This training aimed to enhance community skills, open up business opportunities, and promote eco-friendly products.

UNS — Students from the Special Education Study Program of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta organized a community training program on producing natural dishwashing soap for residents of Gadingan Hamlet, Trunuh Village, South Klaten, on Saturday (9/5/2026). The activity was attended by 24 local women residents and was also joined by the Head of Neighborhood Unit (RW 04) and local community leaders.

The training program aimed to enhance community skills in utilizing natural ingredients that are easily found in the surrounding environment and transforming them into environmentally friendly household products with economic value. Through hands-on practice sessions, participants were introduced to every stage of producing natural dishwashing soap, ranging from ingredient preparation and mixing processes to product packaging.

This initiative formed part of a community empowerment program initiated by UNS Special Education students under the theme “Strengthening Family Economic Independence through the Production of Natural Soap in Gadingan Hamlet.” Beyond serving as a safer and eco-friendly household alternative, the program was also designed to open opportunities for small-scale home-based businesses within the community.

Head of the Impactful Learning Grant Team, M. Husain Yassar, explained that the activity emerged from the community’s need for practical skills that could be directly applied in daily life.

“Through this training, we hope that the women of Gadingan Hamlet will not only gain new knowledge, but also be able to utilize these skills both for household needs and potential home business opportunities,” M. Husain Yassar told uns.ac.id on Wednesday (13/5/2026).

Participants demonstrated great enthusiasm throughout the activity. They actively took part in demonstrations and practical soap-making sessions alongside the student team. The products are expected to be independently utilized by the community while also serving as examples of household products made from natural ingredients.

The activity contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.

Through this initiative, UNS students hope to encourage greater public awareness regarding the importance of environmentally friendly products while simultaneously strengthening family economic independence through simple, practical, and sustainable skills.

UNS — The Pencak Silat team of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has achieved remarkable success on the international stage. At the 25th Belgian Open Pencak Silat Championship 2026, held in Scooten, Belgium, from April 24–26, 2026, the UNS team secured a total of 8 medals, consisting of 2 gold medals, 3 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals.

The UNS team, composed of 8 athletes and 1 official who also served as the team manager, delivered a solid and spirited performance. Most of the athletes are students who previously demonstrated outstanding achievements at the National Student Sports Week (POPNAS), bringing strong competitive experience to the international level.

The Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Research, and Student Affairs of the Faculty of Sports (FKOR) UNS, Dr. Rony Syaifullah, M.Pd., stated that this achievement is clear evidence of the quality of athlete development at UNS, particularly within FKOR, which consistently encourages students to excel not only at the national level but also internationally. Participation in this championship also aligns with the university’s commitment to achieving Key Performance Indicators (IKU), especially in enhancing student achievements at the international level.

“With that spirit, the athletes underwent intensive training for approximately one month at FKOR UNS. The training program focused on improving techniques, match strategies, physical conditioning, and mental readiness to face opponents from various countries,” Dr. Rony explained.

The journey to the championship was not without challenges. However, these obstacles did not diminish the athletes’ and coaching team’s determination. Through close collaboration with FKOR UNS, a cost-sharing scheme was implemented to ensure the team’s participation. Support from external parties in the form of sponsorship also played a crucial role in making this international participation possible. The synergy between the university, faculty, and sponsors highlights the importance of collaboration in supporting student athletic achievements.

Throughout the competition, the UNS athletes demonstrated high fighting spirit, discipline, and commendable sportsmanship. Each match was approached with careful strategy to achieve the best possible results. The medals earned are not only individual achievements but also a source of pride for the institution and Indonesia.

This accomplishment is expected to inspire other UNS students to continue striving for excellence and to compete confidently on the global stage. It also further strengthens UNS’s position as a university committed to fostering student potential across various fields, including pencak silat. UNS extends its congratulations to the team for bringing honor to both the university and the nation.

UNS – Joost Groothuijse, an inbound internship student at the Urban Rural Design and Conservation Laboratory (URDC Labo), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, has made an outstanding academic achievement. He was awarded the title of Best Presenter at the International Conference on Business, Accounting, Supply Chain, and Logistics (ICBASL) 2025, recognizing his exceptional presentation and research performance. This achievement highlights the success of the UNS internship program in fostering international collaboration and academic excellence.

ICBASL 2025 by LPPM UNS

The International Conference on Business, Accounting, Supply Chain, and Logistics (ICBASL) is an annual international forum organized by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Indonesia. The ICBASL 2025 is a premier event that gathers scholars, practitioners, industry leaders, and policymakers worldwide to discuss innovative strategies in business, accounting, finance, and supply chain management. This year’s conference emphasizes advancing these fields in the era of sustainability and global transformation.

Carrying the theme “Smart and Resilient Supply Chain and Finance for Sustainable Growth,” ICBASL 2025 highlights the role of digital transformation, sustainable practices, and financial resilience in shaping future business landscapes. The conference features keynote speeches, panel discussions, paper presentations, and networking sessions that foster collaboration and knowledge sharing. It also offers opportunities for participants to publish in reputable journals and engage in international research partnerships supporting sustainable and inclusive business ecosystems.

Joost’s Journey toward His Achievement

Joost’s journey toward this achievement began when he arrived in Solo at the end of August this year. He is a Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences student, pursuing an internship at UNS. Coming from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Joost embarked on this journey as part of his university’s international internship network.

Joost explained that his university offers a wide range of international internship opportunities, and Indonesia had long been on his list of places to visit. “At the end of last year, my university offered several options for international internships through its global network. I’ve always wanted to visit Indonesia, and since Water Management students from my program have been coming here (UNS) for about eight years, it felt like a safe and familiar choice with mentors who already understand our background. Also, I think Solo is a good destination to experience the real Java, a smaller and more authentic city compared to larger, more touristic cities like Jakarta or Yogyakarta,” Joost said to uns.ac.id on Friday (24/10/2025).)

Furthermore, Joost explained that his participation in ICBASL 2025 was suggested by his mentor, who encouraged him to gain early experience in academic presentation. She advised that presenting at such a conference would be valuable preparation for writing scientific papers in the future, especially if he plans to pursue a master’s degree or a PhD. Through this opportunity, Joost was able to learn how academic conferences operate and observe how other researchers deliver their presentations. He viewed the experience as essential in developing his confidence and professional skills. Interestingly, Joost and his fellow interns were the only student participants among the many scientists attending the event.

Joost shared that becoming the Best Presenter was a rewarding experience that reflected his practical presentation skills. He believed his success was mainly due to the strong visual elements he incorporated into his slides, which made his presentation more engaging and easier to understand. Unlike many other participants who relied heavily on text, Joost used images and visual explanations to communicate his ideas clearly. This approach and his confident oral delivery helped him stand out and earn the Best Presenter title.

Moreover, Joost explained that he presented a paper entitled “Community-Based Assessment of Canal Water Quality in Gentungan Village: Identifying Pollution Sources and Improving Canal Water Quality”. In his presentation, he analyzed the causes of water pollution in the area and proposed strategies to improve canal water quality. His research aimed to raise awareness of the importance of effective water management in local communities. “Water management is a major field in the Netherlands, yet it remains underdeveloped in many other countries. So, I think sharing the knowledge with local communities is essential,” he emphasized.

Joost conducted his research in Gentungan Village, focusing on environmental and social aspects of water management. He divided his study into two main parts: the physical analysis of the area’s water flow and the behavioral research of the residents. Through this approach, he aimed to understand how water moves through the village and how human activities affect its quality.

Joost is currently working to complete his research and aims to finish it as soon as possible. “So, I first needed to understand the community’s behavior and daily practices related to water use and waste disposal. After that, I planned to create awareness posters showing how these actions impact the river system. My goal is to give something back to the community by promoting awareness and encouraging better environmental practices,” he concluded.
Humas UNS

UNS–Two intelligent international students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) competed as Team 28. They proudly secured first place at the Dojo Science and Genomics World Champions 2025. They are Sylvia Aulila Lugereka from Tanzania (Master’s Degree in Public Health) and Nuha Amer Al-Aghbari from Yemen (Doctoral Degree in Public Health). They successfully won among 22 teams, which qualified from 60 teams from all over Indonesia, based on their success in three Dojo minicamps over the past 4 months.

What is Genomics Science Dojo?

The Genomics Science Dojo is a program supported by the British Embassy in Jakarta and was first launched in 2024. It aims to enhance researchers’ capacities in genomic data analysis and health sciences to support more effective decision-making. It welcomes individuals of all genders, backgrounds, and persons with disabilities (PwDs) to participate.

“The program is structured in different waves of participants, where each person works on a project, usually a manuscript. The participants must defend their ideas in front of the opponents. This program also trains participants in publishing, article reviewing, and understanding the peer-review process. And the selected participants will receive support to publish their work in reputable journals,” Sylvia explained to uns.ac.id on Wednesday (4/6/2025).

Sylvia added that each team was required to consist of two members and that the program was fully funded. All participants received financial support, including flight tickets, accommodation, meals, local transportation, and more. The Genomics Science Dojo 2025 began with an online workshop on May 15-16, followed by an in-person minicamp at Novotel Cikini Jakarta on May 19-22. The program concluded with the Shinjitsu Grand Tournament on May 23.

The competition consisted of three cycles. There were Cycle 1, Cycle 2, and Cycle 3. Eight teams were selected from each cycle to advance to the Shinjitsu Grand Tournament. Initially, 24 teams were expected to compete in Jakarta, but only 22 participated.

During the workshop in Jakarta, participants also joined the Shinjitsu Ninja Challenge, a series of tasks completed sequentially. The challenge included abstract writing, data visualization, and peer review critique. This challenge was an advantage for Sylvia and her teammate as it was newly introduced in Cycle 3, the cycle they were part of.

Sylvia Shares Her Experience

Sylvia and Nuha were the only international student team in the competition, while most participants were Indonesian. Sylvia doubted their chances of winning, as most other participants came from more specialized fields like biotechnology and genetics. In contrast, she and Nuha had a public health background and used secondary data from IFLS. “But it turned out to be a great experience because we could defend our ideas and attack our opponents,” she added.

The competition was intense and stressful. Sylvia recalled the pressure of not knowing their next opponent, which meant they had to prepare constantly. Each team created presentation posters, so participants had to quickly study their opponents’ materials, identify weaknesses, and formulate arguments. Initially, they had no expectations of winning, but after defeating their first and second opponents, they decided to take the competition more seriously.

Throughout the program, their team was mentored by Dr. Edward, who guided them in defending their ideas, what to say, and what to avoid. Participants were also allowed to consult other doctors present at the event. This mentorship was a valuable support system for many teams.

Sylvia admitted she was surprised they won, considering most participants were Master’s or PhD students or professionals, while only few were undergraduates. To prepare, she studied Nuha’s topic thoroughly. They divided their roles, with Nuha answering questions from the opposing teams and Sylvia focusing on attacking opponents’ arguments. Their intense collaboration played a key role in their success.

Sylvia Encourages UNS Students to Join

Sylvia strongly recommends that other UNS students participate in the Dojo Science and Genomics World Champions program, especially those in science fields. She believes the experience is valuable for building confidence and developing critical thinking skills. In addition, selected participants have the opportunity for free research publication, which is highly beneficial.

“I highly recommend UNS students, especially those in science, to join this program next year. It builds confidence. In the debate competition, you’re challenged with unexpected questions that require critical and quick thinking. Another benefit is the chance for free publication, which is a rare and valuable opportunity,” Sylvia concluded.

Humas UNS

UNS – A group of students from the History Teacher Professional Education (PPG) Program at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta organized Kibas. Kibas stands for Kilas Balik Sejarah Melalui Suara. It was an inclusive history learning initiative in collaboration with the Difalitera.org community. The event took place at Omah Buku Bahagia, Kartasura, and gathered 15 members of the Difalitera community, UNS academics, and volunteers.

Inclusive History Learning Through Audio

Kibas was specifically designed to present historical narratives in audio format. It allows visually impaired individuals to access and enjoy history education. Carrying the theme “History Speaks for All,” the event featured storytelling sessions. It introduced local Surakarta figures such as Brigadier General Ignatius Slamet Riyadi and Duke Mangkunegoro VII.

Nur Fatah Abidin, S.Pd., M.Pd., a History Education lecturer at UNS, led the interactive discussions that followed the storytelling session. Prof. Dr. Leo Agung, M.Pd., and supervising lecturer Dr. Sutiyah, M.Pd., M.Hum. also attended the event.

Raka Kumara Jati, a PPG History student and chair of the organizing committee, explained that the event aimed to promote equitable access to history learning. He emphasized that visually impaired individuals should have the opportunity to gain historical insight. They should also have access to appreciation through formats tailored to their needs.

“Through this program, we learned how to create an inclusive event. We also realized the value of making a difference through small actions. We also wanted to show that people can enjoy history not only through text but also through sound,” Raka stated. “We hope to raise awareness that history education should be accessible to everyone.”

To increase engagement, the event included a bingo quiz. The response from participants exceeded expectations. The visually impaired attendees actively asked critical questions and contributed significantly to the discussions.

Community Engagement and Lasting Impact

Indah Darmastuti, the founder of Difalitera, praised the initiative. “This event was not only a platform for learning history but also a valuable moment of connection for our community. We hope to see more inclusive activities like this in the future, covering a wider range of themes,” she said.

Kibas is part of a leadership project by PPG UNS History students. As part of the project, the students are also producing historical podcasts and will upload them to Difalitera.org. This effort has successfully promoted inclusivity while enhancing historical literacy among the visually impaired.

Hope and Sustainability

Through this initiative, the PPG History student group hopes to inspire the academic community to continue supporting inclusive education. “We want to emphasize that our friends with disabilities are equally capable of engaging in academic discussions. They can also enjoy history learning,” Raka added.

This project has made a meaningful impact with strong collaboration and effective management. It has influenced not only the Difalitera community but also society at large. The students hope to expand this initiative by covering more local historical figures and reaching broader communities across Indonesia. HUMAS UNS

UNS – Students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held an eco-enzyme workshop in Jatisobo Village. The event took place in Polokarto District, Sukoharjo Regency. It was part of their commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production. The initiative was also part of the Community Service Program (KKN), funded by the Independent Learning Grant (Hibah Pembelajaran Merdeka).

The event occurred on Sunday (4/5/2025). It involved 72 members of the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group from RT 2 RW 4 of Jatisobo Village. The UNS student team included ten members. They were Arief Kurnia Pambudi, Arilistya Kurniawan, Alifia Nadiatun Najiiha, Debby Asti Septina, and Eka Tias Ambarwani. Other members were Endyas Miftakhuljannah, Mohammad Nauffal Dzhiyaul Haq, Nurista Ayu Soutul Haqiqi, Yumna Alhay Munajaeti, and Zefanya Widyasari.

The workshop opened with a presentation highlighting the importance of managing organic waste through sustainable and eco-friendly practices. One effective method introduced was eco-enzyme production. This fermented liquid, from fruit and vegetable scraps mixed with brown sugar and water, offers multiple benefits. People can use the resulting liquid as a natural cleaner, organic fertilizer, and a plant pest repellent.

Promoting Household Waste Management

A live demonstration followed, where students guided the participants through each step of the eco-enzyme production process. They explained how to select ingredients, measure the correct ratios, and store the mixture in fermentation containers. The participants responded enthusiastically. They asked questions and actively joined the discussion.

In the next session, the team explained how to apply eco-enzymes in daily life, particularly for home gardening. For example, 30 ml of eco-enzyme diluted in 2 liters of water can serve as a natural fertilizer. This practical knowledge aims to reduce reliance on industrial chemical products and promote the reuse of household waste.

To mark the event’s success, the student team presented a bottle of fully fermented eco-enzyme to Ms. Ika, head of RT 2 RW 4. This symbolic handover served as an example for the community and encouraged them to begin eco-enzyme production at home.

“Thank you for the knowledge you’ve shared. We used to throw away kitchen waste like vegetable scraps and fruit peels. However, the eco-enzyme process gives them new value. I hope the women in our neighborhood can try this at home and benefit from it,” Ms. Ika said.

Community Enthusiasm and Long-Term Impact

This activity is part of the broader UNS KKN Hibah Pembelajaran Merdeka program. It aims to bridge academic knowledge with real community needs. The program uses a scientific and participatory approach. It promotes university research and strengthens local capacities to address environmental challenges.

Furthermore, the initiative supports SDG 12 by promoting sustainable behavior at the grassroots level. The students introduced simple technologies like eco-enzyme production. This has laid the foundation for a long-term shift toward environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyles. HUMAS UNS

Introducing SOLID: A Sustainable Solution for Landslide Mitigation

UNS — Two innovative students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) competed as the “Go To Japan” team. They proudly secured second place in the Infographics subcategory at the 2025 Student Scientific Festival (Festival Ilmiah Mahasiswa/FILM). They are Aditya Wisnu Yudha Marsudi (Undergraduate Physics) and Desnia Anindy Irni Hareva (Undergraduate Statistics). They impressed the judges with SOLID (Solar Panel-Powered IoT-Based Landslide Detection). SOLID is an eco-friendly and sustainable system designed to detect potential landslides.

“We wanted to address the serious issue of landslides in Indonesia. This natural disaster endangers around 40.9 million people living in 918 vulnerable zones. To respond to this, we developed SOLID, an innovative and environmentally friendly detection system,” Aditya explained to uns.ac.id on Thursday (24/4/2025).

SOLID combines energy-efficient solar panels with IoT technology, sending real-time alerts via WhatsApp to residents within a 10-kilometer radius. The prototype uses solar panels as its main power source. It also includes a lithium battery to provide backup energy when sunlight is unavailable.

The system includes three key sensors: soil moisture, slope inclination, and ground displacement. SOLID reads real-time data from these sensors. It issues three alert levels—“Alert,” “Warning,” and “Danger”—through WhatsApp. The system uses parameters set in the Arduino IDE to determine the appropriate alert.

Advanced Forecasting and Physical Alarms

Beyond real-time alerts, SOLID uses a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm to forecast landslides up to 14 days in advance. This early warning allows more time for evacuation and mitigation. In addition, the system features a physical alarm—buzzers and strobe lights—for immediate on-site awareness.

The team developed their project with valuable guidance from Dr. Ir. Sorja Koesuma, S.Si., M.Si. He provided insights on landslide indicators and technical aspects. “His mentorship provided a strong foundation. Over two months, we worked intensively on both the infographic and the SOLID prototype,” Aditya said.

Recognition at FILM 2025 and Future Aspirations

FILM 2025 hosted three main categories: Essay, Scientific Writing (LKTI), and Infographics. The event gathered over 1,800 participants from 114 universities in 22 provinces across Indonesia. The UNS team competed under the “Technology” sub-theme. It aligned with the festival’s theme: “Innovative Synergy of Youth in the Society 5.0 Era to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Towards Golden Indonesia 2045.”

The competition included several selection phases, from proposal submission to semifinal and final presentations. Finalists showcased their innovations in an expo, an award ceremony, and a gala dinner.

“We’re incredibly honored to win in our first-ever national infographics competition,” Aditya shared. “This experience taught us the value of collaboration, creativity, and research in delivering impactful visual communication.”

He also encouraged fellow students to take on new challenges. “Believe in yourself, utilize your team’s strengths, and don’t hesitate to innovate. Every challenge is a chance to grow,” he added.
