UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital has significantly contributed to the national healthcare sector. On Tuesday (2/7/2025), the Arrhythmia Division medical team at UNS Hospital successfully performed a groundbreaking cardiac procedure. For the first time in Indonesia, a Bluetooth-enabled Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) was implanted in a patient.

The Director of UNS Hospital, Prof. Dr. Pamudji Utomo, dr., Sp.OT(K) also attended the press conference. He expressed his gratitude for the procedure’s success, which marked a significant advancement for healthcare services in Solo Raya. “On July 2nd, we carried out a very monumental procedure for UNS Hospital and also for Indonesia, which was the implantation of a cardiac device in a patient suffering from arrhythmia. We are announcing this achievement to share the news and raise awareness of arrhythmia, especially among the people of Solo Raya,” said Prof. Pamudji on Wednesday (9/7/2025).

The Bluetooth-Enabled ICD Implantation on a Patient

This procedure marked a historic moment in treating heart rhythm disorders in Solo Raya and across Indonesia. An 84-year-old female patient with a medical history of coronary artery disease and degenerative conditions underwent the operation. She had been experiencing recurrent episodes of syncope due to a life-threatening heart rhythm disorder (arrhythmia).

After a series of examinations, the patient was advised to receive an ICD implant as a preventive measure against sudden cardiac arrest. dr. Irnizarifka, Sp.J.P., Subsp.Ar(K), an Electrophysiology and Heart Failure specialist at UNS Hospital, led the procedure.

dr. Irnizarifka reported that the procedure went smoothly without any complications. He explained that the Bluetooth technology featured in this ICD represents one of the latest innovations in the medical field. With this advancement, the patient can now monitor the device’s condition wirelessly via Bluetooth, which connects to an application on the patient’s smartphone. “The ICD we implanted yesterday uses the latest technology. This is the first Bluetooth-enabled ICD implanted in Indonesia,” said dr. Irnizarifka.

Previously, patients who required an ICD implantation had to be referred to hospitals in Jakarta. Now, similar services can be accessed at UNS Hospital, supported by modern facilities and professional medical staff. The Director of UNS Hospital, Prof. Pamudji, regarded this success as a result of interdisciplinary collaboration within the hospital.

What is an ICD?

An ICD is a small medical device implanted under the skin in the upper chest. It keeps track of the heart’s rhythm, provides pacing, and delivers automatic electric shocks when dangerous arrhythmias occur. This device is life-saving for patients at risk of sudden cardiac arrest due to irregular heart rhythms.

A Strategic Milestone for Cardiac Care at UNS Hospital

This success marks an essential step in advancing cardiac care at UNS Hospital. The Arrhythmia Division is also committed to continuously improving its services so that patients in Solo Raya and nearby regions can receive the best possible treatment. Moreover, this technology provides wider access for patients in areas with limited advanced medical facilities. Patients no longer need to travel to other cities or abroad for advanced cardiac treatment.

“Medical professionals in Indonesia can now diagnose arrhythmia and are fully prepared to implant ICDs. There are 56 arrhythmia specialists across the country,” added dr. Irnizarifka.

UNS Hospital is committed to providing the Indonesian public with cutting-edge, technology-based healthcare services. The hospital will continue to invest in medical staff training and the procurement of modern medical equipment. UNS Hospital is continuously advancing its knowledge and services to become a national referral center for the treatment of heart rhythm disorders. This achievement also shows UNS’s important role in supporting the progress of national healthcare services.
Humas UNS

UNS – Cardiologists from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital, who are also lecturers at the UNS Faculty of Medicine, hosted a public education session. They emphasized the importance of improving the quality of life for patients with heart failure. The session carried the theme “Heart Failure Doesn’t Stop Us”. Additionally, UNS Hospital organized it to commemorate the 2025 Heart Failure Awareness Day.

Dr. dr. An Aldia Asrial, Sp.JP., FIHA led the event along with two other specialists. They were Dr. dr. Habibie Arifianto, Sp.JP.(K), M.Kes, FIHA and dr. Irnizarifka, Sp.JP., SupSp. Ar. (K), FIHA, FAPSC, FAsCC, FHFA. The UNS Hospital YouTube channel broadcast the session on Tuesday (6/5/2025).

Understanding Heart Failure

Heart failure occurs when the heart cannot pump blood effectively to meet the body’s needs. This reduced function causes fluid buildup in the lungs, abdomen, and legs. Common causes include hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, valvular disorders, and pregnancy-related heart disease.

“Fluid buildup in the lungs can lead to shortness of breath. Accumulation in the abdomen causes bloating, while buildup in the legs leads to swelling,” dr. Habibie explained. He added that people should seek immediate medical help if they experience certain symptoms. These include shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling, loss of appetite, sudden weight gain, or irregular heartbeat.

New Hope for Heart Failure Patients

In the past, many people considered a heart failure diagnosis a dead end. However, medical advancements now offer patients the chance to live better, longer lives. dr. Habibie explained that modern medications have proven effective in the last five to ten years. These medications reduce death rates, decrease hospitalizations, and improve the quality of life.

Treatment Guidelines Based on the Four Pillars

dr. An Aldia elaborated on the “Four Pillars” of heart failure therapy. These include:
• ARNIs (Angiotensin Receptor–Neprilysin Inhibitors) or ACE inhibitors or ARBs
• Beta-blockers like bisoprolol
• MRAs (mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists)
• Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2 inhibitors)
Doctors may also add diuretics to relieve fluid retention.

Equally important is adherence to medication schedules and a healthy lifestyle. “Doctors apply chronotherapy, aligning medication intake with the body’s natural rhythm,” dr. Habibie added. Doctors should prescribe beta-blockers to be taken in the morning. They should recommend taking diuretics on an empty stomach.

Regular physical activity also plays a role. Doctors encourage patients to exercise moderately for 150–200 minutes per week, spread across several sessions. According to dr. An Aldia, they regard physical activity as the fifth pillar in enhancing life quality.

The Role of Family Support

Support from family is critical—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. dr. An Aldia emphasized that family members act as motivators, helping patients stick to treatment plans and maintain healthy habits.

Cardiology Services at UNS Hospital

The American Heart Association has certified the UNS Hospital Heart Failure Clinic. It provides patient-centered treatment based on updated guidelines. Expert cardiologists staff the clinic and use advanced therapy models. “At UNS Hospital, we record all symptoms, medications, and progress,” dr. Irnizarifka said. “Our clinic treats approximately 1,400 patients annually. Patients with heart function below 40% can experience significant improvements within nine months. By consistently following three or four main treatment pillars, they may even achieve normalization.”

A Call for Greater Awareness

The UNS medical team urges the public to seek early evaluation if they observe heart failure symptoms. Prompt treatment allows patients to continue contributing to society actively.

dr. Irnizarifka concluded the session by emphasizing that heart failure does not limit the potential of patients, families, or physicians. With the right approach, a good quality of life is achievable. She added that this initiative supports the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG): Good Health and Well-Being. HUMAS UNS

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital recently held a “Live Healthy Dialogue Event,” an educational program discussing kidney transplantation. The hospital streamed the session, titled “Must Kidney Donors Come from Family?”, live on its YouTube channel. It was also shared on the hospital’s social media platforms.

Expert Insights on Kidney Transplantation

dr. Evi Liliek Wulandari, Sp.PD., M.Kes., a medical practitioner at UNS Hospital, led the discussion. Dr. Wachid Putranto, dr., Sp.PD-KGH.FINASIM, an internal medicine specialist and kidney consultant from the Faculty of Medicine UNS, joined her.

dr. Evi opened the discussion by highlighting the high prevalence of kidney failure cases in Indonesia, particularly in Solo Raya. Dr. Wachid supported this with data. He stated that Solo has 35 hemodialysis service units, most of which have long waiting lists.

“This reflects the rising number of kidney failure patients and the urgent need for effective treatments. Kidney transplantation is not just an alternative but the best solution to improve patients’ quality of life,” he explained.

Understanding Kidney Transplantation

Dr. Wachid explained that kidney transplantation involves transferring a donor’s kidney to a recipient. This procedure offers a better quality of life compared to dialysis.

Unlike dialysis, which requires frequent hospital visits and long-term treatment, a successful kidney transplant offers a better alternative. It allows patients to regain much of their normal daily activities. This therapy enables them to work, travel, and engage in physical activities with fewer restrictions compared to dialysis-dependent individuals.

“Kidney transplantation serves as the ideal treatment for chronic kidney failure patients. Living individuals or deceased donors under specific conditions can donate kidneys. However, in Indonesia, deceased organ donation is still in its early stages due to various challenges,” he said.

Kidney Donation: Does It Have to Be from Family?

Many believe that kidney donors must be family members, but this is a misconception. Friends or even unrelated individuals can donate a kidney.

Dr. Wachid referenced the case of Selena Gomez, who received a kidney from her best friend. However, he emphasized that donors must meet specific criteria. These include blood type compatibility and cross-match test results to reduce rejection risks.

“In advanced medical centers, surgeons can perform transplants across different blood types by following transfusion guidelines. Medical professionals also conduct cross-match tests. A lower cross-match value indicates a lower rejection risk,” he explained.

Additionally, medical professionals do not impose a strict age limit on kidney donors as long as they are in good health. However, they prefer donors under 60 to minimize complications.

How Kidney Transplantation Works

Kidney transplantation is a complex procedure requiring thorough preparation. The surgery typically lasts five to six hours. During the procedure, doctors ensure the new kidney functions properly.

Recovery time varies for each patient. Typically, kidney donors can resume normal activities within a few weeks. Recipients, however, may need a longer recovery period with close monitoring to ensure the organ functions optimally. Post-surgery, patients must follow strict medication schedules to prevent rejection.

Certain conditions, such as autoimmune diseases like granulomatosis with polyangiitis, may disqualify a patient from receiving a transplant.

Is Kidney Donation Safe?

Dr. Wachid reassured that long-term risks for kidney donors are minimal.

“People can live normally with one kidney, provided they maintain a healthy lifestyle and undergo regular check-ups,” he said.

For recipients, the biggest risk is non-compliance with post-operative medication, which can lead to transplant failure.

To improve transplant success rates, medical teams provide patients with personalized post-operative care. This includes scheduled check-ups, dietary recommendations, and lifestyle guidance. This ensures that recipients can sustain their health while adapting to life after transplantation.

Does BPJS Kesehatan Cover Kidney Transplants?

A participant asked whether BPJS Kesehatan—Indonesia’s national health insurance—covers kidney transplants.

“Yes, BPJS Kesehatan covers kidney transplant costs, including surgery for both donors and recipients. However, some preliminary tests may not be fully covered,” Dr. Wachid explained.

Additionally, BPJS covers essential post-transplant medications, such as tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil, reducing financial concerns for patients.

Despite the financial assistance, awareness about kidney transplantation remains limited. Many Indonesians are still hesitant due to cultural beliefs and misinformation. Public education programs play a crucial role in addressing these concerns. Initiatives like UNS Hospital’s health dialogue encourage more people to consider organ donation.

UNS Hospital’s Vision for Kidney Transplant Services

UNS Hospital is developing its facilities to become a kidney transplant center in Solo Raya. Besides modern hemodialysis units, it plans to introduce kidney biopsy services for early disease detection.

“We are working on pre- and post-transplant consultation services. With the knowledge and experience I’ve gained, I believe UNS Hospital has great potential. It can become a leading kidney transplant center in the region,” Dr. Wachid said.

The Importance of Early Detection

Dr. Wachid emphasized that chronic kidney disease (CKD) is rising, even among younger individuals.

“Uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension are the leading causes. To prevent them, individuals should focus on early detection, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and attending regular check-ups. Taking preventive measures is always better than seeking a cure,” he concluded.

He advised the public to adopt healthier dietary habits, exercise regularly, and monitor blood pressure and blood sugar levels. These preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of kidney disease and improve overall well-being. The session ended with prayers and optimism for UNS Hospital’s goal of providing comprehensive kidney transplant services. Through education and collaboration, the hospital remains committed to offering the best healthcare for kidney patients in Indonesia.

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital held another session of its “Healthy Dialogue” (Dialog Sehat) program to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day 2025. UNS Hospital broadcast this discussion live on its Instagram and YouTube channels. The program titled the session Understanding Pulmonary TB in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). The event took place on Monday (24/3/2025). It aimed to raise public awareness about tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus, two prevalent diseases in Indonesia.

dr. Linda Soebroto, Sp.P., a Pulmonology Specialist at UNS Hospital, moderated the session along with two expert speakers:

Dr. Hendrastutik Apriningsih, dr., Sp.P (K), M.Kes., FISR, Pulmonology Consultant at UNS Hospital.

dr. Berty Denny Hermawati, Sp.PD., FINASIM, Internal Medicine Specialist at UNS Hospital.

Both specialists provided in-depth insights into TB and DM, covering their causes, symptoms, and preventive measures.

Understanding Tuberculosis (TB)

Dr. Hendrastutik explained that Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes tuberculosis, a bacterial infection. The public commonly refers to this disease as ‘lung spots. While it primarily affects the lungs, it can also spread to other organs such as the bones, kidneys, and brain.

“Indonesia has the second-highest TB cases in the world after India. Public awareness is crucial to enable early detection and immediate treatment,” she emphasized.

She also clarified a common misconception. People do not inherit TB, instead, they contract it through droplets from coughing or sneezing. Vulnerable groups include children under five, whose immune systems are still developing, as well as the elderly over 60. Additionally, individuals with comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, and HIV are more susceptible due to weakened immunity.

Diabetes Mellitus: Causes and Prevention

dr. Berty highlighted that diabetes mellitus, often called ‘kencing manis,’ is a metabolic disorder that causes high blood sugar levels. It occurs due to insufficient insulin production, impaired insulin function, or both.

“Unlike TB, diabetes is not contagious. However, genetics plays a significant role. Research indicates that close family members have a 30% chance of developing DM. Children of two diabetic parents face a 50% risk,” she explained.

Lifestyle choices greatly influence the risk of diabetes. Poor dietary habits combined with a lack of physical activity contribute significantly to its onset. To prevent diabetes, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential. Some key recommendations include:

Eating a balanced and nutritious diet.

Exercising regularly.

Maintaining proper hygiene and health routines.

Managing comorbidities effectively through regular check-ups and medication adherence.

By adopting these habits, individuals can strengthen their immune systems and reduce the risk of both TB and diabetes mellitus.

This Healthy Dialogue session provided valuable insights into TB and DM. It encouraged the public to be more proactive about their health. People can effectively manage these diseases through early detection, proper treatment, and a healthier lifestyle. UNS Hospital remains committed to raising awareness and promoting better healthcare for the community.

UNS – Many Muslims face bad breath during fasting in Ramadan. This occurs due to reduced saliva production, which leads to bacterial growth in the mouth. Dr. Risya Cilmiati Arief R., drg., M.Si., Sp.KG., is a Dental Conservation Specialist at UNS Hospital in Surakarta. She emphasizes saliva’s crucial role in preventing bad breath. She shares its importance in maintaining oral health.

“Saliva acts as an antibacterial agent. When saliva production decreases, bacteria thrive, causing unpleasant breath,” Dr. Risya explained.

Although bad breath is a natural occurrence while fasting, several effective strategies can help maintain fresh breath throughout the day.

1. Stay Hydrated with the 3-2-3 Rule

Hydration is essential in preventing dry mouth, which contributes to bad breath. Dr. Risya suggests following the 3-2-3 hydration rule:

Three glasses of water at iftar (breaking the fast)

Two glasses before bedtime

Three glasses at suhoor (pre-dawn meal)

This practice keeps the mouth moist and promotes saliva production, reducing the risk of bad breath during fasting.

2. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Proper oral care is key to preventing bad breath. Dr. Risya recommends brushing your teeth twice a day, especially before bed and after suhoor. Additionally, flossing helps remove trapped food particles that can cause bacterial growth.

“Food debris left between teeth fosters bacteria, leading to bad breath. Brushing and flossing effectively prevent this issue,” she added.

3. Choose the Right Foods and Avoid Smoking

Diet plays a significant role in maintaining fresh breath while fasting. Dr. Risya advises consuming fiber-rich foods and fresh fruits, which help clean the mouth naturally. She also recommends avoiding foods that cause bad breath, such as onions, garlic, and petai (stink beans).

Smoking worsens bad breath by drying out the mouth. Therefore, quitting or reducing smoking during Ramadan is highly beneficial.

4. Seek Medical Help If Bad Breath Persists

If bad breath continues despite good oral hygiene and a healthy diet, Dr. Risya advises seeking medical attention. Persistent bad breath could indicate underlying health issues, such as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

“If the problem persists, consult an internal medicine specialist to check for possible digestive disorders,” she explained.

Final Thoughts

By following these practical tips, you can minimize bad breath during fasting and enjoy a more comfortable Ramadan. Maintaining oral hygiene not only enhances confidence but also contributes to overall well-being. Hopefully, these expert tips will help make your fasting experience fresher and more enjoyable!

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital held a “Dialog Sehat” program to commemorate World Bipolar Day. The event carried the theme “Bipolar Disorder and Childhood Trauma: Understanding the Hidden Connection.” dr. Lisetiawati, Sp.K.J., a psychiatrist from UNS Hospital, served as the speaker. dr. Adhinda Sekar Ayu hosted the discussion and streamed it live on UNS Hospital’s YouTube channel.

What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings. These shifts include manic episodes, marked by excessive energy, impulsive behavior, and euphoria. Depressive episodes, on the other hand, involve deep sadness, loss of interest, and hopelessness. dr. Lisetiawati described bipolar disorder as having two opposite poles. One side represents immense joy, while the other reflects profound sadness.

Prevalence and Risk Factors

Bipolar disorder is common, particularly among adolescents. Several factors contribute to its development, including age, genetics, and environmental influences. Adolescents are more vulnerable due to biological and emotional changes. Genetics also plays a crucial role, as the risk increases significantly when one or both parents have the condition. Environmental stressors, such as traumatic experiences, can also trigger symptoms.

The Impact of Childhood Trauma

A history of childhood trauma significantly increases the likelihood of developing bipolar disorder. Traumatic experiences can negatively affect brain development. These include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, exposure to domestic violence, and bullying. The hippocampus and amygdala regulate emotions and stress responses. They may become more sensitive to stress, making individuals more vulnerable to bipolar disorder. Emotional abuse is the type of trauma most commonly associated with this condition.

Recognizing Bipolar Disorder Symptoms

Identifying the symptoms of bipolar disorder is crucial for early intervention. Manic episodes bring excessive euphoria, heightened energy, and a decreased need for sleep. They also lead to impulsive behaviors and, in some cases, psychotic symptoms like hallucinations and delusions of grandeur. Depressive episodes bring persistent sadness, fatigue, and a loss of interest in daily activities. They also cause feelings of worthlessness or guilt, appetite and sleep disturbances, and even suicidal thoughts.

Treatment and Recovery

Bipolar disorder requires long-term management, and a single doctor’s visit is not enough for treatment. Medication, including mood stabilizers and sometimes antidepressants, is essential for controlling symptoms. Psychotherapy also plays a vital role in treatment. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps individuals manage negative thought patterns, while Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) focuses on emotional regulation. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) enhances self-awareness, and family therapy strengthens support systems at home.

Family support is crucial in maintaining stability for individuals with bipolar disorder. dr. Lisetiawati emphasized the importance of understanding the condition. She also highlighted that providing consistent emotional support can greatly help patients cope with their symptoms.

Raising Awareness and Reducing Stigma

The “Dialog Sehat” event aimed to educate the public that bipolar disorder is more than just mood swings. With proper understanding and treatment, individuals can lead fulfilling lives. UNS Hospital hopes to reduce stigma and discrimination against individuals with bipolar disorder through awareness programs like this. It also aims to foster a more inclusive and supportive society.

The discussion carried the theme “The Noise You Consider Normal Can Damage Your Hearing.” dr. Rini Kartika Dewi, Sp.THT-KL, an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) specialist at RS UNS, served as the speaker. dr. Hasraprilliana Hersya, a general practitioner, moderated the session. The UNS Hospital YouTube channel broadcasted the event live.

The Hidden Dangers of Noise Exposure

Many people underestimate how everyday noise can damage their hearing. dr. Rini explained that exposure to sounds exceeding 85 decibels (dB) can cause permanent hearing loss. This noise level is equivalent to the sound of a medium-sized truck. Prolonged exposure increases the risk, yet symptoms may not appear until years later.

Noise-induced hearing loss depends on internal and external factors. Medical conditions like hypertension and diabetes affect blood circulation in the ears, increasing vulnerability. Certain ototoxic medications can cause permanent hearing damage. Anatomical factors, such as ear canal length, also influence noise sensitivity.

External factors significantly contribute to hearing impairment. Factory, construction, and music industry workers face frequent exposure to high noise levels. The widespread use of earphones and True Wireless Stereo (TWS) devices worsens the issue. Prolonged exposure to high volumes gradually weakens auditory function.

Early Signs and Prevention Strategies

Noise-induced hearing loss occurs when the auditory nerves suffer damage, classifying it as sensorineural hearing loss. One of the earliest warning signs is tinnitus, a persistent ringing sensation in the ears. Some individuals may also experience balance disorders, such as dizziness when changing positions. dr. Rini emphasized that early detection through audiometric exams is crucial, as it allows for timely intervention before the damage becomes irreversible.

To minimize risks, she recommended the 60-60 rule. Users should limit audio device use to 60 minutes daily at no more than 60% volume. She warned that excessive vibrations damage cochlear hair cells. Sustained exposure to high decibel levels can harm auditory nerve synapses, causing permanent impairment.

Protecting Hearing in Work and Daily Life

People frequently exposed to loud environments must take protective measures. The Regulation of the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration (PER.13/MEN/X/2011) sets noise exposure limits for workers. This regulation emphasizes the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Earmuffs reduce noise by 40-60 dB and offer better protection than earbuds. Concert-goers should use them for optimal safety.

Regular hearing screenings are essential for prevention. Workers exposed to high noise levels should take Audiometry and Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) tests yearly. These tests help monitor their hearing threshold.

Available Treatments for Hearing Loss

People with significant hearing loss can manage the condition with various treatments. Psychotherapy strengthens emotional resilience. Hearing aids help maintain communication and reduce the social impact of hearing impairment. Speech therapy supports language and hearing rehabilitation when speech ability is affected.

“With early detection, prevention, and proper treatment, we can protect our hearing health,” dr. Rini concluded. “These efforts help us maintain a good quality of life.”

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret Hospital (UNS Hospital) hosted a special edition of Healthy Dialogue to celebrate Ramadhan 2025. UNS hospital streamed the session, titled “Comfortable Fasting, Safe Stomach,” live on its YouTube channel on Thursday (27/2/2025). This event aimed to educate the public on how to fast safely while managing gastritis and other digestive disorders.

dr. Frieska Dyanneza, M.P.H., hosted the session and introduced dr. Coana Sukmagautama, Sp.PD., M.Kes., FINASIM. dr. Coana specializes in internal medicine and gastrointestinal endoscopy at UNS Hospital. As Ramadhan approaches, many Muslims with gastric issues question whether fasting benefits or harms them. Some believe fasting improves digestion, while others worry it worsens stomach conditions.

Understanding Gastric Disorders and Their Causes

dr. Coana explained that various factors, including food choices, stress, and bacterial infections, can cause gastric problems. Gastritis falls into two main types. Organic gastritis occurs when ulcers, erosions, or lesions develop in the stomach lining, causing pain and discomfort. Functional gastric disorder happens when the stomach looks normal but struggles with motility, leading to bloating and fullness. Some individuals experience both conditions together, which doctors call mixed gastritis.

Fasting may offer relief for those with functional gastric disorders, as it allows the stomach to rest and improves motility. However, those with ulcers or lesions require extra caution. Consulting a doctor before fasting is essential, as the severity of the condition varies for each individual.

Practical Tips for Safe Fasting with Gastritis

Individuals with functional gastric disorders can manage fasting with proper preparation. dr. Coana emphasized that mental readiness plays a crucial role. Setting a strong intention helps individuals adjust psychologically. A well-planned suhoor (pre-dawn meal) is essential for a smooth fasting experience. People should eat in a relaxed manner instead of delaying suhoor until the last minute. They should choose foods that are easy to digest. Spicy and acidic foods, along with coconut milk dishes, can trigger excess stomach acid. Those taking gastric medication should consume it during suhoor as their doctor prescribes.

When it comes to iftar (breaking the fast), food choices can be more flexible. However, moderation remains key to preventing gastric discomfort. Eating too quickly or consuming excessive portions may put unnecessary strain on the digestive system. Another important consideration is avoiding the habit of lying down immediately after suhoor or iftar. Since food remains in the stomach for about two to four hours, lying down too soon can cause acid reflux and increase discomfort. Engaging in light physical activity, such as walking, after suhoor can help reduce stress. Stress is a significant contributor to worsening gastritis.

Pain tolerance differs among individuals. Some can manage mild discomfort by drinking warm water or applying a warm compress. Severe pain that disrupts daily activities or causes symptoms like vomiting blood requires immediate action. People should stop fasting and seek medical advice in such cases.

Fasting and Gastric Health: Key Takeaways

Fasting does not have to be a limitation for individuals with gastric disorders. Those with functional gastric issues may benefit from fasting. Individuals with ulcers or severe digestive conditions should get a medical assessment before fasting. Proper dietary habits, good sleep management, and stress reduction can minimize discomfort. These practices help create a more fulfilling fasting experience.

UNS Hospital launched this educational initiative to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 3. This goal promotes good health and well-being. The hospital provides practical health information to help the public observe their religion while maintaining good health.

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital in Surakarta held a Health Dialogue to raise cervical cancer awareness commemorating World Cancer Day 2025. The event, themed “Don’t Underestimate Cervical Cancer! Early Detection Saves Lives,” aimed to educate Indonesian women. It focused on the dangers of cervical cancer and the importance of regular check-ups. The hospital broadcasted the event live on its official Instagram and YouTube channels on Monday (10/2/2025).

dr. Kartika Noviastuti, M.P.H., a doctor at UNS Hospital, hosted the session. The dialogue featured dr. Elita Rahmi, Sp.OG., an obstetrics and gynecology specialist, as the guest speaker. The discussion focused on cervical cancer, its causes, symptoms, and prevention. dr. Elita emphasized that cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among Indonesian women. It ranks second after breast cancer. Cervical cancer occurs when malignant cells develop in the cervix, also known as the cervix uteri.

Causes and Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

“A persistent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection in the cervix primarily causes cervical cancer,” dr. Elita explained. Unlike uterine cancer, doctors often detect it in its late stages. However, they can identify cervical cancer earlier due to the presence of precancerous lesions. These are abnormal cervical cells that have not yet turned cancerous but may develop into cancer if left untreated.

Feelings of embarrassment and discomfort about undergoing medical examinations, especially those involving intimate areas, often prevent women from getting checked. In reality, cervical cancer screening requires cooperation between patients and healthcare professionals. If any symptoms arise, it is essential to seek medical evaluation as soon as possible for early detection.

She further elaborated that common symptoms of cervical cancer include:
✔️ Abnormal vaginal discharge
✔️ Bleeding outside of the menstrual cycle
✔️ Bleeding after sexual intercourse

However, dr. Elita warned that cervical cancer does not always show clear symptoms. Therefore, regular screening is crucial for early detection.

The Importance of Screening and Early Detection

Many women still hesitate to undergo cervical cancer screening due to fear or embarrassment. “Often, women ignore early symptoms, and as a result, the cancer is detected at a more advanced stage,” dr. Elita added.

Several factors contribute to the disease. However, early detection plays a key role in prevention.

How to Prevent Cervical Cancer

dr. Elita recommended Pap Smear and Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) tests as effective screening methods. These tests are available at public health centers (Puskesmas) at affordable rates or through Indonesia’s BPJS Kesehatan healthcare program. Cervical cancer is more common among women who are married or sexually active. HPV vaccination is highly recommended before becoming sexually active.

“The earlier cervical cancer is detected, the higher the chances of survival. While complete recovery is not always guaranteed, early detection significantly increases the likelihood of living cancer-free,” dr. Elita concluded.
