He expressed appreciation for selecting their school as the program’s venue. “We are grateful to FEB UNS for this opportunity. I believe it is vital to equip our students with the knowledge to use technology wisely,” Maridi stated.

The session featured Linggar Ikhsan Nugroho, S.E., M.Ec.Dev., a Development Economics lecturer at FEB UNS and a member of the research group. He delivered a presentation titled Introduction to Financial Technology (Fintech).

Linggar emphasized the importance of developing financial and digital literacy from an early age. He noted that many students already use financial technology tools, such as e-wallets, in their daily lives. Often, they do so without fully realizing it.

“At a young age, it’s crucial to understand fintech products and services. This includes learning basic business concepts and recognizing both the benefits and potential risks of misuse,” he explained.

Engaging Approach to Financial Literacy

The session used interactive methods and simple case studies to spark student interest. As a result, students participated actively and asked questions throughout the discussion.

The session featured Eka Dyah Pramusinta, S.E., as the keynote speaker. She encouraged students to use social media wisely, noting that it offers many opportunities for personal development.

Eka also warned about online fraud and gambling, especially as these threats increasingly target younger users.
“Social media offers great benefits—from expanding knowledge to opening digital business opportunities. However, students must remain vigilant about online scams and the rising trend of youth-targeted gambling,” she explained.

Understanding Pseudo Civilization

In his speech, Prof. Bhimo defined “Pseudo Civilization” as a system designed to benefit specific groups while neglecting collective welfare. He explained that the current global economic structure, dominated by neoliberal policies, often leads to inequality, particularly in developing nations.

“Pseudo civilization creates a global economic system that benefits only a small group. As a result, developing countries become economically dependent on foreign debt and international capital flows. Additionally, trade policies controlled by developed nations further reinforce this dependence,” he stated.

He also criticized global institutions, including international trade organizations and donor agencies. He argued that these institutions enforce policies that do not always align with national interests. These conditions, he pointed out, weaken the bargaining position of developing countries in global negotiations.

The Role of Political Economy

To address these challenges, Prof. Bhimo emphasized the importance of a political economy perspective. He believes this approach provides a critical and comprehensive analysis of global economic issues. It takes into account social, cultural, political, and environmental factors.

“Political economy helps us understand that institutions, culture, and policies significantly influence economic prosperity,” he remarked.

He stressed that as a sovereign nation, Indonesia must develop economic policies prioritizing people’s welfare. These policies should align with Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. They should also reduce reliance on global institutions that do not serve national interests.

Challenges and Strategies for Economic Sovereignty

Prof. Bhimo also addressed key challenges that hinder Indonesia’s economic sovereignty. These include dependency on foreign debt, privatization of strategic sectors favoring foreign entities, and limited public access to essential services. He highlighted the financial sector’s dominance as another significant issue.

“Pseudo civilization has made Indonesia structurally dependent on foreign debt, foreign investment, and consultancy agencies. This dependency weakens our control over economic policies and increases economic uncertainty due to global pressures. Many national elites prioritize international economic agreements over national economic sovereignty,” he explained.

To strengthen economic sovereignty, he proposed several strategies:

• Renegotiating international agreements to advocate for fairer trade policies.
• Developing domestic industries to create added value and reduce reliance on imports.
• Raising public awareness of globalization’s impact and promoting economic self-reliance.

Moving Towards Economic Sovereignty

In his closing remarks, Prof. Bhimo emphasized the importance of reducing structural dependence on the global system. He stated that this is crucial for achieving national economic sovereignty. He urged Indonesians to be more critical of global institutions, which often contribute to economic instability.

“Criticism and concrete solutions must serve as the foundation for economic sovereignty. This foundation should be based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution,” he concluded.

“Sustainable development rests on three key pillars: economy, society, and the environment. The economic aspect focuses on resource efficiency and green technology. The social dimension ensures equity and public welfare. Meanwhile, the environmental aspect emphasizes ecosystem preservation through responsible resource management,” he explained.

Challenges and Solutions in Conservation

Prof. Supriyono identified several challenges to sustainable development, including low stakeholder awareness and declining environmental quality. These issues contribute to global warming, climate change, and environmental destruction. Therefore, stakeholders must take an active role in conservation efforts.

“Soil and water conservation should be a top priority. Techniques such as terracing, watershed rehabilitation, and efficient irrigation systems help prevent land degradation. They also effectively address water shortages. Additionally, preserving ecosystems, such as forests and wetlands, helps mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide,” Prof. Supriyono added.

The Importance of Public Awareness

Raising public awareness is essential for effective conservation. Environmental education, stakeholder collaboration, and strong policy support are critical for sustainable implementation. Moreover, partnerships between various sectors can enhance conservation efforts, ensuring a balance between economic growth and ecological preservation.

Prof. Eko’s Academic Journey and Expertise in Taxation

Prof. Eko Arief Sudaryono, originally from Klaten, pursued his higher education at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accounting before pursuing a doctoral degree in Economics at UNS. Since 2021, he has served as the Head of UNS’ Tax Sub-Coordinator.

Prof. Eko is an academic and expert in taxation. He has contributed numerous research studies and scientific publications on tax policy and its moral implications.

The Growing Concern about Tax Avoidance

In his speech, Prof. Eko emphasized that taxation is a critical pillar of national development. It funds essential sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. However, he pointed out that tax avoidance practices have become a significant challenge to the effectiveness of modern taxation systems.

“Tax avoidance exploits regulatory loopholes to reduce tax liabilities. Although legal, people often see it as unethical because it neglects social responsibility. As a result, it diminishes state revenue that should be directed toward public welfare,” Prof. Eko explained.

He also noted that the gap between ethical values and legal frameworks contributes to the persistence of tax avoidance. Moreover, the complexity of the taxation system allows large corporations to shift profits to countries with lower tax rates. This practice exacerbates economic inequality between the wealthy and the underprivileged.

To address these issues, Prof. Eko proposed several strategic measures. He emphasized the importance of instilling ethical tax values from a young age through education. This approach creates a collective awareness of the role taxation plays in promoting public welfare.

Prof. Eko also stressed the need for tax policy reforms to close existing regulatory loopholes and improve transparency within the taxation system. He suggested strengthening collaboration between the government, businesses, and civil society to create a fair and integrity-driven taxation system. Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni, Prof. Ir. Doddy Ariawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., reported that this period’s KKN includes four schemes. 260 students are participating in the Java Partnership Scheme, 231 in the Non-Java Partnership Scheme, 458 in the Faculty Partner Scheme, and 670 in the Thematic-Regular Scheme.

The KKN program will take place in various regions across Indonesia, covering seven provinces. In Java, Central Java and East Java serve as KKN locations, while areas outside Java include Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Maluku, and Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra). This broad distribution reflects UNS’s commitment to serving diverse communities.

KKN activities will be conducted in 22 districts and cities. In Central Java, students will be stationed in 12 locations: Blora, Boyolali, Cilacap, Grobogan, Karanganyar, Klaten, Magelang, Sragen, Sukoharjo, Surakarta, Temanggung, and Wonogiri. In East Java, the program will take place in Madiun and Pacitan. In NTB, students will serve in Bima, North Lombok, and East Lombok. In Bali, the locations are Denpasar and Tabanan. Meanwhile, Lembata in NTT, Central Maluku in Maluku, and Wakatobi in Sultra are also designated KKN areas.

UNS has assigned 83 Field Supervisors (DPL) to guide students during the program. The supervisors are faculty members from 14 faculties and one school, including the Vocational School, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), the Faculty of Arts and Design (FSRD), the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), the Faculty of Agriculture (FP), the Faculty of Sports (FKOR), the Faculty of Medicine (FK), the Faculty of Law (FH), the Faculty of Engineering (FT), the Faculty of Animal Husbandry (Fapet), the Faculty of Psychology (Fapsi), the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB), and the Faculty of Information Technology and Data Science (Fatisda).

UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., conveyed a message to the students, highlighting that KKN is a vital implementation of the Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education), specifically in community service. This program is expected to provide invaluable experiences in character development, leadership, and social skills.

“Through KKN, students are not only expected to apply the knowledge they have gained in class but also to learn from the social and cultural dynamics of the communities they serve,” Prof. Hartono said.

He emphasized the importance of carrying out responsibilities with creativity, innovation, and a sense of accountability. Students were encouraged to build good relationships with local communities, respect their traditions and cultures, and become agents of positive change in their respective areas.

“They will be deployed across seven provinces, from central to eastern Indonesia, carrying programs designed to address the specific needs of the communities,” he added.

KKN is one of the ways that UNS contributes to community service. The program activities can encompass various aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), depending on the types of initiatives carried out. “Environmental justice is a prerequisite for achieving economic justice. With environmental justice, the rights of local and affected communities can be safeguarded,” Prof. Suryanto emphasized.

He argued that sustainability cannot be fully realized through economic development strategies that solely prioritize growth. Economic growth alone has not successfully alleviated poverty or narrowed income inequality. Therefore, development must be inclusive, ensuring benefits reach society’s most marginalized members.

Policy measures must generate tangible positive impacts on local communities. Addressing air pollution and water contamination is essential to mitigating adverse health effects. Prof. Suryanto expressed hope for heightened awareness and a renewed focus on environmental issues. He called for a movement to mainstream environmental considerations into development initiatives.

The Chair of the UNS Professors’ Council, Prof. Drs. Suranto Tjiptowibisono, M.Sc., Ph.D., strongly supports the importance of prioritizing environmental justice. He stated that environmental justice is indispensable in economic development.

In her remarks, Prof. Tri highlighted Indonesia’s transformation from a low-income country to a developing nation and a member of the G-20. Despite this progress, she noted that development remains noninclusive, with high economic growth failing to fully eradicate poverty or address limited access to basic infrastructure. Economic growth has also widened the gap between the wealthy and the poor.

This lack of inclusivity has led to a double burden of malnutrition, where half of children and adolescents experience stunting, wasting, or obesity. While government policies primarily focus on addressing stunting in children, adolescents remain largely overlooked. Malnutrition in adolescents hinders their transition to adulthood, delays the benefits of their second growth spurt, and affects the health of their offspring.

“Malnutrition imposes significant economic costs by reducing cognitive abilities and lowering workforce productivity. It also increases the risk of obesity and cardiovascular diseases, leading to higher healthcare expenses,” Prof. Tri explained.

To reduce the prevalence of adolescent malnutrition, Prof. Tri emphasized the need for school-based intervention policies that consider nutritional transitions. Adolescents are increasingly consuming processed foods, reducing dietary diversity (particularly fruits and vegetables), and facing limited access to nutritious foods in school environments while unhealthy options remain abundant and affordable.

Policy design for addressing adolescent malnutrition should incorporate principles of behavioral economics, where policymakers act as choice architects to influence adolescents’ consumption behaviors. A key approach is implementing nudge strategies to encourage healthier dietary choices among adolescents.

Adolescents often require guidance in their consumption decisions, as they frequently make suboptimal choices, such as poor eating habits or smoking. This is largely due to irrational decision-making processes, where adolescents may lack sufficient attention, access to complete information, or self-control at the moment of decision-making (incomplete self-control).

“We have researched school-based intervention programs to increase the consumption of healthy food by influencing students’ preferences through nutritional literacy and agency, which includes giving students the right to choose their food and improving their purchasing power with subsidies for healthy food. We tested the ‘nudge’ approach in the form of food subsidies and agency for adolescents using a Randomized Control Trial (RCT) method,” Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih said.

Research shows that nutritional literacy combined with food subsidies reduces the consumption of unhealthy food. The intervention is more effective when combining nutritional literacy and nudges in the form of agency, particularly among younger and lower-income adolescents. Therefore, the nudge intervention, which is simple and relatively inexpensive, proves effective in improving healthy food preferences among adolescents, especially those from lower-income groups.

Several policy recommendations suggest that nutritional literacy is effective in influencing healthier eating preferences. However, food subsidy programs alone are insufficient to impact adolescent healthy eating behaviors. School-based programs for adolescents that involve leaders, teachers, and cafeterias are quite effective. An effective program is a combination of nutritional literacy accompanied by food subsidies that grant agency rights to adolescents. Thus, an effective malnutrition policy design for adolescents could adopt nudges and target groups that are responsive to interventions, with an understanding of adolescent behavior and economic backgrounds.

To the newly inaugurated professors, UNS Rector Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr. M.Si., expressed his highest appreciation for their dedication, commitment, and efforts in achieving the highest functional position of a lecturer. The title of professor carries a significant responsibility to continue contributing to the advancement of science, education, and national development. In addition, professors also have a moral responsibility to provide contributions, participation, and work for the progress of higher education institutions and society.

Behavioral accounting, Prof. Y Anni’s area of expertise, explores the psychological factors influencing human decision-making and their impact on accounting information and business practices. Subjective factors such as individual biases and cognitive styles can affect the interpretation and presentation of accounting information.

Prof. Y Anni highlighted that one critical factor influencing behavioral dimensions in accounting is the understanding of ethics. In preparing profit information for financial statements, management’s actions are bound by ethical considerations, which determine whether the actions are right or wrong, honest or dishonest, and fair or unfair. Thus, the quality of earnings relies heavily on the ethical behavior of management in financial reporting.

“In the context of profit reporting, management has the discretion to engage in earnings management. From an ethical perspective, this raises the question of whether such actions are justifiable. A person’s code of ethics and behavior should ideally prevent earnings management,” Prof. Y Anni explained.

The challenge arises when the line between ethical and unethical earnings management becomes blurred. Issues emerge when earnings management escalates into profit manipulation, ultimately lowering earnings quality. Prof. Y Anni’s findings reveal that earnings management practices occur not only in non-financial companies but also within banking sectors, both in Indonesia and globally.

“Our research indicates that female directors effectively reduce earnings management, thereby improving earnings quality. However, this influence is contingent on the inherent characteristics of the female directors,” she elaborated.

Interestingly, female directors with higher education levels were found to have increased motivation for earnings management. Those with educational backgrounds in economics, finance, or accounting also tended to earnings management. However, when these female directors possessed advanced education and expertise in these fields, they displayed fewer incentives to engage in earnings management.

This suggests that female directors with advanced education and specialized knowledge are more attuned to the consequences of earnings management. Furthermore, the tenure of female directors also plays a significant role; longer tenures correlate with reduced earnings management due to increased expertise in organizational management and oversight responsibilities.

Prof. Y Anni’s research concludes that in Indonesia, the presence of women in corporate governance can positively impact companies. Women are believed to demonstrate superior oversight skills and are less tolerant of opportunistic or unethical behavior, making them effective corporate supervisors.

For the UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., this inauguration is not only a source of pride for the newly appointed professors and their families but also for the entire UNS academic community. Prof. Dr. Dra. Francisca Sestri Goestjahtjanti, M.M., expressed her gratitude for the longstanding collaboration between UNIPI and UNS. She stated that implementing Tridharma-based activities will continue to evolve following this renewed partnership. As a private higher education institution, UNIPI strives to enhance its institutional cluster and sees partnerships with institutions like UNS as a means to mutually strengthen institutional development.
