UNS – Students from the Faculty of Medicine (FK) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta have once again made the university proud. They secured top positions at several prestigious national medical competitions. These accomplishments reflect their strong academic capabilities, competitive spirit, and unwavering dedication to advancing medical science and health research.

FK UNS Students Shine at the 2025 Scripta Research Festival

At the 2025 Scripta Research Festival (SRF), hosted by FK Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), FK UNS students displayed exceptional talent.
PADIMAS members were given the opportunity to learn various healthy lifestyle practices for individuals with Diabetes Mellitus. Following this, the UNS community service team organized a health exercise session specifically designed for diabetes patients, which was followed by blood sugar level checks after the exercise. The participants were very enthusiastic about this activity.

The first session began with participants completing a questionnaire before receiving educational materials and filling out another questionnaire afterward to assess their understanding of the provided information. The second session started with a blood sugar level check before the exercise, followed by another check after the session concluded.

During the educational activity, the UNS community service team introduced the definition of diabetes, its causes, and the symptoms it may present. Additionally, the session covered topics such as blood sugar level management, the importance of physical activity, the characteristics of healthy foods, adherence to medication schedules, and proper dietary patterns and portions for individuals with Diabetes Mellitus.

After delivering the educational materials, participants were rewarded with door prizes for correctly answering questions about the topics discussed, adding an interactive and motivational element to the session.

During the second activity, the UNS community service team and PADIMAS conducted a health exercise session, which began with a blood sugar level check before the exercise and concluded with another check afterward. This activity aimed to assess the impact of physical exercise on blood sugar levels in individuals with Diabetes Mellitus.

After collecting data on blood sugar levels and participants’ knowledge, the team conducted a detailed analysis. The results showed a significant impact of physical activity in reducing blood sugar levels. Additionally, the analysis of the educational session revealed an improvement in participants’ knowledge following the Diabetes Mellitus education program.

Several PADIMAS members expressed that the program provided significant benefits and motivated PADIMAS elderly members to remain consistent in engaging in physical activities and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

This activity supports UNS in achieving two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3) and Quality Education (SDG 4).

UNS – A team of three lecturers from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Surakarta, has developed an innovative Braille duplicator machine to support learning materials for visually impaired individuals. Their creation, called “SpideSmart,” earned first place in the Assistive Technology Development competition held by the Higher Education Services Agency (LLDIKTI) under Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.

Dr. Subagya, M.Si., and Donni Prakosha, M.Pd., lecturers from the Special Education Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS, collaborated with Dr. Yulianto Agung Rezeki, S.Pd., M.Si., from the Physics Education Program, to design and produce the SpideSmart machine.

“This idea has been in my mind for 25 years. SpideSmart, which is a thermocopy machine, combines the word ‘spide,’ meaning spider or surveillance, because its components resemble a spider and are designed to assist individuals with visual impairments. Additionally, ‘Spide’ represents the initials of our names—Subagya, Yulianto Agung, and Donni Prakosha—while ‘Smart’ reflects both intelligence and our institution, Sebelas Maret,” Dr. Subagya explained to uns.ac.id on Wednesday (18/12/2024).

While advancements in technology have facilitated the reproduction of Braille text, challenges remain in duplicating Braille-based images or graphics. Conventional Braille printers often struggle with entry difficulties, unrepresentative results, and limitations to 63 Braille dot combinations. Addressing this gap, the team’s research aimed to develop a cost-effective duplicator for Braille or tactile graphics.

“Printers for Braille text already exist, but they are limited to reproducing letters. For creating graphics and images, a technology like SpideSmart is essential. During the development process, we faced challenges such as material and resource availability, but we successfully overcame them,” Dr. Subagya added.

The team’s innovation reduces production costs significantly, with SpideSmart’s manufacturing cost at approximately IDR 15 million, compared to imported printers, which can cost up to IDR 120 million. Dr. Subagya hopes UNS will commercialize the assistive technology, benefiting a broader audience, particularly special needs schools.

“I hope this technology can be commercialized and mass-produced by UNS to benefit society at large. If there’s an opportunity for commercialization, UNS could collaborate with capable companies to establish partnerships. This approach would also enhance the university’s branding,” Dr. Subagya said.

The team’s work has been published in the Scopus Q2-ranked International Journal of Educational Research and Innovation (IJERI), showcasing their significant contribution to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and special needs. By supporting inclusivity in education, this assistive technology aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, “Good Health and Well-being,” and SDG 4, “Quality Education.” HUMAS UNS

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) collaborated with the Indonesian Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) to raise awareness and knowledge, particularly among students, about the importance of safe and high-quality food. This collaboration is part of the “Safe Food Goes to Campus” (PAGC) program, which aims to educate young people on food safety.

The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Building, BPOM RI, on Monday (9/12/2024). UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr. M.Si., emphasized the program’s significance, highlighting that students are expected to learn key aspects of food safety, including how to read product labels, identify safe food, and educate surrounding communities on the importance of choosing food that meets safety standards. Through this initiative, UNS and BPOM aim to foster awareness about the significance of consuming healthy and safe food among students, who are seen as agents of change within society.

“This collaboration also aims to foster a campus environment that prioritizes health and food safety. Additionally, UNS students will gain insights into BPOM‘s role in monitoring food and pharmaceutical products in Indonesia and the regulations governing these products,” Prof. Hartono said.

PAGC is designed to provide students with knowledge about food safety and teach them to assess and identify safe food products. BPOM contributes by sharing detailed information on food safety regulations, methods for inspecting product labels, and the risks of consuming unsafe food. “This program encourages students to think critically when selecting food that aligns with safety standards,” Prof. Hartono added.

By increasing students’ knowledge and awareness of food safety issues, the program aims to create a campus community that prioritizes health and safety in food consumption. Students are expected to become agents of change, spreading food safety awareness to the broader community.

PAGC is integrated with the Certified Internship and Independent Study Program (MSIB) under the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek). Launched by BPOM on April 14, 2022, the program has facilitated collaborations between BPOM and 34 universities, public and private, by May 2024.

Since its inception, PAGC-MSIB MBKM has conducted five batches, producing 551 Food Safety Facilitators from student communities who have assisted 503 micro and small food enterprises. Currently, the sixth batch is underway with 125 new facilitator candidates. Moving forward, BPOM plans to expand the program’s reach, signing MoUs with 17 more universities in 2024.

BPOM Head dr. Taruna Ikrar highlighted the importance of this collaboration in addressing broader challenges within Indonesia’s pharmaceutical industry, particularly the heavy reliance on imported raw materials. Currently, 94% of the raw materials for pharmaceuticals are imported, posing risks to supply availability, costs, and resilience.

This partnership aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. The program educates students about ensuring their food is free from harmful substances or does not fall below health standards. It also empowers them to advocate for healthier food consumption habits within their communities.

Additionally, by raising public awareness of the dangers of unsafe food, the program contributes to reducing food-related illnesses, advancing the broader objective of achieving good health and well-being as outlined in SDG Goal 3.
