This training aimed to enhance community skills, open up business opportunities, and promote eco-friendly products.

UNS — Students from the Special Education Study Program of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta organized a community training program on producing natural dishwashing soap for residents of Gadingan Hamlet, Trunuh Village, South Klaten, on Saturday (9/5/2026). The activity was attended by 24 local women residents and was also joined by the Head of Neighborhood Unit (RW 04) and local community leaders.

The training program aimed to enhance community skills in utilizing natural ingredients that are easily found in the surrounding environment and transforming them into environmentally friendly household products with economic value. Through hands-on practice sessions, participants were introduced to every stage of producing natural dishwashing soap, ranging from ingredient preparation and mixing processes to product packaging.

This initiative formed part of a community empowerment program initiated by UNS Special Education students under the theme “Strengthening Family Economic Independence through the Production of Natural Soap in Gadingan Hamlet.” Beyond serving as a safer and eco-friendly household alternative, the program was also designed to open opportunities for small-scale home-based businesses within the community.

Head of the Impactful Learning Grant Team, M. Husain Yassar, explained that the activity emerged from the community’s need for practical skills that could be directly applied in daily life.

“Through this training, we hope that the women of Gadingan Hamlet will not only gain new knowledge, but also be able to utilize these skills both for household needs and potential home business opportunities,” M. Husain Yassar told uns.ac.id on Wednesday (13/5/2026).

Participants demonstrated great enthusiasm throughout the activity. They actively took part in demonstrations and practical soap-making sessions alongside the student team.
On Sunday (10/5/2026), the student team continued the initiative by distributing the natural dishwashing soap products to local residents as a follow-up to the training. The products are expected to be independently utilized by the community while also serving as examples of household products made from natural ingredients.

The activity contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.

Through this initiative, UNS students hope to encourage greater public awareness regarding the importance of environmentally friendly products while simultaneously strengthening family economic independence through simple, practical, and sustainable skills.

UNS — The Faculty of Engineering (FT) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a special Connect and Sharing with Alumni session featuring one of its distinguished alumni, Thomas Eppe Safanpo, who currently serves as the Regent of Asmat Regency in South Papua Province. Thomas is an Alumnus of the Architecture Study Program at UNS, class of 1996.

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering UNS, Wahyudi Sutopo, explained that the Connect and Sharing with Alumni initiative is part of the faculty’s ongoing effort to strengthen alumni networks while presenting real-world inspiration for students. According to him, FT UNS alumni have made remarkable contributions across various sectors, including government, industry, and society.

“Through this program, students can directly learn from the experiences of alumni who have successfully contributed at both national and regional levels. We hope the spirit of leadership and public service demonstrated by our alumni will inspire FT UNS students,” Prof. Wahyudi stated during the event held at the FT UNS Seminar Room on Friday (8/5/2026).

During the discussion session, Regent of Asmat, Thomas Eppe Safanpo, encouraged students to continuously develop their competencies, adaptability, and dedication to community service. He emphasized that engineering graduates are expected not only to possess strong academic capabilities, but also social sensitivity and leadership skills.

Thomas expressed his happiness at returning to FT UNS after nearly three decades. According to him, the faculty has undergone significant transformation and growth since his years as a student.

“I feel truly delighted to return to this place. After nearly 30 years, I can see tremendous progress and development within FT UNS. Back in our time, the faculty only had three departments: Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Mathematics. Today, it has expanded with many new study programs and continues to grow remarkably,” said Thomas, who in 2026 received the Outstanding Alumni Award from UNS.

On the occasion, the Regent of Asmat also recalled the long-standing educational partnership between UNS and the government in Papua, dating back to the era when the region was still known as Irian Jaya. Each year, approximately five to ten Papuan students were sent to pursue higher education at UNS across various faculties, particularly in science-related fields such as Medicine, Agriculture, Engineering, and Education.

“I was one of the students given the opportunity to study at UNS, and I personally experienced how valuable that education has been for the people of Papua,” he remarked.

He also conveyed his appreciation to UNS, its lecturers, and the entire academic community for the opportunities and guidance provided throughout his educational journey.

Looking ahead, Thomas expressed hope that educational cooperation between UNS and the government of South Papua could be further strengthened, including the reopening of special classes for Papuan students similar to programs previously implemented. According to him, such initiatives are essential for advancing human resource development in Indonesia, particularly in Papua.

In addition to educational collaboration, UNS and the Government of South Papua Province previously signed a memorandum of understanding on 17 April 2026. The partnership covers various sectors, including education, research, and technological development.

Through this collaboration, FT UNS is expected to contribute to strategic studies and development initiatives, including coastal area development, sea embankment projects, and seawater treatment technology to provide clean water for local communities.

These initiatives are considered highly relevant given South Papua’s vast coastal region and its strategic location bordering Australia, which holds enormous development potential.

Furthermore, opportunities are also being explored for student community service programs (Kuliah Kerja Nyata / KKN) in South Papua, tailored to regional development priorities, including energy, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure sectors.

The forum also highlighted that the development of Papuan human resources should not focus solely on formal education, but also on character building, mindset development, and the ability to adapt within multicultural environments.

Therefore, Papuan students studying at UNS are encouraged to interact and collaborate with students from diverse regions across Indonesia in order to gain broader social experiences and stronger national perspectives.

“We want Papuan students not only to acquire academic knowledge, but also to grow within an environment that nurtures social competence, adaptability, and a strong sense of nationalism,” he concluded.

The SNBT results will be announced on May 25, 2026. Besides SNBP and SNBT, UNS still provides opportunities for prospective students through the Independent Admission pathway,” he added.

The 2026 UNS Independent Admission Selection consists of three admission categories. First, the Regular Pathway, which includes the UNS Written Examination and the use of UTBK SNPMB scores. Second, the Affirmation Pathway, intended for specific groups, including students with disabilities, outstanding students, social welfare applicants, and recipients of the Indonesia Smart College Card (KIP-K). Third, the Partnership Pathway, which includes collaborations with strategic partners and the UNS Alumni Association (IKA UNS).

Through these various pathways, UNS is committed to providing an adaptive and inclusive student admission system capable of attracting talented students from all parts of Indonesia.

Registration for the 2026 UNS Independent Admission Selection is open from May 11 to June 2, 2026. The written examination will be held on June 8–11, 2026.
UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta officially launched the UNS Endowment Fund as a strategic initiative to strengthen the sustainability of quality education. The launch took place at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium on Friday evening (May 8, 2026), alongside the presentation of awards to 18 outstanding alumni.

The event was attended by the Rector of UNS and the Vice Rectors, the Chair of the Board of Trustees (MWA), the Academic Senate, the Board of Professors, faculty leaders, the Mayor of Surakarta, and the Chairperson of the UNS Alumni Association (IKA UNS).

In his remarks, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., stated that during the momentum of the university’s 50th Anniversary in 2026, UNS officially launched the Endowment Fund as a strategic step to ensure the sustainability of quality education in the future.

Over the past five decades, UNS has demonstrated significant contributions to the development of Indonesia’s human resources through quality graduates, innovative research, and impactful community service. These achievements have gained recognition at both national and international levels.

One indicator of the high level of public trust in UNS is its position as the second most applied-to public university in Indonesia during the last two years in the National Test-Based Selection (SNBT). This trust, according to the university, is a mandate that must continue to be maintained and strengthened.

In global university rankings, UNS has shown significant progress and has consistently ranked among the top 10 universities nationally in recent years. In several international ranking institutions, UNS has even achieved a top-five national position. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, for example, UNS ranked second nationally, just below Universitas Indonesia.

Nevertheless, UNS emphasized the importance of preparing for institutional sustainability through a clear and sustainable development roadmap. One of the strategic measures taken is the establishment of the UNS Endowment Fund.

The fund is expected to become an important instrument in strengthening UNS’s independence in implementing various flagship programs while maintaining the sustainability of quality education. Returns generated from the fund’s investments will be allocated toward scholarships for underprivileged students, as well as the development of educational and research infrastructure and facilities. The fund will also support student activities to enhance achievements and institutional reputation, while promoting impactful research and innovation for society.

As of now, the UNS Endowment Fund has accumulated Rp 20,217,502,856, sourced from the remaining RKAT allocations from 2024 and 2025. The fund has already begun to be managed and invested by considering aspects such as returns, security, liquidity, and prudential principles.

The benefits of the UNS Endowment Fund have already been directly felt through the provision of educational assistance scholarships to 23 students.

“The launch of the UNS Endowment Fund tonight marks an important milestone in our collective efforts to ensure the sustainability of quality education at UNS,” he added.

Chair of the UNS Board of Trustees (MWA), Prof. Muliaman Darmansyah Hadad, Ph.D., stated that the launch of the Endowment Fund is a strategic step in strengthening the sustainability of higher education institutions in the future. The launch also became an important part of reflecting on UNS’s five-decade journey as a center of education, research, and community service.

“For five decades, UNS has been an academic home for many generations. From this campus emerged graduates, scientists, professionals, bureaucrats, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and individuals devoted to serving the nation in various fields,” explained Prof. Muliaman.

He further stated that UNS’s achievements are the result of the long-standing efforts of all university stakeholders, including the founders, university leaders, lecturers, educational staff, students, alumni, and strategic partners who have collectively built the university’s reputation and contributions to the nation.

The 50th anniversary serves as a reminder that universities must be prepared to face global challenges. In this context, the launch of the UNS Endowment Fund is viewed as an important foundation for institutional sustainability.

The fund is designed as a sustainability instrument in which the principal amount remains intact, while the investment returns are directed toward supporting education, research, community service, strengthening academic capacity, and assisting students in need.

Furthermore, the Chair of the Board of Trustees emphasized that the success of the UNS Endowment Fund depends heavily on governance that is transparent, accountable, prudent, and oriented toward public benefit. The fund, he noted, must be managed not only with financial accuracy but also with clarity of values. Its purpose is not merely to generate returns, but to ensure that its benefits are directed back to the university’s noble mission and create real impact for society.

“The launch of the Endowment Fund tonight is not merely a ceremonial event. It marks the beginning of a collective movement to safeguard the future of UNS through trust, collaboration, good governance, and a spirit of giving meaningful contributions,” he concluded.

Chairperson of IKA UNS, Prof. Dr. Zudan Arif Fakrulloh, S.H., M.H., also expressed support for the launch of the UNS Endowment Fund as a strategic step to strengthen the sustainability of education and university development.

Similarly, the Mayor of Surakarta, Respati Achmad Ardianto, voiced his support for the initiative, stating that the UNS Endowment Fund could become an important foundation for improving the quality of education, research, innovation, and expanding educational access for future generations.

The event was also attended by the Chair of the Board of Trustees (MWA), the Academic Senate, the Board of Professors, Vice Rectors, Faculty Leaders, and the Chairperson of the UNS Alumni Association (IKA UNS).

UNS recognizes that the various achievements and progress made over the past five decades would not have been possible without the active involvement of its alumni across diverse sectors. The strong network established through IKA UNS, both at the university and faculty levels, across Indonesia and abroad, has become a vital force in strengthening UNS’s position as a State University with Legal Entity Status (PTNBH).

As a form of appreciation for their dedication and contributions, UNS presented the 2026 Outstanding Alumni Awards to 18 alumni who have demonstrated significant contributions to community service, national development, and the advancement of Indonesia in various fields.

“The achievements of UNS and its current strategic role are strongly influenced by the contributions of alumni who continue to actively support the university’s development and provide broad benefits to society,” said Prof. Hartono.

The 50th Anniversary celebration is expected to become an important milestone for the entire academic community and the extended UNS family to strengthen synergy and accelerate institutional progress toward the university’s long-term aspirations.

“What we have achieved over the past five decades should become a strong foundation for accelerating future accomplishments. UNS should not only become a source of pride for the people of Solo Raya, but also for Indonesia as a whole, soaring high while remaining grounded and beneficial to society,” he concluded.

UNS — The Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Smart Hub Building was officially inaugurated by the Mayor of Surakarta, Respati Achmad Ardianto, on Friday (May 8, 2026). Located west of the UNS Rectorate Building, the UNS Smart Hub is expected to become a center for innovation development, collaboration, and digital transformation within the university environment.

In his remarks, the Rector of UNS, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all invited guests, particularly the Surakarta City Government and the management of Bank Jateng for their support and strong cooperation.

The development and management of the UNS Smart Hub Building, which also houses the UNS Sub-Branch Office (KCP) of Bank Jateng, were described as a tangible form of collaboration between UNS and Bank Jateng. This partnership not only provides banking services for the academic community but also supports the creation of collaborative and interactive spaces on campus.

“The presence of the UNS Smart Hub Building is expected to bring significant benefits, not only to the UNS community but also to the surrounding society,” said Prof. Hartono.

In addition to banking services, the building is equipped with indoor and outdoor spaces that can be used for discussions, interactions, and collaboration among students, lecturers, and staff. These facilities are considered important in fostering a productive, open, and innovative academic culture in a modern university setting.

UNS also encouraged its academic community to make optimal use of the facilities at the UNS Smart Hub, both for academic and non-academic activities. It is hoped that the available spaces will inspire ideas, innovations, and collaborations that benefit the wider community.

Going forward, UNS hopes that its partnership with Bank Jateng will continue to expand into various strategic areas, including financial literacy, service digitalization, student entrepreneurship development, and support for other university programs.

UNS — The Faculty of Engineering (FT) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a Soft Launching event for the opening of international undergraduate classes for the Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering Study Programs. The event took place at the Main Seminar Room (RSU) of the Ir. R.P.M. Kasifudin Building, FT UNS, on Friday (8/5/2026). The establishment of these international classes marks a strategic step by FT UNS in supporting UNS’s vision of becoming an internationally recognized university toward a World Class University.

The Dean of FT UNS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Wahyudi Sutopo, S.T., M.Si., IPU., stated that the program represents a concrete effort by FT UNS to respond to the needs of global industries and society for engineering graduates with international competencies and global competitiveness.

“Today, FT UNS has two very special reasons to be grateful, namely the issuance of the Rector’s Decrees regarding the opening of International Undergraduate Classes for the Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering Study Programs,” explained Prof. Wahyudi, who was accompanied by the Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs of FT UNS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Eko Surojo, S.T., M.T.; the Head of the Undergraduate Civil Engineering Program, Dr. Ir. Achmad Basuki, S.T., M.T.; and the Head of the Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Program, Dr. Ir. Joko Waluyo, S.T., M.T.

The international classes were officially established through Rector’s Decree Number 1010/UN27/HK.02/2026 for the Undergraduate Civil Engineering Program and Rector’s Decree Number 1013/UN27/HK.02/2026 for the Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Program. The opening of these international undergraduate classes is the result of extensive collaboration and hard work among the Study Program Management Unit (UPPS), study programs, faculty support units, and various related parties at the university level. The process began with preparation stages, proposal drafting, evaluation by the UNS Institute for Development and Quality Assurance, and ultimately official approval through the Rector’s Decree.

The opening of these international classes is not merely the addition of new academic programs but a concrete effort by FT UNS to address the demands of global industries and society for engineering graduates with international competencies, adaptability, and global competitiveness.

“We hope this program will produce global engineers from FT UNS — graduates who are not only academically excellent but also capable of becoming innovators, problem solvers, and future leaders who create meaningful impacts for global society. Students are expected to gain broader learning experiences through curriculum enhancement, global collaboration, academic exchange, industrial networking, and partnership opportunities with international institutions,” he stated.

Regarding the student selection mechanism, the entire process will follow the governance system of the UNS New Student Admission Selection (SPMB). Requirements for applicants can be accessed through the official UNS SPMB website, and student selection will be conducted through the 2026 Independent Admission Pathway. The first lectures are planned to begin in the Odd Semester of the 2026/2027 Academic Year in August 2026.

Prof. Wahyudi also expressed appreciation to all teams who worked hard throughout the proposal preparation, academic evaluation, and issuance of the rector’s decrees. According to him, international classes are not merely an expansion of academic programs but a platform for producing global engineers from FT UNS.

UNS — The Architecture Study Program of the Faculty of Engineering (FT) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, together with the UNS Japan Study Center (PSJ), conducted a series of international community service activities in collaboration with students from Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (RUAS), the Netherlands. A total of five international students from RUAS, alongside students from the Architecture Study Program’s Urban Rural Design & Conservation (URDC) Laboratory FT UNS, have continuously carried out activities in Sumber Subdistrict. The program began in the odd semester of 2025 and continued into the even semester of 2026.

This program focuses on participatory mapping and environmental advocacy, particularly addressing waste management issues along the Sumber River area. The activities are supervised by Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul Handayani, S.T., M.T., as part of the International Community Partnership Service (PKMI) 2025 scheme under the UNS Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM). The program series includes participatory mapping using the GreenMap method, focusing on waste management, environmental awareness, advocacy for organic fertilizer production through composting, and advocacy for inorganic waste sorting. The activities involve children and teenagers living around the Sumber River, Gadjah Putih River, and Kali Pepe River settlements. These three rivers flow through Sumber Subdistrict, Banjarsari District, Surakarta City.

The community service activities in Sumber Subdistrict were initiated based on preliminary surveys and a series of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). “The residential area along the Sumber River was identified as a priority area requiring intervention due to waste accumulation around the RW 07 dam area. This has caused river flow blockages, increased flood risks, and reduced the environmental quality of the settlement,” explained Dr. Eng. Kusumaningdyah Nurul Handayani.

The first FGD was conducted with community representatives and village officials as part of the participatory mapping process using the GreenMap method. Through questionnaires and the placement of GreenMap icons on a base map, residents actively identified environmental problems and potentials along the Sumber River and Gadjah Putih River corridors. As a follow-up, the second FGD was held with residents of RW 07, one of the affected areas. Discussions focused on evaluating waste management, improving community understanding of environmental issues, and discussing contextual and sustainable solutions.

“The FGD results showed increasing public awareness and motivation to participate in maintaining river cleanliness, although support facilities and cross-sector collaboration are still needed,” she stated to uns.ac.id on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

The next series of activities consisted of practical workshops on organic and inorganic waste management held at Taman Cerdas Sumber. The workshops involved 25 children from the River Care Community. The activities aimed to instill environmental awareness from an early age through education on organic and inorganic waste sorting, compost-making practices, and recycling used buckets into trash bins.

The community service advocacy program continued into 2026. In commemoration of Earth Day on Saturday, April 25, 2026, an advocacy session was held at the RT 03 RW 01 Community Hall focusing on waste management awareness and evaluating the organic compost-making practices conducted in December 2025. The activity involved the same participants, including 18 children who had attended the workshop sessions in the previous semester. The results showed that participants already understood waste sorting but still lacked deeper understanding of organic compost production.

Therefore, it was recommended that future activities focus more on practical waste management work. The Earth Day commemoration was symbolically chosen to reinforce the program’s commitment to environmental preservation and ecosystem sustainability, particularly in the Sumber Riverbank area.

This series of community service activities is part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program. The initiative focuses on participatory mapping and environmental advocacy, especially in addressing waste management issues along the Sumber River area. Students involved in the program included Tjin Groot, Ilias Engel, Kiki Gerritje, Joost Gerardurs, Bartolomeo Pietro Giuseppe Contarini, Aurellia Nadine Alexandra, Chiki Satria Perdana, Faiz Hanuraga Febrianta Prayudhi, Levania Puspa Dewi Hasibuan, and Yusuf Eka Farras.

Through this series of activities, the program is expected to encourage sustainable collaboration among academics, government institutions, communities, and society in addressing urban environmental problems, particularly in riverbank areas.
