The initiative was inspired by the untapped potential of plant waste and Indonesia’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. The MBKM UNS Team ID 971 collaborated with CV Indigo Biru Baru to develop an innovative solution by transforming Indigofera tinctoria L. waste into bio-briquettes, a new renewable energy source.

“Excessive use of fossil-based energy sources depletes reserves and contributes to increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, alternative energy sources that are renewable and environmentally friendly are needed,” Dr. Ir. Joko Waluyo, S.T., M.T., the academic advisor for the UNS MBKM Team ID 971, explained as quoted on the FT UNS website, Friday (27/12/2024).

The bio-briquettes produced have been tested according to the SNI 01-6235-2000 standards. The test results confirmed that the Indigofera tinctoria L.-based bio-briquettes meet the SNI standards, have high calorific value, are of high quality, and are suitable for use.

As part of the program, the MBKM UNS team conducted a public outreach event at MA Muhammadiyah Tijarotul Qur’aniyah (MTQ) in Puron Village, located on Puron-Mbecek Street, Sambiroto, Bulu District, Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java, on Saturday (7/12/2024). The activity involved students and educators from the community, introducing the benefits of renewable energy and the use of bio-briquettes.

The collaboration between UNS Chemical Engineering students and the Puron Village community, particularly CV Indigo Biru Baru and MA Muhammadiyah Tijarotul Qur’aniyah, successfully integrated environmental, educational, and economic aspects. This program encouraged students to enhance their academic abilities and contributed directly to community-based renewable energy solutions, utilizing local potential and addressing waste challenges.

This initiative is expected to serve as a strategic model that can be replicated in other regions, paving the way for sustainable energy independence in Indonesia’s future.

The program also aligns with four Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

In his remarks, the Vice Rector congratulated the students for successfully passing the selection process and being able to take part in the 8th MBKM Kampus Mengajar Program. He outlined the various benefits students can gain from their participation in the program.

“I hope that all of you who are participating in the Kampus Mengajar can make the most of this program. For students with an educational background, this is an opportunity to hone your teaching skills, while for those from non-education majors, it is a chance to develop soft skills and enhance your social awareness,” Prof. Dody said.

Prof. Dody also expressed his gratitude to the Field Supervising Lecturers (DPL), who will guide the students throughout the program. He urged the Heads of Study Programs (Kaprodi) to support the smooth implementation of the program, which will, in turn, contribute to improving the university’s Key Performance Indicators (IKU).

The MBKM Kampus Mengajar Program will commence on Monday (9/9/2024) and run for the next four months. UNS students will be placed in various schools, ranging from those located around the Solo Raya area to schools as far as Jepara Regency.

This semester marks the 8th year of the MBKM Kampus Mengajar Program. Through this initiative, it is hoped that young people will be cultivated with a greater sense of care for education in Indonesia.

Dr. rer. nat. Nurhadi, S.Ant., M.Hum., Chairperson of the 2024 MBKM Festival Committee, explained that the event aimed to showcase the products created through the MBKM program. Throughout 2024, students developed numerous innovations, which were displayed to the UNS academic community and the broader public.

This event also provided an opportunity to expand the market potential for outstanding products developed in Student Community Service (KKN) programs, fostered villages, and partner organizations. Various products from Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) were highlighted, aiming to elevate them to higher market levels.

In addition, there were exhibition booths that showcased the results of student organizations’ capacity-building programs (PPK Ormawa) and participants of the National Student Science Week (Pimnas). This event served as a rehearsal for upcoming national-level competitions.

“The participants of the 2024 MBKM Festival include groups from the KKN Program, fostered villages, partner villages, corporate partners, state-owned enterprise partners, local government partners, and MBKM Flagship,” Dr. Nurhadi stated during the opening report on Wednesday (28/8/2024).

A total of 200 booths showcased various works and products, including 352 KKN booths, 17 Wirausaha Merdeka (WMK) and Village Community Development and Empowerment Program (P2MD) booths, 10 Student Creativity Program (PKM) booths, 4 Program Ormawa Membangun Negeri (POMN) booths, 5 Partner Village booths, booths for the Certified Internship and Independent Study Program (MSIB), Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA), the Outstanding Students Association (Imapres), booths for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PPKS), faculty booths, and more.

UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., praised the vibrant atmosphere of the MBKM UNS 2024 Festival, emphasizing that it demonstrated UNS’s success in achieving flexibility and freedom in student learning. He expressed pride in UNS students’ ability to develop competencies across psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains.

“Through MBKM, we will continue to enhance students’ potential substantively, thereby narrowing the gap between graduates’ competencies and market demands,” Prof. Hartono said.

The MBKM UNS 2024 Festival featured a series of talk shows, sharing sessions, and various entertainment performances. On the first day, visitors were treated to sharing sessions on topics such as “Kolaborasi Mitra untuk Menyongsong Indonesia Emas 2024” and “Mari Mengabdi untuk Indonesia,” as well as acoustic performances by Akusara.

The second day’s talk shows covered two topics: “Ormawa Membangun Negeri: Inovasi dan Aksi (innovation and action)” and “PKM Center.” Another sharing session was held to promote various MBKM activities, including WMK and MSIB. Several outreach sessions were also conducted, including sessions by the PPKS UNS Task Force and the UNS Student Code of Ethics Assembly (MKEM). The day concluded with another exciting entertainment performance by Javakustik.

UNS Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Dody Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., officially closed the MBKM UNS 2024 Festival on Thursday, (29/8/2024). He expressed his gratitude to everyone who participated in and supported the success of the two-day event, with hopes that the valuable experiences gained by MBKM participants from various schemes would bring lasting benefits.

Khoirul Nur Adhi, a member of the MBKM team and UNS Science Education student, explained that an ecobrick is an environmentally friendly brick made from plastic waste. Plastic bottles are filled with smaller plastic waste to create a solid, reusable brick.

The activity began on May 29, 2024, with the teaching assistants delivering a presentation on using plastic waste and bottles to make ecobricks. Besides presenting the material, the teaching assistants also encouraged the students of Surakarta Sports Junior High School to actively participate by asking questions and practicing the ecobrick-making process.

“Each student was asked to bring two used plastic bottles filled with compacted plastic waste. These plastic bottles were then collected to make an ecobrick rack,” Khoirul explained.

Dyah Ayu Saraswati, the head of the Teaching Assistance Team, added that after learning about ecobrick assembly, the students started constructing racks with the collected ecobrick materials in their respective classes. Each ecobrick creation was evaluated based on neatness, aesthetics, and creativity.

“Four classes participated in this ecobrick assembly activity, with each class being assisted by 2 to 3 students in constructing the racks. The students were also asked to decorate their creations as beautifully as possible, as the finished racks would be judged on various aspects,” Dyah elaborated.

The ecobrick racks were showcased during a creation exhibition, marking the culmination of the P5 activities at Surakarta Sports Junior High School. The displayed ecobrick racks were then judged by a panel of teachers and school staff.

The Surakarta Sports Junior High School Teaching Assistance Group is an MBKM UNS grant group consisting of ten students from the Science Education Program, guided by Isma Aziz Fakhrudin, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Annisa Nur Khasanah, S.Pd., M.Pd.

“This activity aims to familiarize students with environmental conservation by recycling waste into artistic creations,” Dyah concluded.

The MBKM UNS student team, led by Aldhi Choirul Anam, featured Budi Wahyono, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ph.D., as a speaker at the seminar. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Ir. Suwarto, M.Si., they found that the quantity of MSMEs in Kaliboto Village was not matched by adequate quality. Therefore, efforts are needed to support the quality of MSMEs in Kaliboto Village through seminars.

These efforts require a holistic approach involving relevant stakeholders, including the Kaliboto Village Government, social institutions, and the Kaliboto Village community. The program aims to provide MSME actors with insights to improve the quality of their products, making them more marketable. The knowledge shared is also expected to enhance business potential awareness among MSME actors, enabling them to operate their businesses more effectively and identify promising business opportunities.

In his presentation, Budi Wahyono explained that optimizing residents’ economic resources requires support from five aspects, known as the pentahelix: government, community, academia, media, and the business actors themselves. The “Explore Business Potential from Village” seminar received a warm reception from the Kaliboto Village community, which was enthusiastic and actively participated in the question-and-answer session.

The event continued with a bazaar showcasing local MSME products from Kaliboto Village. Siti Nurohmah, a bazaar participant, expressed that the bazaar helped increase the visibility of her products and hoped that such events would be held annually. The seminar and bazaar event was enlivened by a performance from The Halcker Band. Toward the end of the event, the excitement grew with a door prize drawing.

In his remarks, Prof. Dr. Ir. Suwarto, M.Si., stated that the MBKM program aims to provide opportunities for students and the community to learn outside the campus. Students directly engage in activities that benefit the community.

“I hope that the involvement of students through this program can bring innovation, fresh ideas, and new enthusiasm to developing local MSMEs,” Prof. Suwarto said.

The Head of Kaliboto Village, Sri Sunaryo, appreciated the seminar and MSME bazaar held on Saturday (25/5/2024). Many participants gained new insights into business and marketing strategies. Additionally, the MSME bazaar provided a golden opportunity to showcase the village’s top products to a broader audience, making Kaliboto Village’s local products more recognized, desirable, and competitive.

“As a lecturer in graphic arts, this event can serve as an exploration medium for students and can widely introduce traditional printmaking techniques. It also serves as a reminder to the public that creating art is not easy; many stages need attention,” Dyah said.

Linocut is a high relief printmaking technique using linoleum sheets as the printing medium, commonly known as carving on lino. Several participants admitted they had never heard of Linocut before and were eager to learn and try something new.

The Linocut Art Class provided intensive instruction, considering most participants were unfamiliar with the technique. It began with sketching on linoleum sheets, followed by teaching the correct carving techniques and how to print the carved design onto a scarf.

In this form of art exploration, the medium used for printing was not paper but scarves. The technique applied was stamping, which involves cutting away the unnecessary parts and leaving only the areas that need to be printed.

The traditional printmaking technique can have a calming effect, as participants focus on details and repetitive activities such as carving and printing.

“Each linocut print is a unique piece of art. Even though it comes from the same print, it will produce different variations depending on the application of ink and the pressure applied during printing. Thus, every work has its own beauty,” Jihan said, highlighting the uniqueness of Linocut art. Humas UNS

The MBKM Sekelas team as the organizer consists of students from the Fine Arts study program of the Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD). They include Tito Vincentius, Seno Sayyid, Nickosa, Rahma Khairunnisa, Jihan Regita, Naira Ziven, Abiyyu Fawwaz, Arkan Brana, and Axel Val Dirda. This team was guided by UNS FSRD lecturer, Dyah Yuni Kurniawati S.Sn., M.Sn.

The phenomenon of rapid fashion growth has various impacts on the world. One noticeable impact is the abundance of fabric waste from usage leftovers or production remnants. Based on this, the MBKM Sekelas Collective team took the initiative to organize an art class patchwork by utilizing fabric scraps. Patchwork is the art or technique of creating fabric works by uniting small pieces of different fabrics into one. It is often used in making quilts or other fabric decorations.

The Art Class Patchwork activity, which took place on Saturday (18/5/2024), was led by Rahma, a Fine Arts study program student at UNS. Dyah Yuni K. M.Sn., as the supervising lecturer, explained that the students’ initiative was seen as a form of concern for fabric waste. She appreciated the steps taken by the students to organize the Art Class Patchwork.

“It is natural for the community to realize that many discarded objects around us can still be recycled and turned into art pieces with utility,” Dyah Yuni said.

During the class session, Rahma introduced patchwork, which is a sewing technique that combines various patterns and fabric pieces into structured sheets. Patchwork is often used to make quilts, bed covers, tablecloths, and various other types of home decorations.

“The hope is that this art class patchwork can serve as a small example of the solution for managing fabric waste that is widely spread in the community environment,” Rahma said.
