UNS — A Faculty Member of Psychology Program Faculty of Medical Science (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Berliana Widi Scarvanovi, M.Psi., shared material on Gender Equality in Psychological Perspective as a speaker in Webinar Setara. A webinar held by the Directorate General of Gender Equality Student Executive Board (BEM) of Vocational School (SV) UNS was held through the Zoom Cloud Meeting on Saturday (26/3/2022).

As quoted from the Women’s Studies Encyclopedia, gender is a cultural concept that differentiates the role, behavior, mentality, and emotional characteristics between men and women that developed in society. Berliana stated that it is the time for the young generation to become a generation that is aware of gender equality. She emphasized that gender equality does not mean making women the same as men.

“To be a generation that is aware of gender equality, (we) could start from ourselves. (Create) division of work that does not base on gender, (equal) parenting for sons and daughters, and provides the same opportunity for men and women,” Berliana stated.

She added that these actions would reduce gender discrimination that is commonly found in limiting education, jobs, sexual violence, and domestic violence.

“Gender discrimination will make someone feel humiliated, embarrassed, and intimidated, feeling guilty, declining motivation, and the onset of psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety, nervousness, and disturbance in family life,” she explained.

Berliana also explained that the correct psychological approach to handling such a situation is by providing the feeling of safety, connectivity with others and increasing hope, collecting social and emotional support, and the feeling that they could help themselves.

The supporting factors in facing gender discrimination are comprehension of self-potential and drawbacks, not comparing oneself with others, acting assertive but not aggressive or passive, preparing short-term and long-term objectives, preparing life strategy, and focusing on achieving them.

“Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them,” Berliana concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — Tulus, one of the famous single singers in Indonesia, launched his new album “Manusia” (Human) in March 2022. One of his new songs, Hati-Hati di Jalan (take care), captured music listeners’ attention and was launched to number 1 on YouTube music with 27 viewers by March 2022.

The song tells a story of a couple who shared background, characters, and life purposes, that do not prevent issues from appearing and ending their relationship. Understandably, the relatable lyrics prompted people to replay the song repeatedly, but what is the actual attractiveness of the sad songs? The Faculty Member of Psychology Program Faculty of Medical Science (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Laelatus Syifa, S.A., S.Psi., M.Psi., Psik., shared her opinion regarding the matter.

Laelatus stated that liking mellow songs do not mean that the person is sad because some people listen to the sad song while they are happy. “Sad songs have different meanings and functions for different people, in different conditions,” Laelatus explained on Saturday (26/3/2022).

She added that sometimes this music helps people fix their numb feeling by evoking strong emotions. “Thus, a person thinks reflectively without having a negative event that evokes it,” she said.

Sad music becomes a means to express emotion, evoking emotional responses and providing media for catharsis to represent what people feel. “By listening to sad songs, people could access hard or painful emotions.”

Therefore, sad songs can be the best option to express an emotional feeling that appears because avoiding emotional response will not make someone’s okay.

“I could distance someone from themselves. Thus, evoking increasingly uncomfortable feelings. That’s why people need a way to solve this issue, including by listening to sad songs,” Laelatus concluded. Humas UNS

UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta officially added two new faculties. The Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Jamal Wiwoho, SH, M.Hum., explained that the two new faculties are the Faculty of Psychology and the Faculty of Information Technology and Data Science. The official provision for the establishment of the Faculty of Psychology is contained in the Rector’s Decree No. 319/UN27/HK/2022. Meanwhile, the official provision for the establishment of the Faculty of Information Technology and Data Science UNS is contained in the Rector’s Decree No. 320/UN27/HK/2022. Both Decrees were dated March 11, 2022.

The addition of these two new faculties within UNS brings numerous hopes and expectations. The Rector of UNS hopes for faster and better development in the future for the Faculty of Psychology, which had previously been a Study Program within the FK UNS. “The Faculty of Psychology has long been a program. We hope that the promotion from a study program into a faculty will encourage a faster and better development for the Faculty of Psychology,” hoped Prof. Jamal on Thursday (24/3/2022).

Further, Prof. Jamal considers that the Faculty of Information Technology and Data Science at UNS is a futuristic faculty. The faculty fits perfectly into the disruption era and the 4.0 industrial revolution as it is today. The opening of a new faculty this time went through a different process given the status of UNS as a Legal Entity State University (PTNBH). Prof. Jamal said that the education autonomy owned by UNS now encourages new regulations to open faculties, study programs, and others.

“The establishment process consists of proposal submission from the Rector to the Academic Senate for a review process by the Academic Senate. After that, the Academic Senate will issue a recommendation to open the two faculties,” said Prof. Jamal.

Prof. Jamal also explained a different model implemented regarding the addition of new faculties this time. As Rector of UNS, he reveals that there is no plan to appoint a new Dean for these new faculties. This decision is based on UNS’s status as PTNBH, which allows UNS to have a lean structural position but with broad and rich functionality. “We now have thirteen faculties and two schools. However, this does not mean we need fifteen Deans; it will remain thirteen. In the future, it can be leaner. For fifteen faculties, we could have less than 10 (ten) Deans, for example,” explained Prof. Jamal.

Regarding the UNS New Student Admission Selection (SPMB), these two faculties provide additional admission capacity for the entire track. As reported from UNS Instagram account uploads @spmbuns, the quota for UNS Psychology Faculty students’ admission capacity increased from 150 to 250 people. Meanwhile, the students’ admission capacity for the Faculty of Information Technology and Data Science increased from 80 to 100 people. Humas UNS

UNS — The beauty industry will never falter with numerous new beauty products introduced daily. Its popularity offers a unique opportunity for people to enter the industry, including Aqilla Putri Santoso, a student from Psychology Program Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta class of 2019, who initiated a special mask for acne treatment, branded as Korkoom.

“Korkoom has no distinct philosophical meaning. It is adapted from the Arabic of turmeric. Korkoom is the Arabic of turmeric. The name is selected because turmeric is the mask’s main ingredient,” Aqilla stated.

The Initiation of Korkoom

The idea to start Korkoom began when Aqilla experienced a breakout in her junior high school (SMP), which she solved using a traditional acne mask from her grandmother. Her face was freed from a breakout, and many of her friends were interested in trying the mask. At first, Aqilla shared the mask for free with her friends. However, because many people proved the mask’s benefits, Aqilla started selling the product.

Align with its tagline, Korkoom mask has the benefit of curing acne, acne scars, and breakout. The product is prepared from traditional ingredients proved by many people. “It feels delightful to help. Because I experienced severe breakout. So, I understand the feeling of having prolonged breakout and finally found a product that could help,” Aqilla stated.

The Differences of Korkoom from other Products

“The difference, Korkoom is tested for tens of years, from my mom’s adolescent days to this day, and it is proved to be highly effective. It is affordable compared to other masks or acne spot medicines. Plus, Korkoom’s packaging is modern, although it is a traditional mask,” Aqilla explained.

Aqilla stated that currently, the production process is conducted at home using a traditional process. All ingredients were processed, printed, dried, and packaged at home.

Ups and Downs

Aqilla stated that the positive part of running the business is receiving positive feedback from her customers. “Sometimes, customers texted saying they love Korkoom because it helped their skin problems. A positive testimonial from customers is a mood booster,” she said.

“The downs, actually I enjoy the ups and downs. So, I stay positive. Maybe the time management was a bit challenging. And there were times when I was overwhelmed with assignments. Sad, but keep going because it is the consequence,” she added.

UNS — Spirit doll is widely talked about in social media after one of the Indonesian designers published shared a spirit doll they regarded as their child in their Instagram account from December 2021. The single designer treated their two-spirit dolls like a baby, to the point of creating separate Instagram account for them. Considering the unusual nature of the action, many people were befuddled, and not many even criticized.

Psychology Faculty Member of Faculty of Medical Science (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Dr. Tri Rejeki Andayani, S.Psi., M.Si., also shared her view regarding the matter. She stated that owning a spirit doll in the form of a baby is a normal phenomenon when it is used as a medium to prepare someone for raising a child. This explanation was shared with uns.ac.id on Sunday (9/1/2022).

“For an adult, owning a spirit doll and taking care of it like a baby is quite normal. It even can be used as a medium for nursing or midwifery students to practice their skill,” she stated.

She also explained that any kind of doll for children, including spirit dolls, can be used as pretend play media. That is, the children act as the mother or older siblings who are taking care of a baby. This method is similar to a famous play in Indonesia around the ’90s, Tamagotchi, that demanded its player to take care of a virtual animal in a console. This virtual animal needs to be taken care of from egg to mature, including feeding it, playing, and healing it when it gets sick.

“Similar to the current spirit doll, Tamagotchi also could train responsibility of children before they take care of a real pet,” she added.

Readiness to have a child

In the interview with uns.ac.id, Dr. Tri Rejeki Andayani explained that basically, every person has the need for love and belongingness, quoting Maslow’s needs hierarchy.

“This encourages someone to build an emotional relationship with other people, which once not fulfilled will lead to loneliness,” she said.

She also added that human has the desire to nurture, care for, and help (nurturance). Therefore, owning a spirit doll could become a medium to channel this need. “Because, in reality, not everyone has children or are not eligible to adopt a child. As we all know, the procedure to adopt a child is not easy. It also requires mental and physical readiness,” she added. Therefore, during the waiting time, spirit doll could become an alternative to channel the tendency because it has low risk and is easier to take care of.

Impact

Although the phenomenon harbors a positive function, Dr. Tri Rejeki Andayani reminded that the doll could make someone lose their reality. She stated that spirit doll owners could develop an excessive emotional bond and build their own false reality. “Considering a doll to have a life or could and provide excessive facilities tend to lead to a wasteful effort. When that occurs, the owner’s social environment should help to get them back to reality.” Humas UNS
