UNS– Students from the Faculty of Medicine (FK) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta have once again made a mark by securing second place in the public poster category at the 2024 Health Competition of Midwifery Generation (HCG). The event was organized by the Politeknik Kesehatan of the Ministry of Health in Surabaya from October 3-5, 2024.

HCG is a national competition for midwifery students, open to participants from both state and private universities across Indonesia. The UNS team, composed of Rona Arrafi, Shufi Arofiqandil, and Anisa Yusri Ramadhani—fifth-semester students from the S-1 Midwifery Program—clinched the second-place victory.

Rona Arrafi, the team leader, explained that the 2024 HCG competition featured two sub-themes: “The Importance of Optimal Nutrition During the First 1.000 Days of Life” and “Anxiety in Pregnant Women and Its Impact on Fetal Development.”

“Our team chose the second sub-theme because it has received less attention compared to the first one. In addition, anxiety levels among pregnant women in Indonesia are relatively high, making it essential to provide educational materials to raise awareness about this issue,” Rona explained in an interview with fk.uns.ac.id on Wednesday (23/10/2024).

The public poster created by the three students covered a wide range of information, including the definition, prevalence, causes, and impacts of anxiety on the fetus. The poster also offered a solution to help manage anxiety in pregnant women through “Perfect Exercise,” with an accompanying QR code linked to demonstration videos of the recommended movements.

“This feature was one of the key strengths of our team that helped us secure second place,” Rona added. Their concept aligns with sustainable development goals, particularly those focused on achieving healthy and well-being outcomes through practical and easily implementable health solutions.

Despite their busy schedules with coursework, the students made time to prepare for the competition.

“We began preparing for the first round about a month in advance, starting at the end of August. For the final round, we had about a week to get ready,” Rona shared.

The team noted that participating in a national-level competition provided them with numerous benefits. Beyond gaining valuable experience in competing, they had the opportunity to exchange knowledge with students from other universities.

“We had a close competition with Universitas Brawijaya, whose midwifery program is also at the undergraduate level. We shared information about our studies and other academic matters,” Shufi Arofiqandil added.

They expressed hope that more students from FK UNS would be inspired to participate in national competitions and achieve success that would bring pride to their faculty.

“Don’t be afraid to try. It’s better to try and fail than not to try at all. We also just gave it a shot—we didn’t know we would make it to the finals in Surabaya. Just give it a try, and if you fail, try again,” Shufi concluded. Humas UNS

Their essay addressed the theme of anxiety in pregnant women, offering a unique approach to managing this issue.

“Our essay is titled JOURNEY: Non-Pharmacological Therapy to Reduce Anxiety During Pregnancy. We developed an innovation called JOURNEY, which stands for Journal Therapy to Reduce Antenatal Anxiety,” Yesika explained on Wednesday (9/10/2024).

The innovation centers around using a journal for expectant mothers to document their daily emotions and experiences. By expressing their feelings in writing, the technique—known as “expressive writing”—aims to alleviate anxiety in pregnant women.

Nanda Shevira added that their essay stood out due to its practical application. “Many competitors presented only ideas, while we emphasized the innovation itself, even creating a prototype. This, along with some initial testing on respondents, convinced the judges,” Nanda shared.

Despite their busy class schedules, the students found time to prepare for the competition. “Our preparation was flexible; we worked on it outside of class hours, dividing tasks as needed,” Nanda said. Yesika agreed, noting that teamwork and task delegation were essential.

Yesika confirmed this, emphasizing that as a team, task distribution is essential and must be managed effectively. In preparing for the competition, they received guidance from Noviyati Rahardjo Putri, S.SiT., M.Tr.Keb., a lecturer in the Midwifery Bachelor’s Program at FK UNS. “Yes, Ms. Novi (Noviyati Rahardjo Putri, S.SiT., M.Tr.Keb.) served as our mentor,” Yesika shared.

Their advice to students interested in essay competitions is to keep honing their skills by researching various references and exploring new potential without fear.

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta crafted another achievement at the international level. This time the bright achievement was accomplished by three programs collaboration, midwifery, medical science, and mechanical engineering. The team won a gold medal in the World Young Inventors Exhibition category in International Invention, Innovation, and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) Malaysia, Monday (14/2/2022).

The team members consisted of Hafida Salsabila, Tri Rahmaji, Sukmo Utomo Abdillah Amin, Muzakiya Lailatul Karima, Hasna Fatin Hanifah, Muhammad Dzaky Musyaffa, Muhana Fawwazy Ilyas, Muhammad Dzaki Darmawan, Inas Nuha Mumtazah, Hanifah Fathimatuzzahrah, Gading Nasywaa Aji Azzahra, Shastri Cahyaningtyas, and Hidayat Fatahillah. The team was supervised by Dr. Revi Gama Hatta Novika, SST., M.Kes and Ubaidillah, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D.

Dr. Revi Gama Hatta Novika, SST., M.Kes, stated that the product prototype was funded by MBKM Grant and supported by the National Research and Innovation Center (BRIN) Indonesia in the product development stage. The product was named Effleurage Robot, a pain-relieving innovation for mothers experiencing labor contractions or before labor.

Dr. Revi discussed the idea with Ubaidillah, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Rufidah Maulina, SST., M.Sc, Siti Nurhidayati, S.S.T., M.Keb, and Nurul Jannatul Wahidah, S.ST., M.Kes, and her students. The idea came from the Covid-19 condition, which prevented the soon-to-be-mother from having her family member accompany her and provided effleurage massages to reduce her muscle pain. “During the Covid-19 condition, (she) needs something to replace those family members’ role,” Dr. Revi explained on Thursday (24/2/2022).

Effleurage Robot is a chair robot that provides effleurage massage with strong, medium, and soft settings on pregnant women’s hips to reduce labor pain. The robot also reduces the work of people accompanying a mother in labor and is equipped with adjustable features that can be used when walking, sitting, and lying down. The study on Effleurage Robot effectiveness was implemented in Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital for a pregnant woman in 1st stage labor. The research showed significantly reduced pain, showing high effectiveness for stage 1 labor.

Hafida Salsabila, the student coordinator, stated that she obtained lots of experiences and learned from her participation in the grant. The innovation was also submitted for Student Creativity Program (PKM), International essay competition, and MBKM Grant before finally winning the current competition in the Tertiary School category with Biotechnology and Health subtheme. She added that the midwifery and medical science students could prepare the idea of such a robot, but they need help from mechanical engineering to create such innovation. “Thus, the assembly process runs well and creates a usable tool,” she added on Thursday (24/2/2022).

The competition was held by the Malaysian Invention & Design Society (MINDS) in 1989 and was participated by students from various countries. ITEX is a platform for researchers to introduce their innovations and finding to the business community. It is always participated by universities, research institutes, individual researchers, young researchers, and companies. Humas UNS

UNS — Recently, Indonesian social media users were surprised by the prohibition from Aurel Hermansyah’s father-in-law and Atta Halilintar’s father, Halilintar Anofial Asmid, regarding Aurel’s first baby delivery. The father of almost a dozen children asked his daughter-in-law not to deliver her first child through a caesarian section or C-section. The reason? He thinks that C-section will prevent the young couple from building a large family like his. As problematic as it sounds, people’s criticism grew high. Thus, what is the truth of the C-section?

The midwifery faculty member of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Rizka Adela Fatsena, S.ST., M.Keb., shared her opinion. Her concern was mainly placed on the size of the family Atta and Aurel want; for the size of Halilintar’s family, C-section might not be a wise option, although there is no limit for a woman to get a C-section. However, she stated that the decision is up to the couple. “Selecting the delivery method, vaginal delivery or c-section, it is up to the mother and her partner,” Rizka stated on Tuesday (22/2/2022). “Usually, the risk of c-section delivery increases in the third and later deliveries. But it still depends on the mother’s condition and the decision from the doctor or midwife,” she added.

Myth around C-section

Rizka also explained the myths surrounding c-section delivery, including that once a woman had a c-section, she would always have a c-section delivery. “This is not correct because it depends on the mother’s condition,” she said.

Four factors determine the method of delivery for a mother. The first factor is Power, or the mother’s ability to push her baby, then Passage or the size of the mother’s pelvis cavity, Passenger or the baby’s size, and the Psychological condition of the mother. Together the factors are often abbreviated as 4P.

C-section delivery, according to Rizka, is usually selected when the delivery has exceeded the estimated day of birth, premature rupture of amniotic fluid, or breech delivery. “When these conditions do not appear in the second or later pregnancy, the mother meets the 4P, and has no other complicating factors, she could deliver her baby through vaginal delivery,” she explained.

However, if a mother cannot meet one of the 4P factors or has other complicating factors, a c-section will be suggested by a healthcare professional. “The most important outcome is for the mother to deliver her baby safely and ensure that the baby is healthy,” she concluded. Humas UNS
