UNS – The Faculty of Sports (FKOR) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta hosted a Sports Science Seminar on Friday (2/5/2025). The seminar focused on the theme “Reflecting on Spiritual Values in Sports.” Prof. Dr. Muchsin Doewes, dr., S.U., AIFO, MARS., served as the keynote speaker for this enriching event.

The Dean of FKOR UNS, Prof. Dr. Sapta Kunta Purnama, M.Pd., officially opened the seminar and welcomed the initiative. He highlighted the seminar as a significant convergence of sports science and spiritual values. He also emphasized the essential role of spirituality in athletic pursuits.

A New Perspective on Sports and Worship

In his presentation titled “Sports as Form of Worship,” Prof. Muchsin discussed the role of sports in improving physical performance. He explained that sports can also serve as an act of worship. He also pointed out the importance of approaching sports with the right intentions and methods.

Prof. Muchsin then addressed the alarming rise of non-communicable diseases in Indonesia. He mentioned that these diseases are largely linked to lifestyle factors, such as physical inactivity. He noted that diseases like diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, and cancer are preventable with healthy lifestyle choices, including regular physical activity.

“Healthy lifestyle choices, such as consistent physical activity, can prevent about 80 percent of non-communicable diseases,” he stressed.

The Role of Spiritual Awareness in Sports

Throughout his talk, Prof. Muchsin criticized the public’s reliance on quick-fix solutions. He specifically mentioned the “poly pill” concept for treating illnesses. He emphasized that engaging in regular physical activity offers comparable health benefits without the harmful side effects of medications.

“Allah has provided us with everything we need to exercise within our bodies. It’s free and risk-free,” he affirmed. He also discussed the spiritual dimension of sports. He referenced verses from the Qur’an, including Surah Az-Zukhruf verse 15 and Surah Ibrahim verse 34. Those are to remind attendees of the blessings of health. Prof. Muchsin emphasized that neglecting our physical health is not a divine curse, but a result of our own actions.

“Diseases caused by physical inactivity are not a curse from God, but rather the result of us wronging our bodies,” he explained.

The seminar concluded with Prof. Muchsin stressing the importance of integrating both physical and spiritual health practices. He expressed hope that future seminars would continue to inspire attendees to prioritize both forms of well-being.

“We must continuously give thanks for the blessing of health by taking care of it. One way to do this is through exercise, which also holds the value of worship,” he concluded. Humas UNS

They are collaborating to develop the Special Sports Class (KKO) program. The partnership began with a coordination meeting at the FKOR UNS campus. The meeting aimed to prepare for the program’s launch in the 2025/2026 academic year.

Coordination and Planning for KKO Program Development

The coordination meeting brought together the leadership of SMA Negeri 1 Slogohimo and FKOR UNS representatives. They discussed essential aspects of the KKO program, including student admissions, curriculum design, athletic coaching, and teacher training. These steps are critical to ensuring the program’s success.

Prof. Dr. Sapta Kunta Purnama, M.Pd., Dean of FKOR UNS, expressed the faculty’s dedication to supporting sports education. He emphasized the importance of strengthening sports programs at the high school level. “We welcome SMA Negeri 1 Slogohimo’s initiative to launch the Special Sports Class. FKOR UNS is committed to developing the curriculum, providing educator training, and enhancing coaching. This partnership aims to integrate athletic development with academic and scientific approaches. It serves as a model for future Special Sports Class programs,” Prof. Sapta remarked on Tuesday (29/4/2025).

Renewal of Cooperation Agreement and Future Plans

Both parties also renewed their cooperation agreement, which is set to expire this year. “SMA Negeri 1 Slogohimo has worked with FKOR UNS before, and we are renewing this agreement to continue our collaboration. FKOR UNS will support the training and development of KKO students to improve their athletic achievements,” Prof. Sapta added.

Kuntari Purwaningsih, S.S., Principal of SMA Negeri 1 Slogohimo, expressed her hope for the collaboration. She hopes it will cultivate a new generation of athletes who excel both in sports and academics. She noted that the KKO program aims to identify and nurture young sports talent in Wonogiri Regency and surrounding areas.

In the coming months, technical teams from both institutions will develop a schedule for outreach activities. They will also work on the student selection processes and learning plans for the KKO program. The program organizers plan to launch it in the 2025/2026 academic year. It will serve as a model of collaboration between secondary and higher education institutions and foster competitive sports development.

This partnership supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It particularly focuses on Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). It highlights the commitment of both UNS and SMA Negeri 1 Slogohimo to institutional improvement. The partnership also emphasizes sustainable development through educational collaboration.

UNS – Fasting during Ramadan does not have to prevent you from staying active and maintaining physical fitness. You can continue working out safely while fasting with proper timing, suitable exercise types, and the right intensity.

Prof. Dr. Sapta Kunta Purnama is the Dean of the Faculty of Sports Sciences (FKOR) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. He is also a professor of sports science and emphasized that exercising during fasting is highly recommended for maintaining health. Many professional athletes continue training during Ramadan without disrupting their worship.

Best Time to Exercise During Ramadan

According to Prof. Sapta, the ideal time to exercise is in the late afternoon, just before iftar. “This allows the body to receive immediate energy intake after physical activity,” he explained on Monday (3/3/2025).

Recommended Exercises While Fasting

Choosing the right type of exercise is crucial. Activities with light to moderate intensity are best, such as:

Walking or brisk walking

Jogging

Cycling

Aerobics

Other low-impact workouts

However, avoid high-intensity exercises if the iftar is still far away. “Excessive sweating can lead to dehydration since fluid replacement must wait until iftar. Therefore, it is best to exercise closer to breaking the fast,” Prof. Sapta advised.

Essential Tips for Safe and Comfortable Exercise

Before exercising, always warm up to prevent injuries. Likewise, cooling down after workouts is equally important.

Maintaining a balanced diet during suhoor and iftar is key to staying energized. Proper hydration is also essential. “Drink water first when breaking the fast, followed by a warm sweet drink. Avoid consuming cold or iced beverages immediately,” Prof. Sapta recommended.

To ensure sufficient nutrition, consume foods rich in carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, protein, and fats. Proper food intake plays a significant role in maintaining fitness during fasting.

Additionally, pay close attention to your body. Stop exercising immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous, have difficulty breathing, or experience chest pain. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, consult a doctor before starting any physical activity.

“For exercise duration, I suggest around 20-30 minutes,” Prof. Sapta concluded.

By following these expert tips, you can stay fit and healthy throughout Ramadan while observing your fast safely.

“Through KKN, students are not only expected to apply the knowledge they have gained in class but also to learn from the social and cultural dynamics of the communities they serve,” Prof. Hartono said.

He emphasized the importance of carrying out responsibilities with creativity, innovation, and a sense of accountability. Students were encouraged to build good relationships with local communities, respect their traditions and cultures, and become agents of positive change in their respective areas.

“They will be deployed across seven provinces, from central to eastern Indonesia, carrying programs designed to address the specific needs of the communities,” he added.

KKN is one of the ways that UNS contributes to community service. The program activities can encompass various aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), depending on the types of initiatives carried out.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Tri Hadi Karyono, S.Pd., M.Or., highlighted that partnerships are a critical component of Key Performance Indicator (KPI) 6, which involves study programs collaborating with industry and other external stakeholders.

“In executing partnerships, several principles must be upheld, such as equality, productivity, delivering significant benefits to the university, considering cost and benefit factors, and adhering to ethical values,” Dr. Tri Hadi, who is also an alumnus of UNS’s Master’s Program in Sports Science, stated.

Dr. Tri Hadi Karyono elaborated on the steps for building effective partnerships, including mapping stakeholders, gathering and analyzing information, conducting partnership explorations, developing collaboration plans, drafting agreements, signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoU), implementing partnerships, monitoring and evaluating, and improving partnerships.

“Partnerships hold significant value, such as strengthening an institution’s role as an initiator of change, benefiting both the institution and its partners, expanding networks to boost competitiveness, increasing the employability of graduates, and enhancing global awareness and quality among academic members. These partnerships ultimately improve graduate competitiveness in national and global markets while elevating institutional reputation,” Dr. Tri Hadi added.

FKOR UNS lecturers participating in the workshop had the opportunity to engage directly with Dr. Tri Hadi, discussing effective strategies for establishing mutually beneficial partnerships and addressing potential challenges in the process.

For this year’s Pra Popnas, UNS aims to be part of the historical moment where the vibrant youth spirit meets a shared love for the nation. Prof. Hartono also expressed his hope that all participants would compete with sportsmanship and uphold fair play throughout the event.

“We are offering our full support by providing both infrastructure and human resources, particularly through the Faculty of Sports (FKOR) UNS, to enhance the development of the national sports ecosystem,” Prof. Hartono said.

He emphasized that this event symbolizes unity and togetherness. It is not only a chance for athletes to achieve their best but also a platform to strengthen bonds of brotherhood. Several sports competitions will take place at UNS venues, including badminton and boxing at FKOR UNS, football at UNS Stadium, and sepak takraw at UNS Sports Hall (GOR).

The opening ceremony of Pra Popnas 2024 Zones II and III was held at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium, UNS. The event was attended by notable figures, including Dr. Surono S.Pd., M.Pd., Deputy for Sports Performance Improvement at the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora); Dr. M. Aziz Ariyanto, Assistant Deputy for Sports Achievement Development Centers (SPOP) Kemenpora; and other officials from Kemenpora. Also present were Dr. Bayu Rahadian, Secretary of the Indonesian National Student Sports Development Board (Bapopsi), along with other Bapopsi leaders; Dhoni Widianto, the Interim Mayor of Surakarta; and representatives from 14 provinces participating in Zones II and III.

“We warmly welcome you to Universitas Sebelas Maret. It is an honor to be a part of this prestigious event. Young athletes from across the country have gathered here to showcase their best skills and build a sense of unity,” Prof. Hartono told the guests.

Pra Popnas is more than just a sports competition; it is a platform for character building, promoting sportsmanship, and fostering the fighting spirit of young students. For Prof. Hartono, this event is a significant moment in nurturing the physical and mental well-being of the young generation. It serves as an opportunity to instill important values in the nation’s future leaders.

“I appreciate the hard work of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as the Bapopsi leadership, for organizing this event with great dedication. The participation and collaboration of all parties, including coaches, officials, and supporters, are key to the success of this event. I am confident that with the young generation at the forefront, the future of Indonesian sports will shine on both national and international stages,” he added.

To the young athletes, this moment represents a golden opportunity to prove the results of their extensive training and preparation. Prof. Hartono encouraged them to compete with a spirit of sportsmanship and integrity, whether in victory or defeat. He highlighted that the experiences gained in this arena would serve as valuable lessons for their future, not only in sports but also in everyday life.

The Pra Popnas 2024 sports event aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG Number 3: Good Health and Well-being. Sports activities like Pra Popnas play a significant role in supporting the physical and mental health of young athletes. Engaging in sports enhances quality of life, reduces the risk of diseases, and improves overall health. Moreover, such programs contribute to improving the physical fitness of the younger generation, positively impacting their well-being.

In addition to SDG Number 3, the Pra Popnas 2024 event also aligns with SDG Number 4: Quality Education. Events like this are often integrated with educational athlete development programs. Many young athletes participating in Pra Popnas are simultaneously pursuing their academic education while honing their athletic skills. This supports the principle of holistic education, where learning encompasses both academic and non-academic skill development.

Prof. Fitria, representing UNS leadership, extended congratulations to the PPG UNS graduates, expressing pride in the high pass rate. She noted that the knowledge gained over two semesters, including Field Experience Practice (PPL), will be beneficial for both the graduates and the broader development of Indonesia’s education sector.

“This graduation is not the end of your journey but the beginning of your responsibilities as professional educators. The teaching certificate you have earned shows that you are ready to face the challenges of the educational world,” Prof. Fitria stated.

She further encouraged the graduates to continuously update their knowledge, as the education sector is constantly evolving, especially with the rise of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), which increasingly influences education.

“With AI developments, students may quickly adapt to the latest technologies, so as educators, it’s essential to keep up with these advancements,” she added.

The emergence of new teachers from the PPG FKIP UNS also contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting quality education for all. The SDGs aim to ensure inclusive, equitable, and lifelong learning opportunities. One of the quality education indicators within the SDGs is the percentage of teachers meeting the national standards, which include a bachelor’s degree or D-4 qualification and a teaching certificate, as mandated by the Ministry of Education.

UNS –Dr. Sapta Kunta Purnama, M.Pd., a professor of the Sports Science study program at the Faculty of Sports (FKOR) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, discussed the state of disability sports in Indonesia. Speaking at a press conference titled “Government Commitment to Equal Opportunities in Sports Achievements” on Thursday (10/10/2024), Prof. Kunta, who also serves as the Head of Athlete Development for the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Indonesia, shared insights on NPC Indonesia’s roadmap to prepare athletes for the Paralympics.

NPC Indonesia is the primary agency responsible for recruiting, developing, training, and nurturing top-tier international disability athletes. It also coordinates disability sports activities at regional, national, and international levels.

“The NPC Indonesia is the dedicated agency managing elite-level sports, with the ultimate aim being participation in the Paralympics,” Prof. Kunta said.

The recently concluded XVII National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) in Solo, Central Java, served as a recruitment ground for new talent. We positioned talent scouts across various sports venues, as few national competitions offer a comparable platform for talent identification.

“This Peparnas also serves as a talent-scouting event. We monitor potential athletes at each venue. For example, in para-athletics, 16 athletes have shown promising potential for development. In para-archery, two athletes delivered outstanding performances, marking them for further growth,” he explained.

In the short term, the Peparnas XVII also aids in selecting athletes for the 2026 ASEAN Para Games (APG) in Thailand. NPC Indonesia has outlined a strategic approach, leveraging Peparnas as a step in preparing athletes for new events in the multinational competition. APG 2026 will feature 20 sports, an increase from the 14 included in the 2023 APG held in Cambodia.

“We are preparing athletes for 20 sports for the APG in Thailand,” he noted.

Prof. Kunta also highlighted UNS’s support for disabled athletes in pursuing higher education. Scholarships for undergraduate through doctoral programs are available for national and international athletes, reflecting UNS’s commitment to inclusion and achievement.

“Currently, FKOR UNS has seven disability athletes enrolled, with some already graduated. Additionally, Karisma Evi, an exceptional athlete, studies at UNS’s Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP). This initiative aligns with UNS’s inclusive policies supporting educational opportunities and athlete accomplishments,” he explained.

Addressing the pathway to becoming a strong disability athlete, Prof. Kunta emphasized that accurate disability classification is essential. There is a system of numbering and intervals to determine specific classifications, which is vital for identifying suitable sports.
