Opening Remarks from Prof. Hartono

Over the past few years, this mass circumcision has been organized regularly by DWP UNS in collaboration with the UNS Anniversary Committee.

Furthermore, Prof. Hartono highlighted that the activity was about providing health services and extending warmth and care to the community. He emphasized that the sense of togetherness created through this event reflects the values of the UNS family.

“Through this activity, we are not only providing medical services but also offering warmth, care, and a spirit of togetherness as part of the UNS family,” stated Prof. Hartono in his remarks.

He expressed his deep appreciation to DWP UNS for their initiative and dedication in conducting this event. He also acknowledged the best support provided by UNS Hospital in terms of facilities, medical personnel, and quality service. Prof. Hartono also appreciated the participating children who courageously took part in the mass circumcision. Bringing Direct Health Benefits to the Community

UNS chose this mass circumcision as a form of community service because of its direct and tangible benefits to the public. This year, the event targeted 100 participants, with an additional quota of 10 for late registrants. Experienced surgical doctors conducted the circumcision procedures. Participants also will get free post-operative follow-up services at UNS Hospital. In addition to medical care, the children received various support items, including sarongs, batok trousers, kopiah (peci), pocket money, snacks, and meals. Through this activity, UNS hopes to strengthen its relationship with the community while making a real contribution to public health.

The circumcision method used was circumcision with tissue glue. This is a modern technique that closes the wound using skin adhesive. This method is safe, effective, and helps prevent infection. This method complies with religious guidelines and is also medically recommended. The same procedure was applied to regular patients, ensuring consistent quality of service.

Participants came from various regions within Solo Raya and were required to be at least 10 years old. Compared to previous years, UNS improved this year’s registration system for a faster and more efficient process. Despite this, the number of participants was still limited, as previous experiences showed that larger numbers led to extended completion times into the late afternoon. Therefore, the quality of service continues to be enhanced to ensure the procedure remains optimal and comfortable for all participants.

This mass circumcision aligns with the third Sustainable Development Goal, which promotes good health and well-being. At the same time, it reflects UNS’s commitment to the university community and the wider public. As an annual initiative with a positive impact, this program is expected to continue with ongoing improvements and increased effectiveness.

The event took place at the Surakarta Mayor’s official residence, Loji Gandrung, on Sunday morning (27/4/2025). It was part of Car Free Day (CFD) event on Slamet Riyadi Street in Solo.

Community Health Initiatives at Loji Gandrung

The event attracted several prominent figures, including UNS Rector Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr. M.Si., and other university and faculty leaders. It began with a joint health exercise, followed by the UNS Expo. The expo featured consultations with specialist doctors. It also included a health talk show on the importance of child health titled “Anak Sehat, Indonesia Kuat” (Healthy Children, Strong Indonesia). In addition, there were free flu vaccinations, medical check-ups for general public and UNS retirees, and a children’s coloring competition.

Collaboration and Gratitude for Support

In his speech, Prof. Hartono emphasized that the event was a clear reflection of UNS’s commitment to serving the community. “Our goal is to provide health services while educating the public on the importance of maintaining health from an early age. We hope these activities can raise awareness of healthy living. It also aims to strengthen the relationship between UNS and the people of Surakarta,” Prof. Hartono explained.

Prof. Hartono also expressed his gratitude to the Mayor of Surakarta and the city government for their support. He also thanked them for facilitating the use of Loji Gandrung as the venue for the event.

“We are very grateful to the Mayor for supporting the use of this official residence,” he added. “We hope that the collaboration between UNS and the Surakarta City Government continues to grow.”

During the event, Prof. Hartono highlighted the diverse range of health services available. “We provided 20 free consultation clinics, covering various medical fields. These included obstetrics, ophthalmology, internal medicine, pediatrics, dermatology, surgery, anesthesiology, and even forensic medicine. UNS Hospital deployed hundreds of medical staff to assist the public,” Prof. Hartono stated.

Additionally, the event offered free flu vaccinations, though the service was limited to 100 people. It also provided free medical check-ups, allowing the public to detect health issues early.

“We hope that this community service activity provides significant benefits, especially in health, by offering free treatments and consultations,” Prof. Hartono remarked.

He also expressed his hope that this face-to-face community service initiative would become an annual event. He wished for it to be held during UNS’s Dies Natalis celebrations in the future.

“I highly appreciate the hard work of the organizing committee and the medical team from Dr. Moewardi Regional General Hospital. It is also for the Faculty of Medicine at UNS, and UNS Hospital. I want to thank all the sponsors who supported this event’s success,” he added.

“This tree planting represents UNS’s commitment to environmental sustainability. It’s more than an anniversary celebration. It’s a meaningful action to raise awareness about the need to protect nature for future generations,” Prof. Suranto said.

Ary Setyawan, M.Sc., Ph.D., from the Faculty of Engineering (FT), also took part in the event. Prof. Ani planted a Mulwo tree (Annona reticulata L.), while Prof. Ary planted a Duku tree.

Prof. Ani noted the symbolic value of planting fruit trees. “UNS already has many lush trees, so this time, we chose fruit-bearing trees to attract birds and wildlife. Mulwo is also a rare fruit nowadays, which is why I chose it. God willing, I’ll take care of it so it thrives,” she said. Prof. Ary explained the meaning behind his choice. “When you peel the Duku fruit, its flesh resembles Arabic script. Planting a Duku tree symbolizes planting knowledge—allowing it to grow and benefit future generations,” he explained.

UNS Strategic Plan: DREAMTEAM

In his report, Prof. Hartono outlined UNS’s Strategic Plan for 2024-2029 as a state university with a legal entity (PTNBH). This plan guides all academic community members in implementing the university’s Tridharma (Three Pillars of Higher Education). This strategy encapsulates the concept of DREAMTEAM, an acronym for Digital, Research, Education, Autonomous, Modern, Together, Equilibrium, Active, and Manpower.

The strategic plan aligns with UNS’s vision. It is “To be a center of excellence in science, technology, and the arts at an international level, grounded in noble national cultural values.” Additionally, Prof. Hartono emphasized the university’s motto, “Mangesthi Luhur Ambangun Nagara”, which translates to “Advancing human society, preserving noble values.”

UNS Achievements in 2024

Throughout 2024, UNS recorded significant performance improvements based on key indicators. Notably, the university achieved an AA rating with a score of 90,5 in the Performance Accountability Evaluation. In December 2024, the Higher Education, Science, and Technology Awards (Diktisaintek) recognized UNS with eight awards. Additionally, UNS ranked fourth among 21 PTNBH institutions in the 2023 Key Performance Indicators (IKU) achievement awards presented in 2024.

“UNS exceeded the gold standard in seven out of eight IKU indicators. The university achieved a total score of 71,82 out of 80,” Prof. Hartono stated.

UNS Advances in Global Rankings

UNS also made significant progress in international rankings. In the QS Asia Rankings 2025, the university climbed 80 places, moving from 301-350 to 221 in Asia. That is its highest position to date. According to Applied-HE, UNS secured the top spot in Indonesia and ranked fourth in Southeast Asia. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (WUR) by Subject 2025, UNS was recognized for its academic excellence. The university was featured in nine out of 11 disciplines. Particularly in Law, UNS ranked 201-250 globally, making it the top Indonesian university in this category.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

UNS maintains its commitment to sustainable development. UNS demonstrates this commitment through its strong standings in THE Impact Rankings, QS Sustainability Rankings, and UI GreenMetrics. The university actively conducts research in tropical herbal medicine and biomedical engineering. Key innovations include turmeric-based beverages, lemongrass and kaffir lime essential oils, and herbal chocolate. In biomedical engineering, UNS has developed Bonne filler, respiratory humidifier, and electrocardiograph pocket devices. The university has also introduced SDG-based technologies. These include IoT-based energy monitoring tools, water filters, low-carbon building blocks, and concrete maturity test devices.

Student Achievements and Institutional Collaborations

In 2024, UNS students earned numerous national and international accolades. Highlights include a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Then there are multiple medals at the 21st National Sports Week (PON XXI) in Aceh-North Sumatra. UNS also secured first place at the 18th National Student Choir Festival (Pesparawi Mahasiswa Nasional XVIII). Students also triumphed in competitions. They are the ATU-NET Sustainability Challenge 2024, GYIS 2024 in Singapore and Malaysia, and the 2024 Energy-Efficient Car Contest.

Between 2024 and early 2025, UNS signed 73 memorandums of understanding and 494 cooperation agreements with domestic and international institutions. Key partners include the Ministry of Trade (Kemendag), National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN), and Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan). Other partners are the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), Bank Indonesia (BI), Financial Services Authority (OJK), and SKK Migas.

Hosting International Conferences and Strengthening Food Security

UNS also hosted several international conferences, including the Applied-HE UNS Xchange in February 2025, attended by participants from over 15 countries. In 2025, the university will host the 16th International Conference of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS). It also includes the International Finance and Banking Society (IFABS) Conference 2025.

Furthermore, UNS contributes to national food security through investigative surveys and agricultural land optimization. This initiative supports the government’s Asta Cita program by providing recommendations on soil analysis, irrigation, and land management.

During the event, Fan Jie, Director of the Confucius Institute at UNS, expressed appreciation for the China Center’s establishment. Representing China, she emphasized that this initiative strengthens the longstanding friendship between Indonesia and China. She hopes the center will enhance cultural and academic exchanges. In particular, she aims to strengthen language and educational development for students, lecturers, and staff.

“The UNS China Center is a testament to the strong friendship between China and Indonesia. As the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations approaches in 2025, we believe this center will continue to grow. It will also contribute significantly to fostering cooperation in various fields,” Fan Jie stated.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Yunus, M.S., Head of the UNS Mandarin Language Center, emphasized the reason behind the establishment of the China Center. The rapid growth of activities at the UNS Confucius Institute prompted its creation. The Chinese Embassy has recognized it as the most active Mandarin Language Center in Indonesia. It aims to accelerate academic and industrial collaboration between UNS and China.

“The Rector and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (MWA) have given their approval. With this support, we are committed to strengthening UNS’s ties with universities in China. We also aim to enhance collaboration with industries in the country. Our main objective is to facilitate student and faculty exchanges while enhancing cooperation with industries in both countries. The China Center will serve as a key bridge for these partnerships,” he explained.

A Strategic Initiative for Global Engagement

Prof. Muliaman Darmansyah Hadad, Ph.D., Chairman of the UNS Board of Trustees (MWA), emphasized the significance of the China Center. He stated that it represents a strategic step in expanding UNS’s international collaborations. According to him, this initiative encompasses three key aspects. They are Business-to-Business (B2B), Government-to-Government (G2G), and People-to-People (P2P), all of which support the university’s global engagement.

Meanwhile, UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, reaffirmed the importance of the China Center. He stated that it will strengthen the university’s collaboration with various Chinese institutions, particularly in education, research, and research commercialization.

“We warmly welcome the establishment of the China Center. This initiative will serve as a bridge for research and education while supporting collaborations in other fields,” he said.

A Mother’s Words That Shaped a Future Leader

During his speech, Dr. Andi Amran Sulaiman expressed deep gratitude and recalled his humble beginnings.

“I was born into poverty and raised in hardship,” he shared emotionally at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium, UNS, on Tuesday (11/3/2025). “But my mother always said, ‘Son, you will become a great person. You will change our fate.’ Her words still echo in my heart.”

Growing up in a rural village, he was one of 12 siblings. His father, a low-ranking soldier, struggled to provide for the family. To survive, they often searched for food in the forest.

“Many of you were born on spring beds, but I was born under a tree. I remember coming home from school, exhausted and hungry, only to find no food available. So, we scavenged for guavas and sweet potatoes in the forest,” he recalled.

The Core Values of Honesty and Hard Work

Despite financial struggles, his parents instilled in him strong values of integrity and perseverance.

“My parents always taught me to be honest and work hard. ‘Never take what isn’t yours,’ my mother would say. I hold on to that lesson to this day,” he stated.

His mother’s unwavering faith in his future was another guiding force. She always told him he would become a minister, even when it seemed impossible. Years later, her words became reality.

“I still remember her saying, ‘Son, you will be a minister one day.’ Deep down, I doubted it, but I never contradicted her. Then, one day, President Jokowi heard about a hardworking young man. That’s how I became part of the 2014 Cabinet,” he revealed.

The Power of a Mother’s Blessing

During his speech, Dr. Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized the importance of cherishing and respecting parents, especially mothers.

“If you want to see God smile, make your mother smile. A mother plays a crucial role in shaping our journey. If you have ever hurt your mother, don’t expect success. I wouldn’t be here today without her,” he asserted.

A Prestigious Recognition for Agricultural Contributions

The Parasamya Anugraha Dharma Krida Upa Bogha award is a recognition of his remarkable contributions to Indonesia’s agricultural sector. However, he sees it as more than just an achievement—it is a responsibility.

“I keep thinking about how I will be held accountable for this, both in this world and in the afterlife. This award is not just for me, but for the people of Indonesia,” he concluded.

Based on UNS Rector’s Decree Number 851/UN27/HK.02/2025, UNS granted the award to Dr. Andi Amran Sulaiman. The honor recognized his leadership, integrity, and achievements in improving Indonesia’s agricultural production index. “We selected him for this award because he is a role model. His contributions to the agricultural sector have significantly improved Indonesia’s production index,” the UNS Rector stated.

Distinguished Attendees

Representatives from the Central Java Provincial Government joined the session. Officials from Kemendiktisaintek and Solo Raya’s regional leaders also participated. It included the Mayor and Vice Mayor of Surakarta. Legislative council members, civil and military officials, and police representatives attended. Religious leaders and key community figures were also present.

Additionally, Prof. Muliaman Darmansyah Hadad, Ph.D., Chairman of the Board of Trustees (MWA) of UNS, participated along with other MWA members. Prof. Dr. Sri Sulistyowati, dr., Sp.OG(K)., Chairman of the Academic Senate, and Prof. Drs. Suranto, M.Sc., Ph.D., Chairman of the Board of Professors, also attended. The event also gathered university leaders, lecturers, administrative staff, students, alumni, and UNS partners.

UNS Strategic Plan 2024-2029

During the session, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., presented the 2024-2025 Annual Report, highlighting UNS’s Strategic Plan for 2024-2029. As a State University with a Legal Entity (PTNBH), UNS aims to strengthen its academic and research framework. It follows the DREAMTEAM concept, which stands for Digital, Research, Education, Autonomous, Modern, Together, Equilibrium, Active, and Manpower.

This strategy guides the Tridharma (Three Pillars of Higher Education). It also aligns with UNS’s commitment to national development.

Commitment to Excellence and Innovation

“UNS upholds the theme ‘Transforming UNS Governance Towards Excellence, Inclusivity, and Impact in Education and Research for National Independence’,” Prof. Hartono stated. He emphasized UNS’s contributions through high-quality research and its application in addressing national challenges.

Prof. Hartono also noted that rapid advancements in technology and the global landscape require UNS to continuously adapt. He encouraged the academic community to drive innovation and create solutions with real-world impact.

UNS Awards and Recognitions

As part of the celebration, UNS presented the Parasamya Anugraha Dharma Krida Upa Bogha, also known as the UNS Award. The university honored Dr. Ir. Andi Amran Sulaiman, M.P., for his contributions to national agricultural development. His leadership significantly improved Indonesia’s agricultural production index.

Additionally, 16 alumni received the UNS Outstanding Alumni Award for their significant contributions to society. Among them were Dr. Budi Santoso, Minister of Trade, and Agus Jabo Priyono, Vice Minister of Social Affairs.

“The role of alumni is vital in strengthening UNS’s network. We hope this recognition will inspire more alumni to contribute,” Prof. Hartono added.

Strengthening Strategic Partnerships

To mark its 49th Dies Natalis, UNS also reinforced its collaborations with strategic partners. UNS signed several agreements with various institutions. The partners included The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag), PT Bank Jateng, PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk, and PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero). These collaborations aim to enhance research, improve education quality, and develop competitive human resources.

A Future-Oriented Institution

The Open Session of the Academic Senate served as a moment of reflection on UNS’s achievements and aspirations. Moving forward, UNS remains committed to being an excellent, inclusive, and impactful institution that significantly contributes to Indonesia’s national development.
