In his inaugural speech, he introduced the topic “Pragmatics as a New Approach in Analyzing Fine Arts.” He highlighted that linguistic studies often emphasize discourse analysis, making them feel somewhat limited. During his speech, Prof. Slamet pointed out that many linguists still focus on language errors and sentence structures. He noted that they primarily analyze language from a structural perspective. However, he emphasized that language evolves dynamically within society. Pragmatics, as a linguistic study, examines how speakers use language in everyday life, beyond its grammatical structures.

“In this speech, I will discuss three key points. They are pragmatic in analyzing caricature artworks, ornamental wood carvings, and traditional batik art. When analyzing fine arts, we must consider the ‘pragmatic phenomenon,’ which includes inference, reference, presupposition, implicature, and pragmatic force. Additionally, we must always relate these elements to context. Pragmatics relies on context and emphasizes ‘speaker meaning.’ Researchers can analyze fine arts based on their creation context, implicature, and pragmatic force,” Prof. Slamet explained.

Researchers can apply pragmatics to various disciplines, including fine arts, to uncover codes, symbols, and philosophies within artistic works. Prof. Slamet stated that his research consistently employs a pragmatic approach. He uses this approach to analyze fine arts, such as caricatures, ornamental wood carvings, batik art, and paintings. As a linguistic study, pragmatics explores the relationship between language and its context.

Examples of Pragmatics in Fine Arts

One example of pragmatics in fine arts is caricature. “Caricatures serve as both entertainment and criticism. For instance, the caricature Send Me Back to My Mother or My Grandfather conveys satire that emotionally moves readers. It also delivers criticism, particularly during the New Order era,” he elaborated.

Another example is the wood carving motif of monkeys and birds. “The implicature of this motif symbolizes virtue and greed. Its pragmatic force influences people to adopt the bird’s philosophy rather than the greedy behavior of the monkey,” Prof. Slamet explained.

In traditional batik art, classic batik designs carry deep meanings within their motifs. “By analyzing these patterns, we can examine their context, references, implicatures, and pragmatic force,” he added.

The Broader Impact of Pragmatics

In conclusion, Prof. Slamet emphasized that pragmatics applies to various disciplines, including law, economics, and fine arts. “In ornamental wood carvings, pragmatics helps society appreciate the embedded meanings. In traditional batik art, it enables the interpretation of the meanings behind legendary patterns,” he concluded.

UNS Professors Commit to Sustainable Development

Chairman of the UNS Professorial Council, Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc., Ph.D., noted that all six professors acknowledged the importance of sustainability in their respective areas of expertise. Their work, he said, will be eagerly awaited through future research and discoveries, particularly as some of them are still relatively young in their careers.

“There is one term that all six professors seemed to agree upon—sustainable development. We hope they will continue the research and innovations they have started,” Prof. Suranto remarked.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Joko Sutrisno, M.P., has been inaugurated as the 46th Professor in the Faculty of Agriculture (FP) and the 321st professor at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). His expertise lies in Agricultural Resource Economics, and his inaugural speech was titled: “The Economic Valuation of Agricultural Land Conservation to Support Sustainable Food Self-Sufficiency.”

Prof. Dr. Ir. Agung Wibowo, S.P., M.Si. has become the 47th Professor in the Faculty of Agriculture and the 322nd Professor at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). He was officially inaugurated as a professor specializing in the field of Community Empowerment. In his inaugural speech, he presented a lecture titled “Community Empowerment as a Foundation for Integrating Agricultural Development, Creative Economy, and Ecotourism Towards Self-Reliance.”

Prof. Dr. Ir. Widyatmani Sih Dewi, M.P. has been inaugurated as the 48th Professor in the Faculty of Agriculture and the 323rd Professor at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). She has been officially recognized as a professor specializing in Soil Biology. Prof. Dr. Ir. Wahyu Purwo Raharjo, S.T., M.T. has been inaugurated as the 28th Professor in the Faculty of Engineering (FT) and the 325th Professor at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). He was officially recognized as a professor specializing in Manufacturing Engineering Technology. He was officially recognized as a professor specializing in Welding and Fabrication Technology. In his opening remarks, Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc., Ph.D., Chair of the UNS Professorial Council, expressed deep appreciation for the professors’ dedication and efforts in advancing the university. “The contributions made by our senior professors over their long tenure in their respective study programs, faculties, and the institution are visible today. The most important aspect is that their legacy is continued by the younger faculty members,” Prof. Suranto said. 

He emphasized the importance of academic continuity and ensuring the sustainability of knowledge within faculties and departments. “It is also noteworthy that many of our professors have achieved extraordinary milestones, not only in numbers but also in the age at which they were inaugurated. Several have earned this title in their 40s, and some even earlier. The focus moving forward is to ensure that the academic climate we build continues to improve,” he added. 

UNS Rector Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., highlighted the essential role of professors in advancing knowledge and fostering innovation. He noted their influence on shaping character and mentoring students and colleagues. “The knowledge and values they have imparted will continue to thrive and develop within society. Retirement does not mark the end of their contributions but rather the beginning of a new chapter where their dedication and expertise will inspire and benefit future generations,” he remarked.

During the event, two professors, Prof. Sunardi and Prof. Pranoto, delivered honorary retirement orations. Prof. Sunardi’s oration, titled “Differentiated Learning: A Necessity in Modern Education,” emphasized the need for personalized approaches in classrooms. He advocated for minimizing administrative tasks for teachers to allow more focus on fostering student engagement. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of managing heterogeneous classrooms and transitioning from competitive to collaborative and cooperative learning environments.

Meanwhile, Prof. Pranoto shared his research experiences on waste management and water quality. His work included developing Alofan Magic Clay adsorbents, now a key project under the startup Profita Indonesia. He also explored hydrogen as an environmentally friendly fuel source, collaborating with institutions such as Universiti Putra Malaysia, RUDN University in Russia, and several Indonesian universities. 

The event concluded with farewell speeches from the retiring professors, represented by Prof. Istadiyantha, Prof. Soetrisno, and Prof. Wiedy. UNS leadership and the Professorial Council presented mementos to the retiring professors, marking the end of the heartfelt ceremony.
