the winners announced on November 2, 2024, aimed to inspire young people, especially Gen Z, to be more aware and proactive in addressing public issues.

The competition’s theme, “Proactive Participation of Gen Z in Public Policy Formation,” encouraged students to express their ideas, critiques, and constructive suggestions through essays. This theme was particularly relevant as it challenged Gen Z students to engage with public policy issues, which are often perceived as distant from their daily lives.

“The main reason behind our chosen topic was to highlight the active role of Gen Z in shaping policies. Our team focused on the idea that before creating a policy, concrete actions are needed. Thus, we selected the theme of real actions through the Darikita.Surakarta movement, combined with existing empowerment policies in Surakarta,” Aulia explained, as reported by feb.uns.ac.id on Wednesday (13/11/2024).

The FEB UNS team felt confident about their chances of winning, as their approach was based on real, actionable ideas rather than theoretical concepts. The three members had firsthand experience and an in-depth understanding of the issues at hand, having directly engaged with the problems they were addressing.

In preparation for the competition, the team conducted thorough research on public policies, especially those relevant to Gen Z. They held small discussions to brainstorm and refine ideas for their essay. Additionally, they extensively read literature and kept up with the latest policy issues in the media to enrich their references.

“One of the most memorable moments was during our presentation in front of the judges. We felt nervous, but when we successfully conveyed our ideas clearly and received positive feedback from the judges, it was an incredible feeling. Alhamdulillah, we were able to bring pride to FEB UNS by winning first place,” Kenan Safara Nugroho shared.

Kenan and his team also encouraged fellow students not to hesitate in participating in competitions like this, as they can open up new opportunities, expand knowledge, and build connections with peers from various universities. “Take advantage of every opportunity, and don’t be afraid to give it a try,” he advised. HUMAS UNS

UNS – The Interior Design, Craft, and Furniture Exhibition (Inrare) 2024 at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta invites the public to reflect on a unique environmental issue. Titled “Thermal Harmony: Living in Harmony with The Heat,” the exhibition is organized by the Interior Design Program (DI) of the Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD) at UNS. The event features a range of student work, panel discussions, workshops, and musical performances, all centered around Solo’s rising temperatures from an interior design perspective.

According to Silmi Cahya Pradini Priliana, S.T, M.Si., the exhibition showcases various student works, including Studio Apartment Interior Design, Residential Interior Design, Commercial Interior Design, Public Facility Interior Design, Final Projects, Interior Product Design, and Furniture Chair Design.

“The Solo Heat issue is explored in each piece on display. The entire event is structured using the four human senses method, which aims to engage multiple human senses to provide visitors with a more immersive and meaningful experience,” Silmi explained to uns.ac.id.

In addition, Arya Ikhsan Risqy, Chair of Inrare 2024, noted that the exhibition addresses the issue of Solo’s heat by presenting design examples and recommended solutions for achieving thermal comfort within spaces. The event, held over 10 days from late September to early October, aims to showcase how interior design can solve the pressing issue of Solo’s heat.

“For instance, in residential spaces, thermal comfort can be achieved by implementing cross-ventilation systems and creating inner courtyards. Both solutions are exemplified in the displayed works as practical applications of these recommendations,” Arya explained.

UNS – Two students from the Food Science and Technology Study Program at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) in Surakarta, achieved a podium finish in the “KOMIK” (Collaborative Advertising Meeting Regulatory Standards) competition organized by Indonesia’s Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM). Yustitia Hasna’ Ramadhani and Zafira Rahmasari Hanafi earned second place in this prestigious event.

The UNS representative team focused on creating advertisements that were not only creative but also fully compliant with BPOM’s regulations. Speaking to uns.ac.id on Sunday (3/11/2024), Yustitia explained that their team collaborated with Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to introduce their products in a fresh and relatable way to the audience.

“Besides being visually appealing, the content we created strictly followed the rules, especially in food advertising,” Yustitia shared. “Collaborating with MSMEs was significant because it taught us how to craft promotional messages that comply with regulations while still attracting consumer interest. The preparation process was challenging yet exciting. We brainstormed many ideas, explored unique concepts, and revised several times to meet BPOM’s standards. Team discussions and MSME collaborations were integral, and sometimes we even stayed up late to get the best results,” she added.

The KOMIK competition is an annual event hosted by BPOM, and this year’s edition was special, involving numerous students from various universities. The competition spanned several stages, from initial selection to workshops, culminating in the final judging phase. From a large pool of applicants, the UNS team was among the 20 teams advancing to the workshop stage.

“The workshop was intense. Over two days, we received training on advertising regulations from BPOM and learned content creation skills from professional content creators. After that, we had to produce a collaborative advertisement with MSMEs, which was judged on creativity and regulatory compliance. Our second-place points came from these aspects, including adherence to BPOM standards and creativity in conveying the message,” Yustitia elaborated.

Reflecting on the achievement, Yustitia expressed surprise and pride. She emphasized that success was the result of the team’s hard work and encouraged others not to fear trying new things, as the experience offers valuable lessons.

“Honestly, it feels amazing to win second place. Beyond personal pride, this achievement is an appreciation of our team’s efforts. It’s like tangible proof that hard work, collaboration, and attention to detail in following regulations are essential and can be rewarding. To my peers, don’t be afraid to take on new and challenging experiences, especially if they push you beyond your comfort zone. This collaboration with MSMEs was new to us, but it turned out to be an enriching experience. So, if a similar opportunity comes your way, make the most of it,” she advised.

This success aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4, “Quality Education.” Quality education is vital to supporting sustainable development objectives.

In the FERC category, the UNS vessel Maheswari Udadi BUV clinched the First Place and the Fun Race title. Designed as a remote-controlled offshore vessel powered by a fuel engine, Maheswari successfully carried a 5-kilogram Platform Buoy along a designated route, overcoming obstacles to replicate the transportation of Platform Buoys at sea.

With these outstanding achievements, UNS, represented by the BUV Team, ranked as the second overall best-performing university in the contest. This accomplishment underscores UNS’s competitive edge, even without a dedicated shipbuilding program, placing it alongside prestigious maritime institutions such as the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Politeknik Perkapalan Negeri Surabaya (PPNS), and Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP).

“We are incredibly proud to accompany the KKI UNS team represented by BUV. Although our university lacks a shipbuilding department, we confidently brought three teams, each of which made it to the podium, securing second place overall,” Daffa Putra Islami, General Manager of BUV Team UNS, said. “This success fuels our determination and inspires our UNS delegation for the coming years to strive for even greater heights.”

The enthusiasm and accomplishments of the BUV Team UNS align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 4, “Quality Education,” and Goal 9, “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.” UNS’s commitment to quality education continues to foster innovation and achievements among young generations, particularly its students.
