Affectionately known as Dr. Miza, he graduated from the Pediatric Medicine Specialist Program (PPDS IKA) at the Faculty of Medicine, UNS. He completed this program in 2016. Prior to this, he earned his general medical degree from Universitas Indonesia (UI).

A Passion for Pediatric Medicine

Speaking to uns.ac.id, dr. Miza revealed that his passion for pediatrics emerged during his clinical training. He found the Pediatrics rotation the most exciting and engaging part of his medical education.

“It was the only rotation that made me excited to leave the house. I wasn’t lazy, and I never felt like studying was a chore,” he recalled. This strong interest solidified his goal to become a pediatrician.

“I loved the Pediatrics rotation so much that I decided I would only pursue a career as a pediatric specialist. If I couldn’t, I would rather not become a doctor at all,” he added.

Studying at UNS

Interestingly, he did not plan to study at UNS. A casual conversation with a cousin studying at UNS led him to apply to the Faculty of Medicine there.

During his specialist training, dr. Miza experienced a supportive learning environment without excessive seniority or bullying. He appreciated how the faculty focused all learning activities on patient welfare. “At UNS, there was no unnecessary seniority. Everything we learned was genuinely for the benefit of patients — that’s something I experienced from day one,” he said.

Still, adjusting to a new city presented its challenges. Originally from Jakarta, dr. Miza encountered culture shock after moving to Solo.

“That was my biggest challenge. I even contacted my family several times. But thankfully, both FK UNS and Dr. Moewardi General Hospital offered a very supportive learning environment,” he added.

Expanding Pediatric Education Through Social Media

After graduating, dr. Miza returned to RSIA Tumbuh Kembang in Depok, where he had previously worked. Since 2016, he has served as a pediatrician there for over eight years.

In addition to his medical practice, he uses social media as an educational tool. His Instagram and TikTok accounts now have over 500,000 and 90,000 followers, respectively. He began creating digital content in 2017, starting with Q&A sessions that later evolved into engaging video reels.

“It started with Instagram Q&As in 2017 — a kind of semi-consultation. I wanted to make credible pediatric health education accessible to more people,” he said.

Together with three colleagues, he also co-founded klinikkecil.com, a platform initially created to provide teleconsultation services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The site has since expanded to include webinars and online classes on children’s health topics.

“It started with teleconsultation, and then we expanded by creating online classes covering specific pediatric health topics,” he explained.

Encouraging Active Fatherhood and Resilience in Learning

As a father, dr. Miza also advocates for paternal involvement in child development. He urges fathers to spend meaningful, focused time with their children, free from distractions. “Even if it’s just one hour a day, make it 100% presence. No phones, no meetings, no chatting with others. That one hour should be fully devoted to your child,” he advised.

To medical students and learners at UNS, he emphasized the value of learning from failure. “While you’re in pre-clinic, clerkship, or residency, take every opportunity to fail and make mistakes. The most valuable process is learning from those failures. In college, you still have people to correct you — you still get second chances,” he concluded.

dr. Miza’s journey proves that a doctor’s influence can extend beyond hospital walls. By embracing digital platforms and applying the compassionate values he learned at UNS, he continues to educate and inspire a wider audience. He does so one post at a time.

FK UNS Students Shine at the 2025 Scripta Research Festival

At the 2025 Scripta Research Festival (SRF), hosted by FK Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), FK UNS students displayed exceptional talent. They achieved remarkable success at the event. One team—Christopher Daniel Tristan, Nathania Ella Sudiono, and Erlangga Masykur Kynaya—clinched 1st Place in the Literature Review category. Their paper, focusing on Endocrine and Metabolism, explored the growing prevalence of metabolic diseases, a pressing issue in modern medicine.

The same team also earned 2nd Place in the Oral Presentation category with a detailed presentation on Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology. This accomplishment showcases their versatility and in-depth knowledge across multiple medical disciplines. It demonstrates their ability to excel in both theoretical research and oral communication.

Another team, consisting of Faithu Arthuvachivo, Fasha Putri Arkhani, and Raihan Putra Ayudya, claimed 1st Place in Oral Presentation category. Their topic, Endocrine and Metabolism, reinforced FK UNS’s strong reputation in endocrinology research. It also highlighted their ability to present complex medical topics effectively.

Further Achievements in National Medical Competitions

FK UNS students also excelled at the 2025 Scientific Atmosphere (SA) competition organized by FK Universitas Udayana. In this competition, Christopher Daniel Tristan, Caroline Angelique Kuntjoro, and Nathania Ella Sudiono won 2nd Place in Research Paper category. Their paper focused on antibiotic resistance, addressing an urgent global health challenge. This issue continues to have far-reaching implications for medical practice worldwide.

At the 2025 Festival Science Competition (FASCIA), hosted by FK Universitas Hang Tuah, another FK UNS team secured 2nd Place. Helena Adelia Prabowo, Nadia Ramadhina Salfistra, and Jauza’ Athifah Hanun participated in the Public Poster category. Their project covered Clinical Cardiology, highlighting the critical importance of public education in preventing heart disease. It also promoted heart health awareness.

These remarkable achievements demonstrate FK UNS’s ability to compete and thrive in national medical research competitions. LAM-PTKes Appoints Assessors

LAM-PTKes appointed two assessors to conduct the reaccreditation process: dr. Nurcahya Setyawan, Sp.B-KBD, and Dr. Muhammad Arifin Parenrengi, dr., Sp.BS(K). They conducted an on-site assessment of the UNS Surgery Residency Program on Monday and Tuesday, April 21–22, 2025.

The assessment began with a formal reception of the assessors at the Dr. Prakosa Rectorate Building. UNS Rector Prof. Dr. Hartono, M.Si, along with several faculty leaders, welcomed the assessors. Among them was Prof. Dr. Sarwanto, S.Pd., M.Si, Head of the Institute for Educational Development and Quality Assurance (LPPMP) UNS. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rohmadi, S.S., M.Hum, Head of the National and International Accreditation Unit of LPPMP UNS, also attended. dr. Heri Dwi Purnomo, Sp.An., Interim Director of Dr. Moewardi General Hospital, was present. Prof. Dr. Reviono, dr., Sp.P(K), Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, also took part. The vice deans and Head of PPDS Surgical Science Study Programme of FK UNS, Dr. dr. Widyanti Soewoto, Sp.B, Sups.Onk (K) also participated as well.

Commitment to Quality Education

In his remarks, Prof. Hartono reaffirmed UNS’s strong commitment to improving education and healthcare services. “The Faculty of Medicine at UNS collaborates with Dr. Moewardi General Hospital to improve education quality. They implement the Tri Dharma of Higher Education in all programs, including the Surgery Residency Program,” he said.

He also expressed hope that the feedback and suggestions from the assessors would contribute to further advancements in the program.

Clarification on the Accreditation Process

During the session, dr. Nurcahya clarified that the assessors’ role was to verify the accuracy of the information submitted in the accreditation documents. “We are here to observe whether the realities match what was presented in the accreditation forms. We observe and report as part of our role. LAM-PTKes will evaluate the program based on our findings,” he explained.

On-Site Evaluation and Facility Inspection

Following the reception, the assessors joined faculty and program leaders. They proceeded to the UNS Faculty of Medicine Auditorium for the on-site evaluation. The day included presentations by the Dean and Program Head, followed by a Q&A session. The assessors also interviewed faculty members about lecturer-to-student ratios and curriculum delivery. Additionally, student representatives provided input on academic and non-academic services. Alumni employers also shared insights regarding the competencies of the program’s graduates.

On the second day, the assessors visited Dr. Moewardi General Hospital and UNS Hospital to inspect the residency program’s facilities. They also conducted interviews with students and medical staff at both hospitals. The visit included inspections of the UNS Library and the anatomical laboratory. The team also visited the animal testing laboratory managed by the Faculty of Medicine. The accreditation process concluded with a presentation of the assessors’ preliminary findings, marking the end of the site assessment phase.

In her academic report, Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs, Dr. Eti Poncorini, dr., M.Pd., shared that FK UNS has graduated 2,038 medical specialists and 2 medical subspecialists. This achievement has been accomplished since the faculty’s founding in 1976. These graduates now serve across Indonesia, contributing to healthcare services, education, research, and roles in government, private sectors, and the military.

Among the 16 new graduates, 4 completed the Surgery Study Program, 4 graduated from Internal Medicine, and 2 graduated from Neurology. Additionally, 2 graduated from Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, 2 from the Subspecialist Internal Medicine Program, and 2 from Psychiatry. Iin Novita Nurhidayati Mahmuda, dr., Sp.P.D., Subsp.P.T.I.(K), who achieved a GPA of 3.96, earned the highest honors. Hanifan Danu Wijaya, dr., Sp.P.D., the youngest graduate at 29 years and 7 months, also completed the Internal Medicine Program.

In his address, Prof. Reviono emphasized the importance of integrity and excellence in their professional duties. “I have three key messages. First, professionalism through mastery of competence. Second, integrity—being a resident is a phse of being a doctor with the highest integrity. And third, networking,” he stated.

Prof. Fitria also encouraged the graduates to uphold the good name and reputation of UNS. She highlighted that their contributions to national development are highly anticipated. “Show your integrity, deliver exceptional achievements, and demonstrate compassion for the community, regardless of race or social group,” she added.

Seven graduates completed their studies in this period. Three came from the Pediatrics Study Program, three from Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, and one from Psychiatry. Among them, Sofia Kusumadewi, dr., Sp. J. P., graduated from the Cardiology and Vascular Medicine Study Program. She achieved the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3,87. Meanwhile, Safitri Tia Tampy, dr., Sp. A., was the youngest graduate in this ceremony. She completed the Pediatrics Study Program at 29 years and 10 months old.

In his speech, FK UNS Dean Prof. Reviono emphasized the importance of professionalism. He reminded newly appointed specialist doctors to uphold it in their medical careers. He highlighted integrity and professionalism as the fundamental values instilled throughout their education.

“Professionalism comprises several key components, including competence, responsibility, and patient safety, which are essential aspects of medical ethics. Additionally, having a strong and positive professional network is crucial for continuous learning and career development,” he stated.

Rigorous Selection Process

The new students successfully passed a two-stage selection process. This process was conducted through the UNS New Student Admission Selection (SPMB), which began in November 2024. The process involved an online Academic Potential Test (TPA) and an English proficiency test. The next stage was an offline evaluation, which included a medical check-up, psychological test, program interview, and subject knowledge test. Additionally, the evaluation covered a portfolio assessment. It also included interviews with university leaders and the management of dr. Moewardi Regional General Hospital (RSUD).

“Out of 378 applicants, 94.71% advanced to the second stage. Finally, the selection committee officially inducted 112 candidates,” Vice-Rector for Academic and Research Affairs, Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si., reported.

How Fasting Affects the Body

dr. Amelya explained that fasting changes metabolism. The body first uses stored energy from the liver and muscles. After 12 hours, the body depletes these reserves and starts breaking down muscle tissue for energy. “The body first burns energy from the liver and muscles. When those run out, it breaks down muscle instead of fat,” she said. The body also adapts by slowing metabolism and regulating hormones. As glucose levels drop, insulin decreases, and glucagon rises to boost energy production.

What Is Balanced Nutrition?

Balanced nutrition means consuming a variety of foods in proper proportions to meet daily macronutrient and micronutrient needs. Macronutrients include proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. They provide energy. Micronutrients consist of essential vitamins and minerals. They support overall health. “To maintain energy levels and productivity while fasting, proper nutrition is essential,” dr. Amelya emphasized.

A Practical Approach: The Isi Piringku Concept

A helpful guideline for balanced nutrition is the Isi Piringku (My Plate) method. This approach divides a plate into three sections. One-third is for staple foods, which provide carbohydrates. Another third is for vegetables, which supply fiber. The remaining section includes fruits for vitamins and side dishes for protein.

The Importance of Hydration

In addition to food intake, maintaining proper hydration is crucial. dr. Amelya recommended drinking at least eight glasses of water daily. A suggested schedule includes four glasses during sahur. Drink one upon waking, one after eating, and two before fasting begins. Another four glasses should be consumed from iftar until bedtime. Drink one at iftar, one after a heavy meal, one after Tarawih prayer, and one before bed.

Foods to Limit or Avoid

Certain foods can negatively affect fasting. dr. Amelya advised limiting sugary foods because they cause rapid blood sugar spikes. She also recommended reducing salty or high-sodium foods since they increase urination and cause dehydration. Additionally, she suggested avoiding caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee, as they promote fluid loss. Fatty or fried foods should also be avoided, as they are harder to digest and may increase stomach acid levels.

Recommended Foods for Sahur and Iftar

For sustained energy, Dr. Amelya suggested eating high-fiber and complex carbohydrates during sahur. These foods digest slowly and keep you full longer. For iftar, she recommended breaking the fast with water and fruits. This allows the body to restore energy gradually before eating heavier meals.

Fasting Tips for Individuals with Health Conditions

For those with diabetes or hypertension, consulting a doctor before fasting is essential. Hypertension patients should limit high-sodium foods to prevent excessive strain on the heart. Meanwhile, diabetes patients must regulate complex carbohydrate intake to avoid hypoglycemia, a sudden drop in blood sugar. Symptoms like dizziness, excessive sweating, and fatigue indicate low blood sugar. If these occur, immediate blood sugar checks and breaking the fast are necessary. “If blood sugar drops drastically, do not force yourself to continue fasting. It is better to break the fast and take prescribed medication,” dr. Amelya advised.

Maintaining a balanced diet and staying hydrated help people fast in a healthy and beneficial way. FK UNS aims to raise public awareness about the importance of balanced nutrition for overall health during Ramadan.

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) coordinates the consortium.

Advancing Digital Learning in Medical Education

DISCERN DSS focuses on scenario-based learning, an interactive approach that helps medical students develop essential digital competencies. This method not only improves knowledge transfer but also strengthens capacity building among lecturers and academic staff.

To kickstart the project, a Kick-off Meeting took place on February 11-13, 2025, in Brussels, Belgium. The meeting allowed partner institutions to align their strategies and define objectives. They also planned the project’s implementation for the next three years (2025-2027).

Three delegates represented FK UNS. They are Prof. Ari Probandari, dr., MPH., Ph.D. and Vitri Widyaningsih, dr., M.S., Ph.D. It also includes Amandha Boy Timor Randita, dr., M. Med. Ed., Sp.K.F.R.

During the meeting, the consortium agreed on several digital soft skills development programs. The consortium will integrate these programs into the medical education curriculum. One key initiative is the Training of Trainers program, which will take place in Yogyakarta in 2025.

Shaping Future-Ready Medical Professionals

Prof. Ari Probandari highlighted the project’s significance. She emphasized that Indonesian medical students must master both clinical competencies and digital technology to thrive in modern healthcare.

“This project will create a more advanced learning environment. It will make medical education more interactive and relevant to real-world challenges,” she stated.

Furthermore, the digital skills acquired at the undergraduate level will continue to develop during professional education and lifelong learning. This initiative ensures that future healthcare professionals integrate digital expertise into their daily medical practice.

The inaugural speech was titled “Community-Based Clinical Immunology: Lessons from the Covid-19 Pandemic and Future Anticipation.” Prof. Tonang emphasized the critical role of clinical immunology. He highlighted its importance in tackling public health challenges. In addition, he specifically discussed its importance in the post-Covid-19 era. His expertise promises to make lasting contributions to the field and society at large.

Academic Background and Expertise

Prof. Tonang is a highly regarded academic specializing in Clinical Immunology. Born in Boyolali, he earned his undergraduate degree from the Faculty of Medicine at UNS. He went on to obtain his Master’s and Ph.D. in Molecular Immunology from Tottori University, Japan. Additionally, Prof. Tonang completed his Clinical Pathology Specialist Program at UNS. He also completed his Clinical Immunology Subspecialist Program at the Indonesian College of Clinical Pathology (Patklin).

Throughout his career, Prof. Tonang has made substantial contributions to the medical field. From 2015 to 2024, he served as Vice Director of UNS Hospital and has been a consultant for PT Prodia Widyahusada since 2021.

The Covid-19 Pandemic and Clinical Immunology’s Role

In his speech, Prof. Tonang reflected on how the Covid-19 pandemic reshaped the understanding of clinical immunology in Indonesia. The country’s first Covid-19 case was reported on March 2, 2020. Peak cases occurred between July and September 2021. By the time the WHO declared the end of the pandemic on May 5, 2023, Indonesia had recorded 6,78 million cases and 161.404 deaths. The Indonesian government officially lifted the Covid-19 emergency status through Presidential Decree No. 48 of 2023 on August 4, 2023.

“Clinical Pathologists (Sp.PK) played a vital role throughout the Covid-19 patient management process,” Prof. Tonang noted. “Their responsibilities ranged from early diagnosis and treatment to ongoing monitoring and recovery assessments.” He also pointed out that while the pandemic may be officially over, the virus has shifted to endemic status. This shift requires a community-based approach to clinical immunology.

Expanding Clinical Immunology in Public Health

For Prof. Tonang, Clinical Pathologists must apply their knowledge not only in hospitals and laboratories. They must also apply it in pre-hospital and post-hospital care. He emphasized the importance of integrating Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) and Value-Based Medicine (VBM) into clinical immunology practice.

During the pandemic, public communication about clinical immunology evolved significantly. Initial misinformation sparked debates, but over time, the accuracy and clarity of information improved. As an academic, Prof. Tonang underscored the need for medical professionals and scientists to act as communicators. He emphasized their role in bridging the gap between science and public policy.

“Being a bridge often involves challenges,” Prof. Tonang explained. “It can lead to misconceptions about one’s stance, whether supporting or criticizing the government, helping or blaming society. Yet, the principle of clinical immunology is to ‘be everywhere without taking sides, but contributing everywhere.’”

Recognition and Commitment to Future Research

For his contributions to clinical immunology and public health policy, Prof. Tonang received several prestigious awards. These included the Achmad Bakrie Award in Medicine (2022) and the Health Communicator Award from the Ministry of Health (2023). Moreover, he also received as the Best Presenter Award at ICOMESH 2023.

As a professor, Prof. Tonang is committed to advancing community-based clinical immunology research and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare. “We must work together. We complement one another to build a better future for society and anticipate future health emergencies,” he concluded.
