Ibrahim Fatwa Wijaya, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., Director of UNS’s Directorate of Planning, Cooperation, Internationalization, and Reputation, highlighted that this year’s THE WUR assessed more than 2.000 institutions across 115 countries and regions, adding 185 new entries compared to the previous year. The ranking evaluation was based on 157 million citations, 18 million research publications, and survey responses from over 93.000 academics worldwide.

In this year’s rankings, UNS was the second-best state university in Indonesia, placing within the 1201-1500 range globally. “Alhamdulillah, UNS ranks as the second-best state university in Indonesia, alongside Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Airlangga (Unair), and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). The top position for state universities is held by Universitas Indonesia (UI),” Ibrahim explained on Monday (28/10/2024).

Ibrahim added that the methodology used for evaluation included academic or teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.

“With this achievement, we extend our gratitude for the support and prayers of the entire UNS leadership, lecturers, staff, students, and alumni. We hope UNS’s accomplishments will continue to grow both nationally and internationally,” Ibrahim stated.

In her speech, Dr. Chatarina Muliana highlighted that this collaboration is a strategic step in solidifying a synergy that will significantly benefit both parties, especially in supporting the implementation of the Tridharma of Higher Education.

“This moment is a strategic step towards advancing superior human resources in Indonesia. I am pleased that although Bank Jatim is a regional development bank of East Java, it does not limit its operations to just that region. We express our gratitude and hope that our joint commitment to enhancing human resource quality, particularly at UNS, will be achieved,” Dr. Chatarina said.

From Bank Jatim‘s side, Arif Suhirman expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with UNS. He also noted that the rapid development of the banking sector facilitates collaboration between Bank Jatim and UNS in education, services, banking, and other fields.

The event invited the UNS academic community, particularly the UNS Bureaucratic Reform Team and the Integrity Zone Development Team. University leaders, heads of bureaus, and faculty leaders also attended. Participants listened to presentations from speakers from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) of the Republic of Indonesia (RI).

Retno Tanding Suryandari, S.E., M.E., Ph.D., Coordinator of the UNS Bureaucratic Reform Team, reported that the team had drafted several regulations to create an integrity zone. She hoped that following this workshop, the UNS academic community could strengthen the supporting regulations currently being formulated.

“These regulations will serve as our foundation for creating an anti-gratification system that we will implement,” Retno Tanding, Ph.D. stated.

Prof. Irwan Trinugroho, M.Sc., Ph.D., Acting Vice-Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Business, and Information at UNS, in his opening remarks, stated that UNS is committed to establishing gratification control. The regulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) being drafted will serve as guidelines for the entire UNS academic community in executing bureaucracy.

“This whistleblowing system supports the success of several programs such as the integrity zone and the PPID (Information and Documentation Management Officer). For us, it is crucial in fulfilling reporting functions. It is time for us to have both preventive and curative tools related to gratification,” Prof. Irwan explained.

The main workshop session was moderated by Retno Tanding, Ph.D. UNS invited Yuanda Angelia Setiawati, a member of the Task Force for the Gratification Control Program, Directorate of Gratification and Public Services, KPK RI. Yuanda, a specialist in Anti-Corruption Campaigns from KPK, engaged the participants in a lively discussion about gratification. She provided unique case examples of gratification in higher education institutions.

Yuanda clearly explained various forms of conflicts of interest and potential gratifications. She also provided practical guidelines for preventing and handling these situations. According to her, integrity and professionalism are the keys to maintaining public trust.

For example, it is essential to distinguish between acts of gratification that constitute a crime and those that are merely customary gifts from close relatives or family. Understanding such nuances requires in-depth learning to avoid misunderstandings and remain vigilant.

“Gratification received by an individual must be reported by the recipient within 30 days of receipt. In addition to reporting through the university’s Gratification Control Unit (UPG), reporting is now also facilitated through an online mechanism via the application managed by KPK, called GOL or Gratification Online,” Yuanda emphasized.

The forum, organized by Commission III of the UNS Professors’ Council, was held in person at the Ballroom of UNS Inn on Monday (15/7/2024). The event aimed to discuss the concept and policies of Indonesia Emas 2045 and their implications for the role and contributions of female academics in realizing this vision. The challenges, potential, and dynamics of the transformation of female academics were explored in depth. The outcomes of the event will be compiled into a book chapter.

Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc., Ph.D., the Chairman of the UNS Professors’ Council, stated that the role of women is essential in creating a quality generation of Indonesians. This is particularly important as Indonesia approaches a demographic bonus. According to him, the role of women is reflected in the family sphere, with family quality significantly influenced by the role of women or mothers.

“When great women ‘color’ the Indonesian population, we are optimistic about having a quality population,” Prof. Suranto said.

He hopes that the forum, featuring esteemed speakers, will inspire Indonesia’s journey towards its golden year. This year represents a time when Indonesia is inhabited by citizens committed to equality. This goal is attainable, considering that Indonesia has even had a female leader.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.S., Acting Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs at UNS, noted that female academics at UNS outnumber their male counterparts. Therefore, he believes that female academics will play a significant role in the development of science and technology and in improving the economic welfare of society.

“The proportion of female students in almost all study programs at UNS is higher than that of male students,” Prof. Yunus said.

The seminar featured two keynote speakers: Prof. Dr. Nunuk Suryani, M.Pd., a professor from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS, and Prof. Dr. Ismi Dwi Astuti Nurhaeni, M.Si., a professor from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNS. The discussion on the topic of female academics was moderated by Prof. Dra. Diah Kristina, M.A., Ph.D.

In her presentation, Prof. Ismi highlighted the potential of female academics. She pointed out that women pay more attention to social inclusion issues. Female academics are also involved in education and critical awareness, such as gender issues.

Another potential lies in the mentorship and support provided by female academics to victims of discrimination. Female academics also foster collaboration and partnerships across various fields of knowledge.

“Female academics have the potential to conduct research and develop policies,” Prof. Ismi said.

The speakers’ presentations were followed by a discussion session. Several senior professors raised questions touching on the essence of the role of female academics. The seminar concluded with a summary of the discussion provided by Prof. Diah, the moderator.

Santoso expressed his hopes for the collaboration between UNS and IKPI. He hopes that this partnership will be particularly beneficial for students of the Accounting and Taxation Study Programs, which are the primary focus of this cooperation. Santoso also invited IKPI to have practitioners teach at UNS to provide real industry experience.

This cultural advantage is one of the key strengths of UNS. The discussion involved UNS’s professors and speakers who addressed the topic “PTNBH Image Towards Global Competitive Excellence.” The UNS Council of Professors, through Commission Three, aims to demonstrate how the PTNBH status opens opportunities for UNS to excel globally.

The Acting Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs UNS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.S., while opening the event, outlined the various targets UNS is pursuing after attaining PTNBH status. The PTNBH image drives the academic community to achieve higher competencies. International collaborations to develop UNS into a world-class university will enhance its global academic reputation.

Efforts to enhance UNS’s academic reputation globally are supported by various stakeholders. Students, as a key component of the academic community, contribute through international study programs such as the UNS Global Challenge, the Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA), and others. Additionally, faculty members contribute through collaborative research, journal publications, and more.

Global excellence will attract more parties to collaborate with UNS. An example is the presence of the Confucius Institute at UNS, which serves as a bridge for cultural exchange, as well as technological and innovation collaborations. Moreover, global excellence will increase the interest of international students to studying at UNS.

“A global academic reputation will also create a positive image for external parties who wish to collaborate and for prospective international students to continue their studies at UNS,” Prof. Yunus said.

Two speakers were featured in the Focus Group Discussion of the UNS Professors Council. They were the Chair of Commission III of the UNS Professors Council and Chair of the PUI Javanologi, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, M.Hum., Ph.D., and the Chair of the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Malang, Prof. Sukir Maryanto, S.Si., M.Si. The Chairman of the UNS Rector Selection Committee (PPR), Prof. Dr. Mohammad Jamin, S.H., M.Hum., in his speech, stated that according to the UNS Board of Trustees Regulation (PMWA) Number 1/2024 on Procedures for Appointing the Rector, Juncto PMWA UNS No. 4/2024 on Election Rules for the 2024-2029 Rector, and Juncto MWA UNS Decision Number 6/UN27.MWA/HK/2024 on the Schedule of the 2024-2029 Rector Election, the screening stage includes feedback from the campus community on Rector candidates, conducted online from June 5 to July 2, 2024, until 11:59 PM WIB. The Public Testing Forum by the panelists was held on Tuesday (2/7/2024). According to regulations, the Public Testing Forum involved a review by panelists consisting of four representatives from the SA and four from the Professors Council. The forum was moderated by Prof. Dr. Agus Kristiyanto, M.Pd., a professor from the Faculty of Sports (FKOR) UNS.

“The Public Testing Forum was attended by members of the MWA, DP, and SA, and streamed live via YouTube channel. This forum is followed by five Rector Candidates,” Prof. Jamin explained.

Prof. Jamin added that feedback from the campus community represents stakeholder participation in the Rector Election so that public opinion can be considered by the MWA, which has the authority to elect the Rector. Likewise, the Public Testing Forum, based on Article 23 paragraph (7) PMWA UNS Number 1/2024, aims to provide the MWA with insights to select a rector with integrity, vision, insight, and interest in UNS’s development. They must also have an understanding of the UNS and national education system, a reliable academic track record, leadership, managerial competence, and socio-cultural competence.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the Rector candidates, panelists, moderator, and attendees who participated in the Public Testing Forum until its completion,” Prof. Jamin added.

Following the Public Testing stage, a Plenary Meeting of the MWA will be held to select the Rector Candidates on July 9, 2024. During this meeting, all MWA members will select three Rector Candidates from the five. After these three are determined, the next stage is the election and appointment of the Rector. The MWA will hold another Plenary Meeting on July 18, 2024, inviting the three Rector Candidates to present their vision, mission, and work programs. The MWA will also conduct a question-and-answer session based on their presentations. This meeting will conclude with the election of the new Rector from among the three candidates.

The final stage of the Rector election process is the MWA Plenary Meeting for the Rector’s Inauguration on August 8, 2024, which will also be broadcast live via the UNS YouTube channel.

The RG VMEE team organized the Green Skills Holiday Camp in the Pusur River area, Tulung, Klaten, managed by Kipas River Tubing from Saturday (22/6/2024) to Sunday (23/6/2024). The camp was attended by 25 students from SMK Negeri 2 Jiwan, SMK Negeri 2 Surakarta, SMK Negeri 5 Surakarta, and SMK Negeri 1 Kaliwungu, Semarang.

The Green Skills Holiday Camp included riverside camping and green skills socialization through learning modules on water turbine installation, 3D printing introduction, and Internet of Things (IoT) technology for water quality evaluation.

The green skills learning modules were developed by a team led by Prof. Dr. Indah Widiastuti, S.T., M.Eng., with team members Taufik Wisnu Saputra, S.Pd., M.Pd., Cucuk Wawan Budiyanto, S.T., Ph.D., and Dr. Danar Susilo Wijayanto, S.T., M.Eng., supported by several students from UNS’s Mechanical Engineering Education and Informatics and Computer Engineering Education programs. The Mechanical Engineering Education students involved included Aling Sangwidi, Agvendo Heksa Mahendra, Diefa Nasywa Aedelia, Dony Setiawan Nur Salim, Irba’ Rizka Putri, Rifai Aditya Pratama Putra, Satriya Nugraha, Sheva Novianto, Siti Fadilah, Rizki Ikhsan Ramadhan, and Linda Widyawati. Additionally, Informatics and Computer Engineering Education students Bangun Panduko Johan, Candra Zulkarnain, and Raihanah Nurul Izzah also participated.

Prof. Indah, as the team leader, stated that this community service focuses on developing green skills in vocational education in response to global demands and the workforce’s needs for better environmental management. Prof. Madya TS. Dr. Aini Nazura Binti Paimin from UTHM, one of the speakers, presented data from CNN Indonesia indicating that Indonesians produce 65 million tons of waste every day.

“Green skills aim to support and encourage sustainable and environmentally friendly practices across various sectors. These skills include the ability to reduce environmental impact, manage resources efficiently, and develop and implement green technologies. Green skills also encompass knowledge of environmental regulations, recycling practices, renewable energy, and sustainable design and production,” Prof. Aini explained.

The primary goal of green skills is to create a greener and more sustainable economy while raising environmental awareness and responsibility among the public. Prof. Aini advised practicing the 5Rs in daily life: reduce, reuse, recycle, renew, and redesign. By applying these principles, individuals can significantly contribute to reducing negative environmental impacts.

“Reduce encourages us to minimize the use of unnecessary items, while reuse promotes the reuse of still-usable items. Recycle involves turning used goods into new products; renew involves restoring natural resources; and redesign means rethinking products to be more environmentally friendly,” she added.

Prof. Aini also urged the younger generation to take active steps, starting with simple actions to preserve the earth. “Every small action counts,” she said.

Awareness and small actions such as reducing single-use plastics, bringing reusable water bottles, or separating organic and inorganic waste at home can bring significant changes if done consistently and collectively. Prof. Aini emphasized that environmental sustainability is a shared responsibility, and the younger generation plays a crucial role in achieving it.

Following the material presentation, participants practiced installing water turbines and using IoT technology to evaluate water quality. Several types of water turbines were introduced, and participants learned how turbines could be developed using 3D printing technology. In this session, participants tested water turbines in the river while measuring the voltage, current, and power generated.

The participants were enthusiastic, as they enjoyed playing in the water while testing the turbines. This activity also provided an opportunity for participants to learn through hands-on experiments with IoT technology and water turbine installation in the river flow.

“This activity can enhance participants’ understanding of the importance of preserving rivers so that their potential can be optimally utilized,” Fefe, a facilitator from Kipas River Tubing, said.

It is hoped that this activity will foster environmental awareness and develop green skills among vocational high school (SMK) students. Vocational education plays a crucial role in equipping graduates with the new skills needed for emerging green job opportunities now and in the future.

In the Open Session of the Academic Senate, Prof. (HC-UNS) Bambang presented a scientific oration on the theme “Realizing Central Authority as Part of the Integrated Justice System under the Authority of the Attorney General’s Office for Optimizing Asset Recovery.” The Central Authority is envisioned as part of an Integrated Justice System under the Attorney General’s Office to optimize the confiscation of assets obtained through corruption located abroad. The return of state assets can be viewed from the perspective of utilitarian theory as the objective of the law. If assets obtained through corruption are returned to the state, it will benefit the country by promoting the welfare of its citizens. The complexity of seizing assets obtained through corruption that are located abroad is partly due to ineffective bureaucratic processes, which weaken law enforcement. Some developed countries, such as Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, and the Philippines, have placed the Central Authority as part of their Integrated Justice System under the Attorney General’s Office. This new concept, if implemented, will positively contribute to the development of criminal law in Indonesia.

“The novelty of this idea lies in the institutional reconstruction of the Central Authority for prosecution effectiveness, the reconstruction of the Central Authority in the principles of dominus litis, the principle of opportunity, and the single prosecution system, as well as the effectiveness of asset recovery abroad,” Prof. (HC-UNS) Bambang explained during a press conference in front of the media in Meeting Room 2 of the Dr. Prakosa Building at UNS on Thursday (27/6/2024).

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between higher education institutions, businesses, and industries to strengthen cooperation and benefit the advancement of knowledge.

Secretary of the UNS Academic Senate, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Jamin, S.H., M.Hum., stated that in addition to his role as Junior Attorney General for Development, Prof. Bambang is also an academic. “He has been teaching at the Faculty of Law at UNS, so we are not merely awarding a title; he is indeed an academic. Therefore, the Faculty of Law at UNS proposed his appointment as a professor. We hope the presence of Prof. (HC-UNS) Bambang will strengthen the teaching team at the Faculty of Law at UNS,” Prof. Jamin said.

The Acting Rector of UNS, Dr. Chatarina Muliana, S.H., S.E., M.H., added that Prof. (HC-UNS) Bambang’s experience as an attorney has qualified him to receive the title of Honorary Professor in Corruption Criminal Law and Asset Recovery. “We hope that the presence of Prof. (HC-UNS) Bambang will support the advancement of the Faculty of Law at UNS,” Dr. Chatarina said.

The parade was lively and featured the UNS Marching Band, a contingent of UNS academic community members dressed in various traditional Indonesian attire, participants from the Solo Batik Carnival, and performers from Reog Ponorogo.

Following the parade, the opening of the Exhibition and Open House took place, which continued until Saturday (22/6/2024). The Exhibition and Open House aimed to introduce UNS to the public. The exhibition included representatives from all Faculties, Schools, Institutes, Centers of Excellence in Science and Technology (PUI), UNS Hospital, the Business Development Agency (BPU), UNS partner banks, and the UNS Women’s Association (Dharma Wanita Persatuan, or DWP). Exhibition booths were set up in front of the dr. Prakosa UNS Building, while the Open House events were held in each faculty.

The coordinator of the 48th UNS Dies Natalis Exhibition and Open House, Dr.techn. Ir. Sholihin As’ad, M.T., explained that this event is the culmination of the 48th Dies Natalis activities that have been ongoing since February.

“Our activities today and tomorrow evening are the final series of the 48th UNS Dies Natalis agenda, which has been running since February. Next to the stage and the lake, there are more than 30 exhibition tents from faculties, schools, institutes, and partner banks. Please visit them. All faculties and schools are also holding open houses featuring various interesting activities, including workshops, competitions, and free consultations,” Dr. Sholihin said.

Dr. Sholihin also mentioned that the exhibition and open house are open to the public, serving as a bridge for the wider community to learn about the activities, products developed, and achievements of UNS.

The Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs at UNS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.Si., expressed his pride in the closing event of the 48th UNS Dies Natalis. He also extended his gratitude to the entire committee and all parties involved in the success of the event.

“The Open House for schools and faculties is a very good tradition that we need to continue. Through this agenda, we can interact more easily with the wider community. Closer interaction will facilitate our contribution to society and mutual support and strengthening. Thank you to the entire committee and everyone involved in making this event successful,” Prof. Yunus said.
