UNS — The International Conference on Social and Political Sciences (ICOSAPS), as part of the Internationalization Agenda for Higher Education (PT), was again organized under the grand theme of ‘Transformation in Times of Crisis’ ICOSAPS 2022, virtually through Zoom Cloud Meeting, on Wednesday-Thursday (3-4/8/2022). This activity presented 5 (five) speakers, namely Prof. Ann R Tickamyer, Dept. of Agricultural Economics, Sociology & Education, Pennsylvania State University, USA; Assoc. Prof. Minako Sakai, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of New South Wales Canberra, Australia; Assoc. Prof. Sabariah Mohammed Saleh, Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; Assoc. Prof. Ign. Agung Satyawan, Lecturer in FISIP UNS; and Assoc. Prof. Andy Fefta Wijaya, Faculty of Administrative Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya.

Dr. Yuyun Sunesti, Chairman of ICOSAPS, said that this international event aims to be a medium for exchanging multi-perspectives ideas and the latest research output. These perspectives from academics, researchers, and policymakers are expected to answer the latest issues surrounding various transformation topics that occurred during the world crises period, especially dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic over the past three years. Further, this activity also aims to initiate further scientific relations opportunities among academicians, researchers, and policymakers on an international scale. “The demands to adapt to new conditions post Covid-19 pandemic have forced numerous academics, researchers, and policymakers to find new adaptive and innovative solutions to facilitate adaptation process and avoiding social turmoil that paralyzes the community and national livelihood,” she said.

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta Alumni Association (IKA) held a silaturahmi and halal bi halal meet up to celebrate the Eid al-Fitr 1443 Hijri. This special event was conducted under the theme of Pandemic Reflection: The Rise of UNS, Building the Country. The silaturahmi and halal bi halal event was held at Ballroom Puri Agung Hotel Grand Sahid Jaya, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Central Jakarta, Sunday (29/5/2022). Representing the Chairman of IKA UNS, the event was opened by the Director-General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) as the Deputy Chairman of IKA UNS, Prof. Dr. Zudan Arif Fakrulloh, SH, M.H.

Prof. Zudan said that alumni, as part of IKA UNS, must maintain cordial relations. “This silaturahmi and halal bi halal among UNS alumni is a regular event organized by IKA UNS. Alhamdulillah, we can organize this year’s halal bi halal in a face-to-face event after two years of virtual Silaturahmi and halal bi halal because of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, we still have to adhere to health protocols,” said Prof. Zudan in his remarks. Further, he added that with all the potential that IKA UNS has, alumni are trying to make efforts and unify ideas to promote UNS’s honor and reputation.

Following Prof. Zudan’s speech, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, SH, M.Hum., remarked that he appreciated this silaturahmi and halal bi halal event organized by IKA UNS. “I would like to thank UNS alumni for their best contribution to UNS. Through this event, I hope we can improve the fellowship among alumni and strengthen the unity between us. Therefore, we must support this agenda as a successful annual event. Hopefully, we can continue to synergize together to establish UNS as the best Higher Education Institution in Indonesia,” said Prof. Jamal.

After the opening remarks, the event was followed by a Tausiyah (teaching) by UNS alumnus who currently serves as the President Commissioner of Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI), Ustadz Adiwarman Azwar Karim. Ustadz Adiwarman explained the importance of establishing friendly relations (Silaturahmi) and contributing to the nation and state development. “Even though our status is now alumni, we must remain solid. For example, by organizing this silaturahmi and halal bi halal meeting. I am also proud of our alumni contributions to the national affairs, such as those who assisted roads construction, building construction, mosques, and many others,” explained Ustadz Adiwarman.

The event was also enlivened with live music from Bendera 80 Band. There is also doorprizes distribution with various prizes, including smart TV, air purifier, bicycle, and many other interesting prizes. The silaturahmi and halal bi halal event was attended by UNS alumni from 11 faculties and two schools, with the earliest graduation year in 1976 to the most recent graduation year in 2021. Approximately 800 alumni are attending the event, creating a friendly and warm atmosphere. Humas UNS

UNS — A scientific article entitled “SARS-CoV-2 vaccination can elicit a CD8 T-Cell dominant hepatitis” published in the Journal of Hepatology a few days ago was widely discussed by citizens due to a perception that the journal proves the link between the Covid-19 vaccine and mysterious acute hepatitis recently found in Indonesia. Although the exact cause of mysterious acute hepatitis is not yet known, the relationship between the two matters is disputed by the Pathology Specialist Doctor in Universitas Sebelas Maret Hospital (RS UNS) Surakarta, dr. Tonang Dwi Ardyanto, Sp.PK(K), Ph.D., FISQua. He said the article did not address the mysterious acute hepatitis, which brings concern to many parents.

More precisely, says dr. Tonang, the article discusses the hepatitis conditions associated with post-vaccination autoimmune hepatitis. “The current cases of hepatitis are suspected because of the virus. In contrast, the one discussed in the article is suspected due to an autoimmune condition. So they are different,” said Dr. Tonang to uns.ac.id, Friday (13/5/2022). The autoimmune discussed in the article in the Journal of Hepatology, according to dr. Tonang occurs because of the similarity between the protein arrangement in the S section (spike) between Covid-19 and a protein arrangement in certain people.

He further elaborates that the innate proteins in certain people’s bodies may have similarities to proteins in the S section of Covid-19, which is scientifically known as Molecular Mimicry. When infected with Covid-19, the body forms antibodies, especially antibodies against the S part, commonly called S-RBD antibodies. “Because in a certain person’s body there is a protein that is similar to the S part of Covid-19, then the S-RBD antibody reacts to the protein of the person itself. This is what we called autoimmunity,” explained Dr. Tonang. When this autoimmunity occurs, then the person may develop inflammation in the body.

Further dr. Tonang states that the extent of inflammation that occurs depends on the similarity with the Covid-19 S protein, so the more similar the S protein is, the stronger the reaction occurs. “When inflammation due to the resemblance occurs in liver tissue, hepatitis occurs. As I explained before, the degree depends on how similar it is,” he added.

Sometimes there would not be a problem when someone is infected with Covid-19. However, after recovering from Covid-19 and antibodies formed, problems may arise if there is a resemblance of body proteins with the S part of the Covid-19 virus. dr. Tonang explained that the condition could be resolved with temporary medication to relieve autoantibody reactions. However, for someone who has an autoimmune disease at birth, it usually requires long-term treatment.

“As discussed in the journal article, the patient can recover well after a temporary therapy. That is why we can find ‘… possibly transient immune-mediated hepatitis post-vaccination,’ statement from the journal article’s author,” he concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — The Academic Senate of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a webinar on Prevention Strategy for Covid-19 Cluster from Face-to-Face Class Session, offline and online from UNS Inn and Zoom Cloud Meeting on Saturday (12/3/2022). The webinar is also a part of the UNS 46th Anniversary celebration this year.

In his opening remark, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, stated that the pandemic had caused great changes in the social, economic, cultural, and security sectors. The education sector was also forced to change its face-to-face learning method to an online method, including the university that quickly adjusted to the new norms. “Slowly but surely, the university could adjust itself,” the Rector stated. He also added that the current development has also brought a change in which the Four Ministerial Decree required all regions under level 1-3 in the national pandemic handling scale to hold a limited face-to-face class session, to which UNS responded promptly.

“This is proved by our campus has tried to hold offline learning process,” Prof. Jamal added.

The conditional and gradual offline learning session was implemented on 6 September 2021 by requiring all related parties to obey health protocols and limiting the capacity of classrooms. The learning process was implemented under a blended learning system considering the limitation in classroom capacity available for students to attend their classes offline. The Rector also explained that the university continuously discusses the current pandemic condition with the municipal government to ensure when offline class is safe and when the class needs to go back online.

UNS — Starting from a joke while waiting for graduation, the alumnus of the Food Technology Study Program (ITP), Faculty of Agriculture (FP), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Pingkan Pashanita succeeded in establishing a fashion business. However, what was initially just a curiosity led her to pursue this business until now.

“Initially, it was just a curiosity to fill my idle time while waiting for graduation around the end of 2016. But before that, people ask how come the clothes look good, where did I buy them or where they get tailored? Well, from that thought, I’m thinking of creating a dress product like this. After all, many were also interested in the model,” said Pingkan, Tuesday (1/3/2022).

Pingkan explains that the selection of the name Beauteeq is made of the word “beau” taken from the word beautiful and “teeq” taken from the word batik. So, Beauteeq means beautiful batik. “However, Beauteeq also produces clothing products other than batik, thus, complementing each other. Even though so, we must hold on to the main goal of Beauteeq, to bring clothes with a modern design with a traditional touch,” Pingkan said.

Pingkan adds that the uniqueness of Beauteeq is in its fresh and modern design but still leaves a traditional impression. Furthermore, Beauteeq products are also designed in a classic, timeless design; thus, they can maintain their good-looking appearance from year to year.

Pingkan admitted that during the Beauteeq establishment, she faced more joy than grief. “For my liking, I didn’t think I could actually put my creativity and work through the fashion industry. I was earning income and living in a field that I liked. Furthermore, it can also help support the people around (especially employees) through this small business,” said Pingkan.

However, Beauteeq was also hampered at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. “At that time, it was quite difficult for Beauteeq because most Beauteeq clothes were functional for a wedding reception. While at that time, this type of function was not allowed to be held. Our turnover is dropped to 10-20% from the previous year. It is barely going any further. However, I am grateful for resolving those hard times,” continued Pingkan.

Now, Beauteeq is self-produced with the help of several seamstresses. Those who are interested in buying or seeing the Beauteeq collection can directly visit the official Beauteeq Instagram account @beauteeq or the Shopee marketplace @beauteeq_atelier.

Finally, Pingkan advised, if you want to start a business, the utmost important first step is to instill your will. “Just focus and start as you like. Good luck for those who want to start a business,” Pingkan concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — Japanese Study Center (PSJ) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta in collaboration with Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia (PPI) Japan, Persada Solo, and International Association of Indonesian Scientists (I4) held a research webinar. This webinar discussed education readiness amid the Covid-19 pandemic and the case study between Japan and Indonesia with the experts.

The webinar on Saturday (19/2/2022) invited three speakers, David Virya Chen, Ph.D., a specially appointed researcher in Immunology Frontier Research Center, Osaka University; Asst. Prof. Miftakhul Huda, Assistant Professor di Nagoya University; and Murni Ramli, M.Si., Ed.D.; Faculty Member of Biology Education UNS. The opening remark was delivered by Prof. Yusli Wardianto, the Educational and Cultural Attache of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) Tokyo, and Prof. Sajidan, the Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS.

In his opening remark, Chairman of PSJ UNS, Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul Handayani hoped that the webinar could benefit all participants. “We hoped that the partnership agenda prepared with PPI Japan could be implemented in the future,” Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah stated.

Prof. Sajidan also appreciated the collaboration and hoped that students in Japan could contribute to the nation’s development, although they are far away from Indonesia. “I am happy with the spirits of PPI Japan hopefully, after you graduate, you can come back to build Indonesia to be in the same level as Japan,” Prof. Sajidan stated. Prof. Yusli Wardianto supported Prof. Sajidan and stated that although they are abroad, it is expected that they will contribute to the nation. “I hoped we could take a synthesis from the speakers,” he stated.

The first speaker, David Virya Chen, Ph.D., discussed Covid-19 and the role of the vaccine. He compared the immune system and kitchen in the sense that the immune system is like kitchen components that are only included when we open their containers. He also emphasized the importance of vaccine distribution before the booster program. The second speaker, Asst. Prof. Miftakhul Huda shared material on an education program in Japan during the pandemic situation. He stated that not all schools in Japan were ready when the government applied Covid-19 emergency. The condition led to non-intensive materials provided by teachers, with some of them only providing their students with pdf or video materials. “Only around 9% uses two-way media like Zoom,” he stated.

The last material from Murni Ramli, M.Si., Ed.D., discussed the readiness and importance of face-to-face learning amid the pandemic in Indonesia. She stated that during the pandemic, the learning activities remain under control under curriculum, actors, or facilitators in the teaching and learning process. The only difference was that the teacher’s portion was reduced, and the parents and online portion increased. “Teachers use diverse online learning platforms from group chat with parents to a complex learning management system,” she explained. She added that according to the Kemdikbudristek survey, only 46% of Indonesian teachers are ready with information technology skills, resulting in technology cluelessness. Some students also don’t have good internet access and appropriate tools to access the internet. Humas UNS

UNS — The President of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) Ir. H. Joko Widodo (Jokowi) attended the Academic Senate Open Session for the 46th Anniversary of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta at UNS Tower Ki Hadjar Dewantara Building, Friday (11/3/2022). On this occasion, President Jokowi was pleased to deliver few briefings to the UNS Rector and Academic Members related to the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, the impact of Ukrainian-Russian tensions, human resources development, and the green economy.

First, the former Mayor of Surakarta “confided” about the severity of the challenges and problems that the government had to face when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. He said that numerous heads of government from developed countries in the world were complaining about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in the world economy collapsing.

“Two days ago, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, called me and spoke a lot. Think of what I said earlier (red: economic problems due to the Covid-19 pandemic). Yesterday at noon, there was another call from Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida concerning the same thing,” said President Jokowi. He (the Japan Prime Minister) said that the world situation was not okay, especially with the tension between Ukraine-Russia and the increase in world commodity prices. This commodity price rise is impacting wheat prices. The reason is that Ukraine and Russia supply about 20 percent of the world’s wheat needs.

President Jokowi also states that the current world oil price faces a drastic surge. In 2020, the oil price was still in the range of $60 US Dollars per barrel. However, the oil price is currently going out of control and has doubled to touch the US $115 mark. “Twice as much (a/n: commodity prices go up). All countries have increased the selling price to the public. In contrast, we’re here still trying to hold on. Mrs. Minister of Finance, I need to ask how many days do you plan to hold?” said President Jokowi.

Global Challenges Get Tougher

In the UNS 46th Anniversary Academic Senate Open Session, President Jokowi said that the world is experiencing a very rapid change, and Indonesia should not become a “victim.”

This situation means that Indonesia must optimize Natural Resources and Human Resources (HR). One example is stopping the export of raw materials, such as nickel.

President Jokowi said the decision was taken to bring more significant profit to the country. He said after nickel exports were spoofed, the country could earn $20 billion US Dollars or around Rp 280 trillion. “Since VOC, we have been exporting raw materials, and until today, we are still exporting raw materials. We do not get any added value, but since 2020 I have told the ministries in Indonesia, one by one, that we must stop (red: export raw materials),” President Jokowi stated.

In the future, President Jokowi will stop the export of other raw materials, starting from bauxite in the coming year. President Jokowi admitted that Indonesia is ready to get sued by global governments due to the cessation of nickel and bauxite exports. “Bauxite export will be stopped next year! I believe that copper or tin will be sued again, but it is okay. It does not necessarily mean that we lose, but also not necessarily we win. But, that courage must be done,” he said.

Starting from the government’s courage to stop raw materials export, President Jokowi also asked universities, including UNS, to be better prepared for changing times and the world. One of the things he asked for was the preparation of superior HR according to the industry needs. President Jokowi said that the preparation time for achieving superior human resources is not necessarily long. He asked UNS and other universities to prepare this matter in two years only before Indonesia faced a demographic bonus in 2030.

Reflecting on the policies taken by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek), President Jokowi admitted that he was happy when he saw that students had been able to learn new knowledge outside his study program. He hopes that the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) can allow Indonesia to catch up with other countries, including preparing digital talents. “Digital talent is important, AI, cloud computing, digital design, digital marketing, blockchain, everything. We must have that HR talent,” he said.

Therefore, the former Governor of DKI Jakarta left UNS a message to dare act for the 46th Anniversary (HUT). Particularly dare to remove the already irrelevant study programs and replace them with a new one.

With 40,000 students, President Jokowi referred to UNS as a talent carrier that must be careful. The reason is that change can be made slowly and requires great courage to do so. “This is our challenge in preparing Indonesian human resources. Congratulations on the UNS 46th Anniversary” concluded President Jokowi. Humas UNS

UNS — Boeing’s international aircraft company took part in a guest lecture hosted by Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta on Tuesday (8/3/2022). The aircraft company giant revealed its predictions about international and Indonesian aviation trends through the Zoom Cloud Meetings platform.

In this event, Boeing was represented by Gregg Gildemann, Regional Director Market Analysis, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. In addition, there was Veronika W.R. Andrews, UNS alumnus, who currently serves as Project Manager at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The Vice-Rector for Planning, Partnership, Business, and Information Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. rer.nat Sajidan also attended the event hosted by UNS Fintech Center.

“Thank you for Mrs. Veronika’s help in making this event possible. We are very fortunate to have this event. We hope Boeing can explain to the participants the current condition of the aviation industry and career opportunities in the aviation world considering that currently, Boeing has just opened an office in Jakarta,” said Prof. Sajidan.

This event is one of the agenda for the UNS 46th Anniversary held on March 11. This guest lecture is specifically carried out to give a clear understanding to the UNS students in the aviation sector.

The Aviation Sector is Recovering Gradually

Gregg Gildemann, the speaker for the Guest Lecture, delivers material following the theme “Commercial Passenger/Air Cargo Market Update and Long Term Forecast” for one hour long. Gregg said that the pandemic is profoundly affecting the aviation world. During the spread of Covid-19 in early 2020, the world aviation trend plummeted. However, the aviation trend is slowly starting to show a recovery during 2021. At the beginning of the pandemic, the decline in flight trends is due to many flight bans. Moreover, the large number of countries that closed flight access also caused the aviation industry to experience a downturn.

In 2021 the industry experienced a rise due to the significant influence of the vaccination rate. Gregg said that according to Boeing’s predictions, domestic flights would recover, as before the pandemic, in 2022. “Flight trends are falling due to the pandemic. However, starting in 2021, the world of aviation is slowly improving. We predict that in 2023-2024 the aviation traffic can return to that in 2019. Flight recovery will start from domestic flights in 2022, followed by regional flights in 2023, and globally or internationally in 2024,” he said.

Economic growth in Indonesia is also considered to be improving. Indonesia’s economy fell in the fourth quarter of 2020 but improved in 2021. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the Indonesian economy is predicted to accelerate from the pre-pandemic condition.

Cargo Trends Rising During Pandemic

In contrast with the passenger aircraft, the trend of cargo aircraft rose during the pandemic. This situation results from rising trends in online stores (e-commerce) and logistics during the pandemic.

The community activities restrictions policy leads people to carry out their activities virtually. One of the online activities is shopping. This delivery for groceries or packages needs a lot of cargo planes to expedite the delivery time. Therefore, cargo planes trends are increased during the pandemic.

“The cargo aircraft market has experienced a major impact and change since March 2020, due to various things including the acceleration of e-commerce, the high demand for medical supplies, and maritime countries challenges, which leads to the selection of cargo planes to deliver goods,” he concluded. Humas UNS

By: Atiek Rachmawati, S.S (Alumnus of Javanese Language and Literature FSSR UNS (Now FIB) 1999/Javanese Teacher Jawa SMA N 2 Grabag, Magelang)

The Indonesia Dictionary (KBBI) defined a curriculum as a set of courses taught in an educational institution and/or a set of courses on a particular expertise. According to wikipedia.org, a curriculum is a set of courses and educational programs provided by an educational institution that contains a lesson plan that will be provided for students in a particular educational period. The curriculum preparation is adjusted to the condition and capacity of each educational level in administering the education and job requirements.

Prototype or archetype is an entity’s first look or standard (tangible unit). In design, a prototype is prepared before the actual product is produced on its accurate scale or mass-produced.

At the end of the odd semester or the beginning of even semester 2022, educational staff, particularly teachers, were roused with the implementation of a new curriculum, Prototype Curriculum. According to Dr. Supangat in his book, Kurikulum 2022, Mengenal Kurikulum Prototipe Bagi Sekolah dan Guru (2021) (Curriculum 2022, Understanding Prototype Curriculum for School and Teacher (2021)), the curriculum has been prepared in the last few years to be implemented in Exemplary Schools. It is regulated in Mendikbudristek Decree Number 162/M/2021 concerning Exemplary Schools.

Curriculum 2013 (K-2013/ Kurtilas) is currently implemented in the Indonesian education system. However, the pandemic forced the government to apply flexible policy for schools to select curricula that match students’ learning needs. The academic unit could independently apply the national K13 curriculum, emergency curriculum, and/or simplify the curriculum. The academic unit is also allowed to reduce Basic Competencies for each course so that teachers and students could be more focused on essential competencies for the next education level.

Prototype Curriculum is the follow-up of learning policy as a response to the Covid situation. The curriculum is a competence-based curriculum to support learning recovery by preparing project-based learning in supporting character development according to Pelajar Pancasila Profile. The curriculum is planned to be implemented in Preschool, Elementary School, Junior High School, Senior High School, or Vocational High School.

Its implementation in preschool will focus on students’ playing activities as the main learning activity. Shifting from Curriculum 13 that builds students’ characters through books based on themes. In the elementary school level, the natural and social sciences are combined into one course (IPAS – Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial), which was separated in Curriculum 2013. English becomes an optional course for students with a project-based learning approach. The new curriculum requires an informatics course at the junior high school level, which was set as an optional course in curriculum 2013. The course is set to be a compulsory course to adjust to digital technology development. Concentration into natural science, social science, and literature tracks is abolished in senior high school, and first-year students will learn under the same method as junior high school students. However, in their second and third year, they could select a combination of courses that match their needs, ability, and aspiration.

The Prototype Curriculum is a new paradigm in Indonesia that aligns with the Merdeka Belajar program. This curriculum applies student-centered learning that will be applied gradually starting from the Exemplary Schools selected by the government. The curriculum remains an option that the academic unit could select to implement. However, this curriculum will likely be applied to all academic units in Indonesia. Therefore, it is wise that each unit starts to prepare to implement this curriculum.

Each education unit needs to prepare several stages to support the implementation of the new curriculum: (1) Registration and data collection because the new curriculum is an option that aligns with the Exemplary School program, (2) How school prepares Operational Curriculum for Educational Unit (KOSP) based on Pelajar Pancasila Profile. School’s curriculum framework must develop the eight National Education Standards (NSP) to improve students’ performance using project-based learning that is adjusted to the academic unit’s vision and missions. (3) Teacher readiness in a more innovative learning process to develop student characters based on Pelajar Pancasila Profile and project-based learning. Pelajar Pancasila Profile refers to students with six characteristics: belief and piousness, global unity, independence, work together, critical thinking, and creativity.

Therefore, it can be concluded that the positive impact of the Prototype Curriculum is the implementation of project-based learning that focuses on essential materials. The learning process is improved through the improvements in students’ characters. Students’ potential is explored better through various exciting learning opportunities that prevent learning loss due to the pandemic. Lastly, teachers in Indonesia could welcome the Prototype Curriculum as a new education paradigm in Indonesia under the Merdeka Belajar Program. (***)
