Contributions to Research and Material Technology

Prof. Risa’s research focuses on surface modification in nanoscience and nanotechnology. One of his key studies explores metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). His findings indicate that a 30 nm-thick layer of Palladium Silicide (Pd₂Si) can reduce parasitic resistance. This improvement enhances computer processor performance.

He has also investigated silicon carbide (SiC) substrates, which are highly suitable for growing gallium nitride (GaN). GaN is a primary material in blue light-emitting diode (LED) technology. Since SiC substrates are expensive, he developed a cost-effective method using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). With this approach, he successfully created a 7,920-layer SiC film at 825°C.

In optoelectronics, Prof. Risa has advanced porous silicon (PSi) technology through electrochemical anodization and reactive ion etching (RIE). His research demonstrated that PSi with uniform pores enhances photoresponse stability in optoelectronic devices. Further studies explored its potential as a substrate for ZnO nanofibers and nanorods. These materials can be applied in solar cell technology.

In sensor technology, he developed a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) modified with a polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) layer. His findings indicate that PVAc nanofibers exhibit higher sensitivity than thin films. This is especially evident in detecting ecstasy precursors, with a detection limit as low as 0.7 ppm.

A Role Model in Research and Innovation

With his extensive contributions to Electronic Material Physics, Prof. Risa inspires students and young researchers. His work continues to drive advancements in research and innovation in Indonesia. UNS takes great pride in having him as a dedicated academic contributing to the global development of science and technology.

UNS — Proud achievement was accomplished by Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta students from a group of Soil Science Program students, Faculty of Agriculture (FP) UNS. The team won 1st place in the National Vlog Competition World Soil Day 2021. The team consisted of three members Farhan Erdaswin and Hanindyo Brasmtomo from the Class of 2019 and Roos Ananta D. K. from the Class of 2021.

The competition was held by the Soil Research Institute (Balittanah) and the Center for Literacy and Agricultural Land and Resources Development (BBSDLP) Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) to celebrate World Soil Day. The Vlog Competition took a theme of “Climate Change to Soil Quality.”

To uns.ac.id, Farhan Erdaswin explained that the vlog was inspired by the climate change issues that affect soil quality in Tawangmangu, Karanganyar District. Climate change that increases the average earth temperature leads to increased precipitation, sea surface temperature, and climate-related incidents, and extreme weather. The team observed declining quality of the soil marked by the degraded soil in the region.

The increased precipitation in the region also leads to landslides and the increase in land-use changes from perennial to annual plants. “What we observed then recorded in the vlog as an information media on the impact of climate change on soil quality, especially in Tawangmangu,” Farhan Erdaswin stated on Wednesday (29/12/2021).

In the vlog, the team explained soil quality criteria, including its capacity in maintaining plant productivity, maintaining water availability, and supporting human activities. Good soil quality will support its function as the media for plant growth and manage and distribute water currents while supporting the environmental function.

Soil degradation due to climate change is triggered by numerous factors such as declining soil physical condition and soil biological process due to erosion, compression, fracture, nutrient washing, acidification, salinity, and decreasing organic matters and biodiversity of soil biomes. The vlog also shared the sites of landslides in Tawangmangu.

The team stated that they were delighted with the result and to bring pride to their program at the national level. They also hoped that their vlog could improve people’s awareness to take care of the soil quality.

“The message we want to share in the video is that Tawamangu soil quality has degraded due to the climate change, so that we need to protect the soil from further degradation,” Farhan Erdaswin stated. Humas UNS

UNS — Science for Early Childhood Team Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a community service program in the form of a Webinar on Science Education for Early Childhood on Monday (22/11/2021). The community service team consisted of Kistantia Elok Mumpuni, S.Pd., M.Pd., Vera Sholeha, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Endri Sintiana Murni, S.Pd., M.Pd.

The team members consisted of faculty members and students of the Biology Education Program, Early Childhood Education Program (PG PAUD), and Fine Art Education Program. The involvement of diverse education backgrounds aims to provide an appropriate education for parents in teaching science to their children.

The webinar was implemented in four series; science education for early childhood, skills in science process and preparing simple science activities at home, arts and science, and sharing of science activities at-home experiences. This program was initiated due to the inappropriate perception of science for early childhood and aims to educate parents on how to deliver the concept of science and assist children in studying at home.

“Because the perception of science is a complicated knowledge and is not appropriate for early childhood,” Vera Sholeha, the first speaker in the webinar, explained the misperception of science for early childhood.

To counter the misperception, she provided examples of science that are close to children’s daily life, such as children playing with sands and filtering the grains of sand as an application of physics, seeing a rainbow, the sound of frog, making tea, and ball pitching play. “The concept of science could be understood by children when explained using simple language,” she added.

Kristiana Elok Mumpuni, S.Pd., M.Pd., shared material on preparing simple science activities at home. She stated that science comprehension could be achieved through observation and practice on science. Parents need to consider their children’s age, the theme of science program, learning method, tools and equipment, and parents’ ability.

“Science does not have to be learned in the laboratory with advanced tools, but could be learned at home with surrounding tools and materials,” she added.

The third speaker, Endri Sintiana Murni, S.Pd., M.Pd., shared the relationship between arts and science and how to use arts to introduce science to children. She explained that children could express themselves freely, connecting what is in their thoughts into artworks, and even science reports can be provided in the form of artworks and examples.

“For example, the sound created from taps on glass that could form musical arrangement. This is a combination of physics and arts,” she said.

The last series was concluded with sharing of experiences on science activities at home with children. Humas UNS

UNS — The Doctoral Program in Communication Science Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta succeded in graduating the first doctor, Emi Widiyanti. Emi, the Faculty Member of Agricultural Extension & Communication Program Faculty of Agriculture (FP) UNS was succeeded in defending her dissertation on ‘Negotiating the Communication Identity of Millennial Farmers and Progressive Farmers in the Era of Agriculture 4.0.’

The defense was held on Monday (22/11/2021), with Prof. Ravik Karsidi as promotor, Prof. Mahendra Wijaya as Co Promotor 1, and Prahastiwi Utari, Ph.D. as Co Promotor 2. The board of examiners was led by Prof. Ahmad Yunus, Prof. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni as secretary, and Prof. Suwarto, Prof. Pawito, Dr. Andre Rahmanto, as members.

In her dissertation, Emi suggested to the agricultural extension officers to provide communication technology literacy to ensure that farmers have the millennials’ and progressive farmers’ communication identity. Communication technology literacy has an impact on the social changes recorded in human history.

“Social structure becomes a process that shapes stereotypes negotiated in determining competences through the competence formation,” Emi explained.

As reported in https://s3ilkom.fisip.uns.ac.id, Emi stated that negotiation of millennials and progressive farmers identity contains a perspective on technology, social, cultural, and environmental transfer. Emi also found that competence, courage to motivate other farmers, culture, and environmental supports in millennial farmers make them good agricultural extension officers for other farmers. The existing identity negotiation and communication caused by the current condition faced by farmers, in which their profession was threatened by newly developed professions in the urban regions.

Emi added that farmers need competence improvement in communication skills to explain that their profession is a professional occupation in the community structure. To support the communication skills of farmers, the role of agricultural extension officers is needed to deliver materials on communication and agricultural management. At the end of her defense, Emi added that mother and wife are the main driving force for millennials and progressive farmers in their negotiation of communication identity. Humas UNS

UNS — The General Lecture held by Master Program in Biology Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta discussed the integration of science and art in the learning method. The online lecture was held through the Zoom Cloud Meeting platform on Friday (29/10/2021), inviting Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haniza Hanim binti Mohd Zain from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris Malaysia.

The general lecture was led by Meika Apriyani and Dr. Baskoro Adi Prayitno as moderators and was opened with an opening remark from Prof. Dr. Slamet Subiyantoro, M.Si., Vice-Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs, followed by an opening remark from Dr. Bowo Sugiharto, M.Pd., as the Head of Master Program in Biology Education UNS.

In the general lecture, Prof. Haniza shared her experiences in teaching science using various methods that were rarely applied by other science lecturers. One of the methods applied by Prof. Haniza is a play assignment for her students that is integrated into anatomy and histology materials in the Biology course. Song and Lyrics is another method employed by Prof. Haniza, in which students were asked to create a song based on Biology course materials.

Collaboration between science and arts is proven to create exciting learning methods. The contradictory characteristics between arts and science create harmony in attracting students’ interest to participate in science-related courses and facilitate students’ comprehension. The combination was inspired by Prof. Haniza’s experience as a science student in which arts helped her to comprehend science materials that she thought were difficult. Such integration is also a solution for students’ boredom in learning, especially amid the Covid-19 pandemic that limits people’s mobility.

“With exciting learning situations, students will be happier to participate in the learning process,” Prof. Haniza stated.

Arts assignments are also still possible to complete for students even though they need to be extra creative in conducting distanced collaboration among them. Continuous assessment, through essay, mind mapping, bridge maps, self-learning module, virtual lab, and virtual field work could also be incorporated to reduce students who cheat in examination. Prof. Haniza also gives her students assignments with strict deadlines in the Myguru app as a form of the monitoring process. Prof. Haniza’s explanation could become examples and options to be implemented by other educational practitioners in creating exciting learning programs for their students. Humas UNS
