UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta continues to produce outstanding graduates who excel both nationally and internationally. With the spirit of Mangesthi Luhur Ambangun Nagara, UNS alumni contribute to society in various fields. They demonstrate their commitment to excellence through their dedication and achievements.

One of the most distinguished alumni is Respati Ardi. As the Mayor of Solo City, he has brought innovation and change to the city. His journey—from a dedicated student to a visionary leader—serves as an inspiration to young generations.

Academic Journey and Early Aspirations

Speaking to uns.ac.id, Respati recalled his academic journey. After graduating from SMA Negeri 1 Surakarta, he was admitted to the Faculty of Law (FH) at UNS. He entered through the academic achievement pathway (PMDK).

“I began my journey to UNS in senior high school through the PMDK program, which evaluated my academic performance from grades 10 to 12. Alhamdulillah, I earned admission to FH UNS,” he shared.

Passion for Organizations

During his university years, Respati actively participated in student organizations. He joined the Islamic Students Association (HMI) and served as a committee member for the Freshmen Orientation Program (OSMARU). He also chaired the graduation ceremony committee. His enthusiasm for networking led him to engage with various cross-faculty communities, expanding his connections and friendships. Additionally, he took part in the Indonesian Youth National Committee (KNPI).

“For me, organization has been a passion since high school when I joined the Student Representative Council (MPK). The essence of organizing lies in teamwork, delegation, and collaboration to achieve common goals. Even without financial rewards, organizations function with a clear vision and mutual support. These experiences prepare students for real-world challenges,” Respati explained.

Interest in Entrepreneurship

Respati’s involvement in various communities sparked his interest in entrepreneurship. This passion deepened when he joined the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI) during his final semester. As an executive secretary, he had the opportunity to learn directly from senior entrepreneurs and industry leaders.

“This experience was more valuable than classroom lessons. I observed how successful entrepreneurs build networks and develop communication skills,” he said.

Even as a student, Respati ventured into business. He sold various products, from baju koko (Islamic wear) to sacrificial goats for Eid al-Adha and used cars. These experiences strengthened his belief in entrepreneurship.

“In both academics and organizations, we often integrate business processes into our programs. A well-planned business model ensures sustainability and benefits the broader community,” he advised students.

Emphasizing Sustainability in Leadership

Respati encourages young people to stay enthusiastic about learning and contributing to society. He believes that the younger generation plays a crucial role in shaping Indonesia’s future.

“Never lose your enthusiasm because Indonesia’s future is in your hands. Always consider sustainability in your initiatives so they can have a lasting impact on society,” he emphasized.

As a proud UNS alumnus, Respati also acknowledged the university’s progress as one of Indonesia’s most sought-after institutions. He urged students to help maintain Solo’s reputation as a safe and welcoming city.

“For UNS students, whether from Solo or other regions, let’s work together to keep Solo a comfortable and peaceful place. If you’re new to this city, embrace its welcoming nature and contribute positively,” he concluded.

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has inaugurated Prof. Burhanudin Harahap, S.H., M.H., M.Si., Ph.D. as a Professor of Islamic Law. His appointment makes him the 14th professor at the Faculty of Law (FH) and the 341st professor at UNS.

The inauguration ceremony took place at G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium. The inaugural speech titled “Enhancing the Role of Islamic Law as Living Law in the Development of a People-Based Economy.” He emphasized that Islamic law plays a crucial role in fostering an economy based on public welfare. This is especially important in contrast to the dominance of liberal and capitalist economic systems.

Academic and Professional Journey

Originally from Boyolali, Prof. Burhanudin earned his undergraduate degree in Law from FH UNS. He later pursued a Master’s degree in Islamic Law at Universitas Indonesia (UI). Additionally, he earned another Master’s degree in Islamic Finance at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga. He obtained his Ph.D. in Law from Universiti Utara Malaysia.

In addition to his academic achievements, Prof. Burhanudin has held several key managerial positions, including:

Head of the Master’s Program in Notarial Law (2013–2019)

Head of the UNS Central Library (2019–2024)

Deputy Chairman II of the Indonesian Association of Islamic Law Lecturers (ADHII) (2015–2020)

Head of Research at the Indonesian Association of Islamic Economics Lecturers (APPHEISI) (2014–2019)

His contributions have significantly shaped the development of Islamic legal studies and Islamic finance in Indonesia.

Islamic Law as a Living Law in a People-Based Economy

Prof. Burhanudin explained that Islamic law is a “living law”, meaning it is deeply embedded in societal practices. Eugen Ehrlich introduced this concept. Eugen Ehrlich suggests that Islamic law operates independently of state regulations and has guided societies long before modern states emerged.

Even in non-Muslim-majority countries, Islamic law holds legal recognition. Countries such as the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Singapore, Thailand, and Philippines incorporate it into their legal systems.

“In a people-based economy, Islamic law offers solutions to the injustices of liberal and capitalist economic systems. These systems have significantly widened social inequalities. Islamic law plays a key role in both public (social) economics and business,” Prof. Burhanudin stated.

The Role of Islamic Law in Public Economics

Islamic law contributes significantly to public economics through waqf (endowment), zakat (almsgiving), infak (charitable donations), and sedekah (voluntary giving). These mechanisms effectively redistribute wealth and help reduce economic disparities.

Several prominent organizations, including Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, have used waqf land to establish:

Schools

Hospitals

Shopping centers

Office buildings

The revenue generated from these assets supports underprivileged communities. Additionally, cash waqf and ZIS funds (zakat, infak, and sedekah) provide free education and scholarships for those in need.

The Role of Islamic Law in Business and Finance

Islamic law has led to the establishment of Sharia-compliant financial institutions, including:

Baitul Maal wa Tamwil (BMT)

Islamic banks

Islamic bonds (sukuk)

Islamic stock markets

Islamic mutual funds

Islamic insurance

Islamic pawnshops

These institutions serve as alternative financial solutions for communities lacking access to conventional banking systems.

As of 2019, Indonesia had approximately 4.500 BMTs, catering primarily to lower- and middle-income communities.

Islamic Law as the Foundation for a Sustainable Economy

Islamic law is highly adaptable, allowing it to evolve alongside societal changes. The flexibility of Islamic business law fosters economic innovation while maintaining principles of justice and social welfare.

Prof. Burhanudin emphasized the need to integrate Islamic legal principles into business practices. He encouraged wider applications of Islamic law in economic transactions, ensuring its relevance in a people-based economy.

With his appointment as Professor of Islamic Law, scholars and policymakers expect Prof. Burhanudin to continue contributing to academia and policy-making. His expertise is essential for implementing socially just economic policies in Indonesia.

Pioneering a New Milestone in International Law at UNS

Prof. Emmy specializes in International Trade Law and is the first professor in the International Law Department at FH UNS. During the inauguration ceremony, she delivered a speech titled “Artificial Intelligence and International Trade: A New Landscape Requiring Further Regulation.”

Her speech highlighted the challenges faced by the World Trade Organization (WTO) due to technological advancements. She specifically addressed the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on global trade.

Key Challenges in International Trade Law

Prof. Emmy identified two main challenges within the international trade law regime:

Trade in Services: AI-driven services, such as robot lawyers and online legal consultation platforms, are outpacing existing WTO regulations. Other examples include smart contracts, e-books, MP3 services, and streaming platforms like Netflix.

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR): Many creative works, including music, films, and AI-generated articles, are now produced by AI-powered tools. This raises legal questions about patent inventorship and copyright ownership. The absence of uniform international regulations has led individual countries to create national laws, further complicating cross-border trade.

The Need for AI Regulation in Global Trade

Prof. Emmy emphasized the importance of reframing WTO governance to accommodate AI-driven trade innovations.

“Greater institutional flexibility within the WTO is essential to facilitate rigorous and dynamic cross-sectoral dialogue and cooperation. Future WTO regulations must be highly adaptable and optimally designed. The international trade system should also respect local values and cultural contexts when addressing AI-related issues,” she stated.

She also highlighted the disparity in technological adaptation among countries. Nations with superior AI capabilities and high-quality data are poised to dominate the global trade landscape. This advantage could potentially widen the economic gap. Political shifts and evolving interest groups in the AI era must also be considered in shaping future global trade regulations.

With these concerns in mind, Prof. Emmy’s expertise and research offer valuable insights for policymakers and legal scholars. Her work also helps international trade organizations create more inclusive and adaptable global trade frameworks.

He emphasized the importance of carrying out responsibilities with creativity, innovation, and a sense of accountability. Students were encouraged to build good relationships with local communities, respect their traditions and cultures, and become agents of positive change in their respective areas.

“They will be deployed across seven provinces, from central to eastern Indonesia, carrying programs designed to address the specific needs of the communities,” he added.

KKN is one of the ways that UNS contributes to community service. The program activities can encompass various aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), depending on the types of initiatives carried out.
UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta officially inaugurated Prof. Dr. Hari Purwadi, S.H., M.Hum., as its newest professor. He becomes the 13th professor in the Faculty of Law (FH) and the 313th professor in UNS history. Prof. Hari specializes in Legal Studies and Judicial System Development, and his inaugural lecture was titled “The Competition of Legal Traditions in the Development of a Trans-Systemic Judicial System.”

In his academic speech, Prof. Hari explained the foundational role of legal systems as frameworks for formulating and implementing legal development policies. He highlighted the importance of effective legal institutions as key drivers of market economies, emphasizing their impact on legal development and societal advancement.

His lecture reviewed the judicial system, focusing on three core aspects: the values the system serves, methods for determining legal procedures, and pathways for legal development. Prof. Hari underscored the need for a legal system revolution in Indonesia, which has adopted a Mixed Legal System since colonial times.

“Mixed Legal Systems lead to the competition of legal traditions, resulting in the emergence of new definitions, theories, and perspectives. Examples of countries employing Mixed Legal Systems include Scotland, Texas, Japan, and Malaysia,” Prof. Hari explained.

Prof. Hari also discussed legal transplantation, which drives cross-system legal exchanges and the formation of mixed legal systems. He cited China’s technological innovation in creating Smart Courts utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an example. According to Prof. Hari, Indonesia’s judicial system includes secular, religious, and customary courts rooted in local wisdom. However, this diversity diminished post-independence, with Indonesia’s current legal system being predominantly influenced by Western European law.

“By adopting a Trans-Systemic approach, which harmonizes Common Law and Civil Law, the framework ultimately aims to develop theories that foster a pluralistic legal system,” he stated.

UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., praised the dedication, commitment, and perseverance of Prof. Hari in achieving the highest academic rank for a lecturer. He emphasized the significant responsibilities that come with the title of Professor, particularly in contributing to scientific advancements, education, and national development.

“Formally, a professor is expected to produce impactful works within the scope of the university’s three core mandates. In the coming years, we encourage even greater contributions to advancing UNS and enhancing its national and international reputation,” Prof. Hartono said. Humas UNS

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has achieved another milestone at the national level by securing four awards at the Abdidaya Ormawa event, organized by the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs, Directorate General of Higher Education (Ditjen Dikti), Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) of the Republic of Indonesia. The awards honor student organizations (Ormawa) that demonstrate outstanding dedication to community service activities.

UNS received the following accolades: Second Place for Most Visionary University, First Place for Most Active Student Organization (awarded to the Principium Legal Research Group from the Faculty of Law), Third Place for Best Poster in Education, Persuasion, and Entertainment (earned by the Appaloosa Animal Husbandry Student Association, HMP, from the Faculty of Animal Science), and First Place for Best Comprehensive Expo Booth (also awarded to the Principium Legal Research Group from FH).

Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Ir. Dody Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., explained that the Abdidaya Ormawa event took place at Universitas Udayana, Bali, from November 7–9, 2024. The event involved universities nationwide that passed the selection stage. UNS was represented by three teams from the Principium Legal Research Group (FH), the Student Executive Board (BEM) of the Faculty of Agriculture (FP), and the Appaloosa Animal Husbandry Student Association (HMP). Each university delegation comprised two team members, one Ormawa representative (Ormawa leader), and one faculty advisor.

UNS’s success in securing four awards reflects its commitment to empowering students to engage in impactful community-oriented activities. “This event not only recognizes outstanding Ormawa but also serves as a platform for students to develop their potential through community service. These achievements reinforce UNS’s position as a university that supports student growth in both academic and non-academic fields,” Prof. Dody said.

Therefore, UNS aims further to enhance the quality and sustainability of Ormawa programs while encouraging more students to participate in initiatives that benefit society and the environment.

These awards underscore UNS’s dedication to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in providing quality education and fostering broader collaborations for social and environmental sustainability.

UNS – Three students from the Faculty of Law (FH) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, forming Team Payakumbuh, achieved the overall champion title in the 7th Andalas Law Competition, Prof. Dr. Saldi Isra Cup. The team won first place, as well as awards for Best Paper and Best Presentation in the National Scientific Writing Competition.

Team Payakumbuh, representing UNS, consisted of Nabila Salma Aristawidya, Rio Dwi Prasetiya, and Kinanthi Ing Gusti, all of whom are undergraduate students in the Law Program at UNS.

The Andalas Law Competition is an annual national law competition organized by the Faculty of Law at Universitas Andalas. This year marked its seventh organization. After advancing through the qualifying rounds, UNS’s representative team emerged as one of the top five finalists and presented in person at Universitas Andalas from Friday (4/10/2024) to Sunday (6/10/2024).

“The process involved registration, document submission, and a preliminary screening step. Following that, the top five teams were announced, and the final round was held offline at Universitas Andalas in Padang,” Nabila explained to uns.ac.id on Friday (25/10/2024).

In their submission, the team developed a legal research paper on implementing blockchain technology to achieve carbon neutrality. Blockchain offers a new, secure, transparent, and efficient way of recording and verifying transactions. Applied to carbon trading, it could help accelerate the transition to a low-carbon, green economy.

“For this competition, our team created a legal research paper focusing on applying blockchain in carbon trading to promote carbon neutrality,” Nabila said.

Nabila expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to bring recognition to UNS in the field of law. She noted that this accomplishment demonstrates UNS’s competitiveness, with Team Payakumbuh successfully outperforming teams from other prestigious universities, such as Universitas Indonesia (UI), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), and more.

“My team and I are incredibly proud and grateful to have won the overall champion title. It was unexpected, as we faced strong teams from other universities. We were able to outshine other top institutions like UI, UGM, Undip, and many more,” Nabila added.
