UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta continues to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)-based education. It implements a range of innovative programs in schools. One initiative comes from students in the UNS Science Education Program. They joined the Merdeka Learning Grant Program. They are currently providing teaching assistance at SMP Negeri 2 Polokarto, Sukoharjo.

This activity runs from February to June 2025. It is part of the Science for Life (SFL) Class program. The program develops 21st-century skills and emphasizes contextual and project-based learning. Students introduced various educational media and methods through this program. These included science pop-up books, infographics, and digital tools using IoT and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Empowering Junior High School Students Through STEM

A total of 10 UNS students actively participate in the program. The participants are Arief Kurnia Pambudi, Arilistya Kurniawan, and Alifia Nadiatun Najiiha. Other members include Debby Asti Septina, Eka Tias Ambarwani, and Endyas Miftakhuljannah. The group also features Mohammad Nauffal Dzhiyaul Haq, Nurista Ayu Soutul Haqiqi, and Yumna Alhay Munajaeti. Zefanya Widyasari completes the team. All students come from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at UNS. They actively participate in the teaching assistant initiative.

In seventh-grade classes, the UNS students introduced temperature and humidity sensors to demonstrate the application of IoT in science learning. Students conducted simple experiments by recording the school’s environmental temperature data. They then analyzed the data to understand how human activities contribute to climate change and its impact on biodiversity.

Fostering Curiosity and Environmental Awareness

Additionally, students explored the PlantNet app, an AI-powered plant identification tool. By taking photos of leaves and flowers around the school, they could identify plant species scientifically. This hands-on experience not only improved scientific literacy but also increased awareness of local plant conservation.

The use of these digital tools sparked significant enthusiasm among the junior high students. Denisa, a seventh-grade student, shared that she could now understand her surroundings better using simple tools like temperature sensors. Similarly, Qisel, another seventh-grade student from class B, expressed excitement about identifying various plant species using the PlantNet app. “I can now easily identify the diversity around me, from families to species, more quickly. I discovered there are so many types of plants around,” Qisel said.

Tiara Eka Mawarni, S.Pd., the science teacher at SMPN 2 Polokarto, welcomed the collaboration. She noted that IoT and AI-based learning stimulated students’ curiosity and offered meaningful, new experiences. “Science learning using IoT and AI technologies has received positive responses from students. It triggers their curiosity and provides an experience that they have never encountered before,” she explained.

Dr. Riezky Maya Probosari, S.Si., M.Si., and Dr. Muhammad Nur Hudha, M.Pd., supervise the UNS students. They emphasized that this program exemplifies the implementation of the tridharma of higher education. Those are education, research, and community service. It also creates synergy between education and technology.

This initiative expects students to develop ecological awareness and essential 21st-century skills. This activity also contributes to achieving the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on Quality Education. The goal aims to equip learners with knowledge and skills aligned with today’s global challenges. Humas UNS

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta continues to expand its presence on the international stage. One of its students recently participated in the Global Volunteer program, an initiative organized by AIESEC. It is the world’s largest youth leadership organization. Maharani Dean Pramudita, a fifth-semester Sociology student, took part in the Global Volunteer program in Vietnam. This program aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which emphasizes the importance of quality education for all.

Bringing Interactive Learning to Vietnam

Maharani collaborated with Kwok Ka Ho from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Together, they run the “Happy Bus” program at MONTESSORI TƯƠNG LAI, Vietnam. The program lasted six weeks, from December 14, 2024, to January 26, 2025. Its primary goal was to enhance early childhood education in rural Vietnam while fostering cross-cultural understanding. Locally, AIESEC in UNS played a crucial role in providing students with valuable international experiences. The Global Volunteer program is one of AIESEC’s flagship initiatives, designed to develop youth leadership through cross-cultural experiences. It also aims to make a positive impact on local communities.

Educational Games

The Happy Bus program implemented a game-based learning approach, specifically designed for children aged 3–6. It primarily focused on teaching English through interactive and enjoyable methods.

During the first four weeks, Maharani actively served as an English teacher. She also assisted in various educational activities, including swimming classes to develop gross motor skills. Then it was sensory classes to enhance cognitive and sensory abilities. In addition, she added aerobics classes to promote physical health.

“The approach we used was very different from conventional methods,” Maharani said on Thursday (30/1/2025). “Together with the school, I designed various educational games that were engaging and effective. These activities made it easier for children to understand and retain lessons. Seeing their enthusiasm while learning through play was truly rewarding.”

Appreciation from the Principal of MONTESSORI TƯƠNG LAI

The Principal of MONTESSORI TƯƠNG LAI, Huệ Lê, expressed deep appreciation for the dedication and creativity of the Global Volunteer participants. She was particularly impressed by Maharani’s ability to integrate Indonesian cultural values into the learning process. Huệ Lê hopes that similar programs will continue in collaboration with universities in Indonesia, particularly with UNS.

“Maharani’s presence has brought new energy to our school,” Huệ Lê stated.
“Her teaching methods were highly effective and enjoyable. We have seen remarkable improvements in students’ English skills, as well as their confidence and motivation to learn.”

As a result, the collaboration with AIESEC in UNS introduced new perspectives in teaching methods at MONTESSORI TƯƠNG LAI. Many of Maharani’s approaches will serve as references for future curriculum development.

UNS – Novi Nur Priyanti, a student from the Chemistry Program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, has won an award at the International Youth Conference (IYC) 2024 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from August 10-12, 2024. Novi, along with her team, secured two awards: a bronze medal in the health sub-theme category and the best paper award in the general category.

IYC 2024 is an international scientific essay competition organized by the Sentosa Foundation in collaboration with the Nusantara Muda Community, Setara Prisma Nusantara, and the Centre of Entrepreneurial Development and Graduate Marketability at Universiti Putra Malaysia. The event aims to showcase the creativity and innovation of students in the fields of science and technology in the era of Society 5.0.

More than 50 educational institutions from various countries participated in the competition, making the rivalry not just among Indonesian students, but also with students from countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and others.

Novi Nur Priyanti, along with three others—Dofito Hanifah Kusindarto, Latifah Nuraeni, and Syamsul Huda, all of whom are Chemistry students—presented an essay discussing hydrogel for diabetic wounds. The essay’s novelty lies in using hydrogel infused with antibacterial properties derived from natural materials, specifically extracts of the Madagascar periwinkle leaf. As explained by Novi, the hydrogel is also modified to possess thermosensitive and self-healing capabilities.

“Most hydrogels typically have either self-healing or thermosensitive properties. So, we came up with combining both features in our hydrogel product,” Novi explained on Thursday (29/8/2024).

In simple terms, thermosensitivity ensures that the wound stays moist despite temperature changes, while self-healing allows the material to return to its original shape after bending.

Prof. Venty Suryanti, S.Si., M.Phil., Ph.D., Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, Research, and Student Affairs at FMIPA UNS, expressed her appreciation for Novi and her team’s achievement. “We are extremely proud of the international success achieved by Novi Nur Priyanti and her team. This accomplishment demonstrates that FMIPA students can compete on a global level,” Prof. Venty Suryanti said.

Prof. Venty Suryanti also hopes that this achievement will inspire other students to continue innovating and excelling, both nationally and internationally.

UNS – Students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta have developed a specialized milk formula aimed at preventing stunting in lactose-intolerant babies. The product, named Risoymilk, combines rice and soy milk fortified with zinc nanoparticles, significantly enhancing its nutritional content to meet the needs of toddlers and children.

The research behind this innovative formula was conducted by a team from the Student Activity Program (PKM) for Exact Research (RE) UNS, consisting of Tia Febrianti, Ade Eka Yuniar, and Ajeng Fitri Rivalina from the D-3 Pharmacy Program of the Vocational School (SV); Aliya Karima from the Food Technology Program of the Faculty of Agriculture (FP); and Levinahansa Arbelinda from the Pharmacy Program of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA). Their research was supervised by Nindita Clourisa Amaris Susanto, S.Si., M.Sc., a lecturer at UNS.

In an interview with uns.ac.id, Tia Febrianti, the team leader, explained that the inspiration for their research stemmed from the issue of stunting in Indonesia. The government has been actively promoting exclusive breastfeeding and providing supplementary nutrition for children as part of its efforts to combat stunting. However, many mothers face challenges in providing exclusive breastfeeding due to insufficient milk production or the demands of their jobs.

Parents often turn to cow’s milk formula as a substitute, but many children suffer from lactose intolerance, leading to unmet nutritional needs. The UNS students observed that lactose-intolerant babies are often given soy or rice milk, yet parents may not fully consider the nutritional content of these alternatives.

“Our observations revealed that many infants and toddlers dislike soy milk due to its beany odor, unpleasant taste, and lack of sweetness,” Tia said.

Diarrhea in babies fed cow’s milk formula is a common symptom of lactose intolerance, which prevents the baby’s body from properly digesting lactose, resulting in digestive issues such as diarrhea and bloating.
Preventing this condition involves developing alternative milk options that are safe for lactose-intolerant babies. Soy milk is frequently used as a substitute for cow’s milk due to its rich nutrient content. However, soy milk has low carbohydrate content, and its unpleasant taste and odor can deter babies from drinking it.

Rice milk is another common alternative, as it contains carbohydrates. However, rice milk lacks minerals and is generally low in protein. One crucial mineral for child growth and development is zinc.

Zinc, or ZnO, is widely used as a health supplement due to its ability to enhance digestive and immune system functions. When fortified in the form of nanoparticles, zinc offers better stability and faster absorption compared to its standard particle form.

“Therefore, in our research, we combined rice and soy milk to enhance the nutritional content, improve the taste, mask the slightly unpleasant flavor and lack of sweetness in soy milk, and meet essential mineral needs,” Tia explained.

UNS – The Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has graduated a new doctor. The new doctoral graduate, Edy Purwanto, successfully defended his dissertation before his promoters and examiners in an open doctoral promotion exam held in the Multimedia Room of FT UNS Building 4 on Tuesday (30/7/2024). Edy Purwanto was awarded his doctorate with a perfect GPA of 4.0, achieving the highest distinction.

Edy’s dissertation, titled “Strengthening Beam-Column Connections in Non-Engineered Buildings with Steel Plates to Improve Seismic Performance,” addresses the significant earthquake risk in Indonesia. This research is motivated by the fact that most of Indonesia is located in earthquake-prone areas. Earthquakes in Indonesia have caused significant damage, particularly to residential buildings. These damaged houses fail to meet technical requirements for earthquake-resistant structures. Damage to non-engineered buildings (NEBs) often occurs due to the separation of building elements, especially beams and columns. The damage at the beam-column joints is primarily caused by insufficient anchorage length or a lack of strong connections between the beam and column elements.

In engineered buildings, reinforcement materials such as Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), Glass-Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP), Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC), and steel have been widely used. Reinforcement in non-engineered buildings (NEBs) has not been widely implemented, prompting this research to explore the use of steel plates for reinforcement. Steel plates were chosen due to their effectiveness and efficiency, which are comparable to reinforcement materials used in engineered buildings, such as CFRP.

“Surveys of material quality and implementation in NEBs were conducted in the Surakarta (Solo Raya) area and Pacitan Regency,” Edy explained.

The first set of data collected for this research pertains to the quality of concrete. Survey results show that the quality of concrete in most cases is below standard, with strengths less than 10 MPa, whereas the minimum required strength for earthquake-resistant buildings is 21 MPa. Secondly, the reinforcement details do not meet technical standards, including the type of reinforcement (plain and deformed bars), the quantity of reinforcement (insufficient reinforcement ratio), and the development length and anchorage connections between the beam and column reinforcements. Thirdly, the quality of construction in the field is poor because the workers generally lack training in building earthquake-resistant structures.

The conclusions of the study indicate that, first, non-engineered buildings (NEB) in residential areas generally have very poor quality reinforced concrete, both in terms of material quality and workmanship, making them highly vulnerable to earthquake hazards. Secondly, the reinforcement of beam-column joints in non-engineered buildings has proven to be both effective and efficient. This significantly improves seismic performance by increasing load capacity by up to 71,23%, reducing the risk of failure from joint collapse to column sections, and enhancing the undamaged condition under Design Basis Earthquake (DBE) scenarios from 56,08% to 82,41%, and under Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE) scenarios from 29,21% to 66,80%.

Edy recommended several measures to mitigate risks in NEBs: implementing structural reinforcements to prevent catastrophic failure and loss of life and property, and providing training and raising public awareness about earthquake-resistant construction techniques. “Thirdly, enhancing collaboration between government, academia, practitioners, and the private sector to improve earthquake mitigation efforts,” he added.

The head examiner, Dr. Techn. Ir. Sholihin As’ad, M.T., congratulated Edy Purwanto on his achievement. “May your knowledge be beneficial and inspire other faculty members who have not yet obtained their doctorates. Dr. Edy is also a lecturer at FT UNS,” Dr. Techn. Sholihin, who also serves as the Dean of FT UNS, said.

Dr. Techn. Sholihin added that the faculty is actively encouraging more lecturers to pursue doctoral degrees. “We are optimistic that in the next three to four years, 80 percent of our faculty members at FT UNS will hold doctoral degrees,” he concluded.

She also believed that joining the Surakarta Genre Ambassador would provide her with a platform to practice creative and innovative ideas, benefiting the wider community, especially in Surakarta.

“Why did I choose the Genre Ambassador? I wanted an active role and a caring principle that can help improve the lives of teenagers. Additionally, joining the Genre Ambassador is an opportunity for me to develop creative and innovative ideas to improve myself and provide benefits to the broader community,” Annisa, the Advocacy Winner of Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024, said.

Annisa was chosen as the Advocacy Winner after going through various selection stages. Before becoming a finalist, she competed against 72 participants in the selection stages of document screening, written tests, and interviews. The document screening involved a thorough evaluation of personal data, vision and mission, organizational experience, and achievements. Annisa explained that the written test consisted of multiple-choice questions, short essays, and long essays about planned generation knowledge, health, and youth issues. The interview stage was divided into two parts: genre knowledge and self-potential.

“After a lengthy selection process, Alhamdulillah, I was declared a finalist for the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024 along with 19 other participants. Finalists were required to undergo HIV/AIDS and drug tests before proceeding to the next stage. We also underwent a two-week quarantine, during which we received training in public speaking, public testing, advocacy or work programs, talent tests, and rehearsals where we learned about genre knowledge, opening numbers, and opening dances in preparation for the grand final. We also participated in a deep interview stage,” Annisa explained to uns.ac.id on Friday (27/7/2024).

During the final night, Annisa continued to excel and made it to the top five finalists of the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024, where she had the opportunity to present a speech outlining her vision and mission if she were selected as the Genre Ambassador of Surakarta 2024.

“On the final night, Alhamdulillah, I was chosen as the Advocacy Winner for the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024. This title was awarded based on the public testing scores of the work program I proposed. The assessment was based on target accuracy, output, commitment to implementation, and the institutions involved. My work program, ‘Genre BerAKS,’, stands for a generation that is active, campaigns, socializes, and is informative,” Annisa expressed with gratitude.

She explained that her work program encourages a generation to be active in campaigns and socialization, and informative by participating in volunteer activities or conducting the “Ganting” or Stunting Prevention Movement. This program aligns with the urgent need in the community to address stunting, especially in Surakarta.

“The Genre BerAKSI program provides an opportunity for teenagers to play an active role in tackling the stunting problem by collaborating with posyandu cadres and health community institutions to directly engage in the field, offering counseling and monitoring to parents with children experiencing stunting,” she added.

The Advocacy Winner of the Surakarta Genre Ambassador 2024 emphasized that the stunting issue can be addressed and minimized by ensuring nutritious food, maintaining clean water sanitation, and fostering a healthy environment. She also called on all Indonesians to participate in “Ganting” and implement dedicated programs to strive for a stunting-free future.
