UNS — The Architecture Study Program of the Faculty of Engineering (FT) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, together with the UNS Japan Study Center (PSJ), conducted a series of international community service activities in collaboration with students from Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (RUAS), the Netherlands. A total of five international students from RUAS, alongside students from the Architecture Study Program’s Urban Rural Design & Conservation (URDC) Laboratory FT UNS, have continuously carried out activities in Sumber Subdistrict. The program began in the odd semester of 2025 and continued into the even semester of 2026.

This program focuses on participatory mapping and environmental advocacy, particularly addressing waste management issues along the Sumber River area. The activities are supervised by Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul Handayani, S.T., M.T., as part of the International Community Partnership Service (PKMI) 2025 scheme under the UNS Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM). The program series includes participatory mapping using the GreenMap method, focusing on waste management, environmental awareness, advocacy for organic fertilizer production through composting, and advocacy for inorganic waste sorting. The activities involve children and teenagers living around the Sumber River, Gadjah Putih River, and Kali Pepe River settlements. These three rivers flow through Sumber Subdistrict, Banjarsari District, Surakarta City.

The community service activities in Sumber Subdistrict were initiated based on preliminary surveys and a series of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). “The residential area along the Sumber River was identified as a priority area requiring intervention due to waste accumulation around the RW 07 dam area. This has caused river flow blockages, increased flood risks, and reduced the environmental quality of the settlement,” explained Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul Handayani.

The first FGD was conducted with community representatives and village officials as part of the participatory mapping process using the GreenMap method. Through questionnaires and the placement of GreenMap icons on a base map, residents actively identified environmental problems and potentials along the Sumber River and Gadjah Putih River corridors. As a follow-up, the second FGD was held with residents of RW 07, one of the affected areas. Discussions focused on evaluating waste management, improving community understanding of environmental issues, and discussing contextual and sustainable solutions.

“The FGD results showed increasing public awareness and motivation to participate in maintaining river cleanliness, although support facilities and cross-sector collaboration are still needed,” she stated to uns.ac.id on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

The next series of activities consisted of practical workshops on organic and inorganic waste management held at Taman Cerdas Sumber. The workshops involved 25 children from the River Care Community. The activities aimed to instill environmental awareness from an early age through education on organic and inorganic waste sorting, compost-making practices, and recycling used buckets into trash bins.

The community service advocacy program continued into 2026. In commemoration of Earth Day on Saturday, April 25, 2026, an advocacy session was held at the RT 03 RW 01 Community Hall focusing on waste management awareness and evaluating the organic compost-making practices conducted in December 2025. The activity involved the same participants, including 18 children who had attended the workshop sessions in the previous semester. The results showed that participants already understood waste sorting but still lacked deeper understanding of organic compost production.

Therefore, it was recommended that future activities focus more on practical waste management work. The Earth Day commemoration was symbolically chosen to reinforce the program’s commitment to environmental preservation and ecosystem sustainability, particularly in the Sumber Riverbank area.

This series of community service activities is part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program. The initiative focuses on participatory mapping and environmental advocacy, especially in addressing waste management issues along the Sumber River area. Students involved in the program included Tjin Groot, Ilias Engel, Kiki Gerritje, Joost Gerardurs, Bartolomeo Pietro Giuseppe Contarini, Aurellia Nadine Alexandra, Chiki Satria Perdana, Faiz Hanuraga Febrianta Prayudhi, Levania Puspa Dewi Hasibuan, and Yusuf Eka Farras.

Through this series of activities, the program is expected to encourage sustainable collaboration among academics, government institutions, communities, and society in addressing urban environmental problems, particularly in riverbank areas.

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, in collaboration with the Secretariat General of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI), organized the Campus Parliament 2026 program. Carrying the theme “Environmentally Conscious Generation: Critical Thinking, Regulatory Awareness, and Real Action in Waste Management,” the event was held over two days, on May 5–6, 2026, at the Auditorium G.P.H. Haryo Mataram UNS.

The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) and Member of Commission XII DPR RI, Dr. Eddy Soeparno, S.H., M.H.; Deputy Chair of Commission II DPR RI, Aria Bima; Secretary General of DPR RI, Dr. Ir. Indra Iskandar, M.Si., M.I.Kom.; Head of the Bureau of Protocol and Public Relations of DPR RI, Rudi Rochmansyah, S.H., M.H.; and the Mayor of Surakarta, Respati Achmad Ardianto, S.H., M.Kn.

The President of the UNS Student Executive Board (BEM), Muhammad Kailani Rizqi Pratama, explained that Campus Parliament 2026 is a collaborative program between the DPR RI Secretariat General and UNS. The program includes a national seminar, training sessions, and a parliamentary simulation designed to provide practical insights into the legislative process.

A total of 100 participants were selected from various universities across the Solo Raya region, including representatives from faculties and student organizations at UNS. Participants were divided into factions as part of the parliamentary simulation, taking on roles such as session leaders, ministries, and commissions to replicate real legislative processes.

Through this program, participants are expected to enhance their understanding of parliamentary systems, broaden their knowledge of public policy, and develop greater awareness of environmental issues, particularly waste management. The initiative aims to cultivate a generation that not only understands regulations but is also capable of delivering real solutions to societal challenges.

Head of the Bureau of Protocol and Public Relations of DPR RI, Rudi Rochmansyah, expressed his appreciation to UNS for its support and collaboration. He emphasized that Campus Parliament serves as a miniature of DPR RI proceedings, allowing students to engage in discussions, debates, and policy formulation.

“This program is not merely ceremonial, but an educational platform for parliamentary awareness, regulatory socialization, and a channel for students’ aspirations to become more critical and actively involved in public policy implementation,” he stated. The event also featured various public services, including DPR RI’s digital library, legislative archive exhibitions, a virtual museum, and public information services.

Meanwhile, UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., highlighted that Campus Parliament is an important platform to bridge academia and legislative institutions through democratic education, public policy literacy, and national insight strengthening.

Amid increasingly complex national challenges, ranging from environmental issues and social transformation to economic resilience and governance, students are expected to take on active roles as critical intellectual agents who understand legislative processes and contribute meaningfully to national development.

UNS reaffirmed its commitment to addressing environmental challenges, particularly waste management, through strengthening its Green Campus initiatives, collaborating with local governments, developing waste processing innovations, and promoting multidisciplinary research.

“This collaboration with DPR RI is a concrete step in strengthening a higher education ecosystem that is academically good while remaining relevant to national needs,” said Prof. Hartono.

As keynote speaker, Deputy Chair of Commission II DPR RI, Aria Bima, emphasized that Indonesia is currently facing major challenges, including a waste crisis that has reached tens of millions of tons annually, significantly impacting the environment and society.

“We already have regulations, such as Law Number 18 of 2008 on Waste Management. However, the main challenge lies not in drafting regulations, but in their implementation and supervision. This is where students play a crucial role as critical agents of change who understand regulations and can drive real action,” he explained.

Through Campus Parliament, students are encouraged to understand that public policies are not created instantly but are the result of dynamic discussions, negotiations, and competing interests. Therefore, student voices grounded in data and strong arguments are essential in overseeing public policy.

Following the keynote session, the event continued with presentations from several speakers, including Dr. Eddy Soeparno, Mayor of Surakarta Respati Achmad Ardianto, and the Head of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) UNS, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ayu Ketut Rachmi Handayani, S.H., M.M.

UNS — The JarPak Grant Team of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta carried out a learning activity under the Village Development Project. This initiative aims to empower communities through programs that have a direct impact on rural society. The impact-driven grant team consists of nine undergraduate Agribusiness students: Alma Aprilstya, Amalia Putri Chamilla, Annida Kharisma Putri, Ayu Widyaningsih, Chintya Ayu Pramesti, Damar Adhi Nugroho, Desinta Ayu Anggrahani, Yogi Putra Setyawan, and Alya Rayhan Ramadhany as the project leader.

The outreach program on maggot cultivation and aquaponics demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting food security and environmental management. The activity was held at the home of a local resident, Agus Haryanto, in Joglo Subdistrict, Banjarsari District, Surakarta, on April 12. It was attended by 20 members of KWT Ngadi Asih and was also joined by the Head of Joglo Subdistrict, Agus Riyadi, S.T., the supervising lecturer Raden Kunto Adi, S.P., M.P., and local officials.

The event featured a speaker from CV Kans.id, Muhammad Aji Pamungkas, who provided both educational insights and hands-on practice on utilizing organic waste through maggot cultivation and implementing urban farming systems based on aquaponics. The materials focused on practical solutions to household waste issues while also increasing community economic value.

In his presentation, Muhammad Aji Pamungkas explained that organic waste holds significant potential when properly managed. “Organic waste, which is often considered worthless, can actually become an economically valuable alternative feed source through maggot cultivation. Even in small quantities, maggots are capable of decomposing a substantial amount of waste,” he explained.

He also emphasized that understanding the maggot life cycle is key to successful cultivation. “Maggots go through several life stages, from eggs to adult flies. During the larval stage, they are highly active in decomposing waste. This is where their main potential lies in supporting organic waste management,” he added.

In practice, the cultivation medium uses a mixture of tofu residue and bran in a ratio of 1 kg to 500 grams. This combination is considered effective in supporting maggot growth due to its balanced protein and carbohydrate content. He further mentioned that 1 gram of maggots aged 0–5 days can decompose up to 2 kg of organic waste.

In addition to maggot cultivation, the program also introduced aquaponics as an integrated agricultural solution. This system combines fish farming and plant cultivation within a mutually supportive ecosystem.

“Aquaponics is highly suitable for household-scale farming, especially in limited spaces. Waste from fish can be utilized as nutrients for plants, creating a fully integrated system with minimal waste,” he explained.

During the discussion session, participants showed great enthusiasm by asking various questions. One participant raised concerns about the growth differences of catfish in different cultivation media. In response, the speaker explained that limited space and oxygen availability are key factors.

“Catfish raised in small containers such as gallons tend to grow more slowly compared to those in ponds. Ideally, one catfish requires about 5 liters of water. For a gallon container, it is best to stock only 3–5 fish to maintain optimal growth,” he clarified.

The Head of Joglo Subdistrict, Agus Riyadi, S.T., appreciated the activity as a concrete step toward community empowerment. “Activities like this are highly beneficial as they not only provide knowledge but also offer practical solutions for managing waste and improving household food security,” he stated.

Through this training, KWT Ngadi Asih is expected to independently implement organic waste management and develop integrated agriculture-based businesses. This program is hoped to serve as an initial step toward creating a cleaner, more productive, and sustainable environment, while also improving community welfare.

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) continues to demonstrate its global engagement through the participation of its academic staff in international forums. A Business Law lecturer from the Faculty of Law UNS, Dona Budi Kharisma, was invited as a speaker at an international seminar titled Doing Business in Indonesia, organized by RUDN University in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on April 22, 2026.

The seminar was held following the visit of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, to Moscow on April 13, 2026, aimed at strengthening strategic Indonesia–Russia partnerships amid global dynamics. The event targeted managers, export and investment professionals, and business development specialists working with, or planning to enter the Indonesian and ASEAN markets.

Alongside Russian business practitioners and economists, Dr. Dona participated as a speaker from Indonesia. Delivering his presentation virtually, he provided a comprehensive analysis of Indonesia’s economic structure, national reform agenda, demographic dividend potential, leading industrial sectors, and the characteristics of Indonesia’s business culture.

A key focus of the seminar was on practical strategies for entering the Indonesian market and navigating regulatory frameworks for foreign investors. In his presentation titled Legal Framework of Investment Climate in Indonesia (Guidance for Foreign Investors), Dr. Dona elaborated on Indonesia’s investment policy design, including the positive investment list, priority sectors, conditional open investment schemes, and protections for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The participation of UNS academics in such international forums reflects the university’s active role in advancing the concept of an impactful university, one that not only focuses on education and research but also contributes to academic diplomacy, strengthens international collaboration, and disseminates strategic knowledge to the global business community.

This engagement also aligns with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through knowledge dissemination and cross-border academic collaboration; SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by promoting inclusive and sustainable investment understanding; SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through strengthening investment and innovation ecosystems; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by expanding global partnerships among academic institutions, governments, and industry players.

Through this initiative, UNS not only strengthens its international presence but also demonstrates the tangible contribution of Indonesian higher education institutions in supporting sustainable development and enhancing national economic competitiveness on the global stage.

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has established collaboration and strategic cooperation with the Government of South Papua Province. The cooperation was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, and the Governor of South Papua Province, Dr. Apollo Sadanpo, at Meeting Room 1 of the dr. Prakosa Building, UNS, on Friday (17/4/2026).

On behalf of the UNS leadership, Prof. Hartono welcomed Governor Apollo Sadanpo and his delegation to UNS. “However, allow me to say that this is not simply ‘welcome,’ but rather ‘welcome back home’ to the UNS campus, because Dr. Apollo Sadanpo is an Alumnus of Civil Engineering at UNS, class of 1999,” said Prof. Hartono.

The signing of this MoU is a strategic step in strengthening synergy between higher education institutions and local governments, especially in the implementation of the Tridharma of Higher Education: education, research, and community service.

This agreement is expected to become a strong foundation for implementing various collaborative programs, including the development of education that is relevant to regional needs, impactful research, and community service that is solution-oriented and sustainable.

In addition, this cooperation also opens opportunities to strengthen the Impactful Campus Program and develop excellent and competitive human resources. In line with this, UNS is currently implementing its strategic plan under the DREAMTEAM framework. Through this strategy, UNS is committed to building a university that is not only academically excellent, but also able to make real contributions to national development.

In its implementation, UNS promotes the value of ACTIVE, which reflects a collaborative, innovative, and responsive spirit toward the needs of the times. This value serves as the foundation for UNS in building strong partnerships, both with the central government and regional governments, including with South Papua Province.

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta collaborated with Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Malang in organizing a Workshop, Discussion, and Research Consultation on Carbon Nitride for Wastewater Treatment, supported by LPDP 2025 funding. The activity also involved the Environmental Agency (DLH) of Sukoharjo Regency, the Environmental Agency of Ngawi Regency, and PT Entry Jaya to strengthen synergy among academics, local governments, and industry.

This workshop served as a platform to present the progress of developing a carbon nitride-based photocatalytic reactor designed to treat wastewater more effectively and in an environmentally friendly manner. The research team from UNS and UB Malang presented the reactor design development, photocatalyst material characterization, and the initial performance test results of the system in wastewater treatment.

This research program is led by Dr. Maria Ulfa, S.Si., M.Si., along with members of the UNS Research team and several UNS students. As the team leader, Dr. Maria Ulfa revealed that the reactor development has now entered an advanced stage.

“The development process has begun entering the stage of integrating Internet of Things (IoT) applications, which allow real-time monitoring of wastewater conditions through the use of various sensors. However, the participation of partners is still needed to provide an overview of regional conditions so that the reactor’s potential can be maximized,” she explained to uns.ac.id on Monday (5/1/2026).

The discussion involving DLH and industry partners focused on the potential implementation of the technology in the field, technical challenges, and adjustments to the reactor design to suit the characteristics of wastewater in regional and industrial sectors.

A representative from the Environmental Agency of Ngawi Regency, Dr. Anik Krisnawati, stated that the geographical conditions of the region present unique challenges in implementing real-time monitoring technology.

“Some of the challenges in Ngawi Regency include the long river flow and topographical conditions dominated by forest areas, which may create signal limitations for real-time data transmission,” she explained.

A similar view was shared by Dr. Sigit Samsunar, representing the Environmental Agency of Sukoharjo Regency. He mentioned that although Sukoharjo’s topography is relatively homogeneous, technical challenges still need attention.

“Sukoharjo’s regional conditions are relatively homogeneous in terms of topography, but implementing real-time monitoring systems in industrial areas still faces challenges, especially related to relatively high environmental temperatures that affect reactor performance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Farit Ardiyanto, representing PT Entry Jaya, explained the progress from the reactor manufacturing side.

“The reactor manufacturing process has now entered the prototype development stage. The addition of various sensors and increasing the wastewater treatment capacity can be carried out once supporting resources are available,” he explained.

Valuable input was also provided by Denis Eka Cahyani, S.Kom., M.Kom., from the Mathematics Study Program at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), who specializes in computation. He considered this product important in developing real-time environmental measurement tools.

The involvement of local governments and industry in this activity is an important aspect of aligning technological development with real needs in the field while also encouraging the sustainable implementation of research outcomes.

Representatives from DLH and industry partners provided input regarding the potential application of photocatalytic reactors in wastewater treatment installations, both in the industrial sector and in regional environmental management.

Through this collaboration, UNS, UM, and UB reaffirmed their commitment to producing research that is not only scientifically excellent but also has a direct impact on solving environmental problems. LPDP 2025 support is expected to accelerate the development and implementation of carbon nitride photocatalytic reactor technology for wastewater treatment in Indonesia.

In his remarks, Prof. Irwan appreciated the realization of the collaboration. “This collaboration is a shared commitment to support research and energy development. It also marks the continuation of our previous cooperation that began in 2021,” he stated.

Furthermore, Dr. Didik Gunawan Suharto, S.Sos., M.Si., the Dean of FISIP UNS, emphasized the purpose of the collaboration. He stated that the partnership aims to gather comprehensive data and insights on public perception. This collaboration includes public perception, understanding, and acceptance of Indonesia’s nuclear power plant development plan. The survey is expected to provide a valid foundation for the national atomic energy project policymaking. In addition, the survey will also support the design of effective public communication strategies to enhance public understanding and acceptance.

“This collaboration is a tangible contribution from UNS to national development grounded in scientific research. We believe that the success of nuclear power plant development depends on technological aspects and how well the public can understand and accept its benefits,” Dr. Didik added.

Moreover, Dhita, the Director of Operations and Head of Human Resources at PT ThorCon Power Indonesia mentioned the importance of social mapping in the early stages of nuclear power plant development. “Public acceptance is one of the key factors in successfully implementing nuclear power plants. Therefore, we hope this collaboration will provide deeper insights into the public’s concerns, expectations, and perspectives regarding nuclear energy,” she hoped.

UNS – The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has reaffirmed its commitment. The faculty continues to focus on community empowerment. FKIP UNS collaborates with the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (MoSA RI) to realize this commitment. The initiative aligns with the directive from the President.

FKIP UNS leaders visited the Ministry of Social Affairs office in Salemba, Jakarta, on Monday (28/4/2025). They discussed the collaboration during a meeting with the Vice Minister of Social Affairs, Agus Jabo Priyono. FKIP UNS Dean Dr. Imam Sujadi, M.Si., led the delegation. Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Alumni Prof. Slamet Subiyantoro, M.Si., also joined the meeting. Secretary General of IKA UNS Drs. Ir. Eko Nugroho BP, M.M., participated in the discussion. Deputy Chairman of IKA UNS Drs. Bambang Dwi Wahyudi accompanied the delegation as well.

Government and University Join Forces for ‘Sekolah Rakyat’

During the meeting, Vice Minister Agus Jabo emphasized the importance of partnerships between government agencies and universities. These collaborations aim to build people’s capacity, especially through the Sekolah Rakyat (People’s School) program. This movement expands access to education and skills development for underprivileged and vulnerable communities.

“Universities like UNS, especially FKIP, have significant potential to drive community empowerment through science-based approaches,” Agus Jabo stated, as quoted by kemensos.go.id. He added that higher education institutions should go beyond producing graduates—they must also act as agents of social transformation.

“We encourage students, lecturers, and alumni of UNS, especially from FKIP, to contribute to village development. They can also support community empowerment and help grow the local economy. Education must create a real impact,” he emphasized.

FKIP UNS Readies Strategic Support and Thematic Community Outreach

In response, FKIP UNS Dean Dr. Imam Sujadi expressed strong support for the Sekolah Rakyat initiative. He described it as an innovative approach to education rooted in social realities.

Dr. Imam explained that the meeting with the Vice Minister marked the beginning of FKIP’s long-term commitment. FKIP UNS will raise awareness about the importance of education and integrate Sekolah Rakyat into thematic community service programs (KKN). The faculty will also prepare socially aware teachers.

Dr. Salman Alfarisy Totalia emphasized that this collaboration would build upon an already existing partnership. It opens new opportunities for intensive cooperation in education, research, and community service. “As a multidisciplinary institution, we believe this collaboration will produce tangible benefits both for the institutions and for regional development,” he added.

Focus on Environmental Research and Regional Development

Prof. Dr. Prabang Setyono noted that both UNS and Mulawarman University share a similar approach to managing multidisciplinary study programs. He highlighted their focus on Environmental Science. “This collaboration holds immense potential, especially in the context of strategic environmental studies. It focuses on areas such as the management of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN),” he remarked.

Following the partnership agreement, both universities conducted a field visit to the Integrated Waste Management Site (TPST) 1. The site lies in the Central Government Core Area (KIPP) of IKN, Sepaku District, Penajam Paser Utara Regency. The visit aimed to observe modern waste management practices that authorities implement in the IKN area. Okky Dwi Filianto, the Site Operational Manager at TPST 1, welcomed the UNS and Mulawarman University teams. He explained that the site, with a capacity of 74 tons per day, had completed construction and was now ready for operation. “IKN is designed to be a green city, embracing modern waste management practices,” Okky said.

This collaboration aligns with several pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

Pillar 4 (Quality Education): Enhancing education and collaborative research.
