UNS – A team of students from the Faculty of Engineering (FT) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has achieved national recognition. They were Muhammad Yazid Ar-Rasyid (Chemical Engineering) and Sarah Amelia Azzahra (Industrial Engineering). They won the Runner-Up title in the National Essay Competition at Cipta Nusantara Fest. The competition took place on April 26, 2025, at Universitas Riau.

The competition drew more than 400 teams from universities across Indonesia. After a rigorous selection process, Yazid and Sarah advanced to the finals, competing with eight other top-ranked teams. Their dedication and creativity helped them secure second place.

Innovative Essay on Cocoa Waste Technology

The FT UNS team presented an essay titled Natural Sunscreen Development Based on Cocoa Waste with Smart Jar Glass Technology. Their innovation focused on creating environmentally friendly sunscreen from processed cocoa waste.
This creative concept offers dual benefits. Environmentally, it promotes sustainable waste management. Technologically, it introduces an innovative method using Smart Jar Glass to enhance the product’s functionality. The project stands as a unique contribution to both health and environmental fields.

Support and Inspiration from FT UNS

Yazid first discovered the competition through Instagram and felt instantly motivated to join. “The process was both challenging and exciting. From the preliminary round to the finals, we gained valuable insights, especially in research and presentation skills,” Yazid shared, as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id on Friday (2/5/2025).

He also highlighted the strong support received from FT UNS. Academic advisors and faculty leaders encouraged the team throughout the process. “We received great encouragement from our lecturers, which helped us reach this achievement,” he added.

Yazid and Sarah hope their success will inspire fellow students to explore new opportunities and boldly take initiative. “Don’t be afraid to start—by starting, you’re already opening a path toward success,” Yazid concluded.
This accomplishment proves once again that FT UNS students continue to excel. They demonstrate not only strong academic abilities but also creativity and competitiveness on a national scale. Furthermore, their achievement supports the goals of Quality Education (SDG 4) and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9). It reinforces UNS’s commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.

UNS – The Center for Engineering Education (CEE) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta hosted a workshop “From Practice to Publication in Engineering Education.” The event took place in the Senate Meeting Room of the Ir. RPM. Kasifudin Building on April 16–17, 2025. It attracted 35 participants eager to improve their skills in writing and publishing scientific papers in top engineering education journals.

Opening Remarks and Workshop Goals

Prof. Dr. Ir. Wahyudi Sutopo, S.T., M.Si., Dean of FT UNS, officially opened the workshop. He emphasized that society must address the challenges of digital transformation and industrial revolution through more than just technological advancement. Researchers and academics must also contribute by documenting their work through academic publications.

“Engineering education is not just about technology. It also involves transforming the teaching and learning process into knowledge that educators can share globally through publication,” Prof. Wahyudi stated, as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id on Monday (21/4/2025).

Insights and Practical Sessions from Experts

Two academics from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Dr. Nurzal Effiyana Ghazali and Dr. Noor Farahwahidah, served as the main speakers. They shared their experiences of turning teaching activities and learning innovations into scholarly publications. Over the two-day workshop, participants engaged in a mix of material sessions and hands-on practice. The sessions covered everything from generating ideas and organizing article structure to simulating the drafting process.

Moreover, Dr. Noor Farahwahidah, familiarly known as Dr. Farah, highlighted the importance of self-confidence when getting started.

“The workshop participants showed great enthusiasm, and this forum served as a solid foundation to start, grow, and evolve. Engineering education is a new topic for many participants, so we didn’t just focus on theory. We emphasized building confidence to write and publish research,” she explained.

Dr. Nurzal added that consistency, a supportive environment, and the right collaborators can significantly enhance writing productivity.

“A supportive environment, such as a community with shared goals, can boost our productivity in writing and publishing research. The right partner can even help steer us in a better direction,” she noted.

Participants’ enthusiasm was particularly evident during discussion sessions, Q&A segments, and group writing exercises. With intensive guidance from the speakers, attendees not only grasped the theoretical aspects. They also succeeded in drafting scientific articles ready for further development and eventual publication.

Cooperation Agreement Signing at Central Java Governor’s Office

On Monday (17/3/2025), Governor Ahmad Luthfi personally signed the cooperation agreement. The signing took place alongside dozens of university rectors at Grhadika Bhakti Praja, the Central Java Governor’s Office in Semarang.

Governor Luthfi emphasized that this collaboration seeks to optimize the roles of the government and universities. The partnership will focus on education, research, and community service to drive regional development.

“This agreement aims to maximize the potential of Pemprov Jateng and universities. It also seeks to strengthen the synergy of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. This is part of our commitment to regional progress,” Luthfi explained.

He also highlighted the importance of active involvement from universities beyond formal agreements.

“This partnership should go beyond signing MoUs. We urge universities to take an active role in developing Central Java for long-term progress,” he added.

Expanding University Involvement in Regional Programs

In recent years, regional development efforts have focused on collaboration between central and local governments. However, the new initiative includes academic institutions to strengthen the synergy.

Governor Luthfi noted that academics have been supporting government programs for the past five years. Moving forward, their role will become even more significant.

University rectors and their teams across Central Java will monitor several key programs. This cooperation goes beyond MoUs, as universities actively engage in thematic partnerships to oversee various initiatives. It includes:

Village development and rural potential mapping

Support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)

Desalination projects to provide fresh water for coastal communities

“Academic institutions in our region will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of these development programs,” Luthfi stated.

UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has appointed Prof. Dr. Ir. Wijang Wisnu Raharjo, M.T., as a professor. He specializes in Advanced Material Engineering Technology. His inauguration marks him as the 38th professor at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) and the 354th professor at UNS.

University leaders, lecturers, and guests attended the inauguration ceremony at the G.P.H. Haryo Mataram Auditorium. During the event, Prof. Wijang delivered his inaugural speech titled “Nature-Based Advanced Materials: A New Hope for Sustainability.”

Academic and Professional Background

Born in Surakarta, Prof. Wijang has a distinguished academic career. The P2I and Pertamina Scholarships funded his studies. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) between 1987 and 1993. He pursued his Master’s studies at UGM from 2000 to 2003 with support from the DIKTI Postgraduate Scholarship. He then completed his Doctoral studies at UGM from 2013 to 2018 through the same program.

His professional journey began in the industrial sector, working at PT Astra Agro Niaga (1993-1995) and PT Pison Agung (1995-1999). In 1999, he joined UNS as a lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering and has remained dedicated to academia. Since 2024, he has served as the Head of the Master’s Program in Mechanical Engineering at FT UNS.

Advancing Sustainable Materials

In his speech, Prof. Wijang addressed pressing global environmental challenges, including air pollution, water contamination, global warming, and resource depletion. He emphasized the urgent need for eco-friendly materials to mitigate environmental damage.

One promising solution is natural fiber composites. These materials blend plant fibers such as bamboo, sisal, and water hyacinth with polymer matrices. These materials are biodegradable and require less production energy. They offer an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic fibers like glass or carbon fiber.

However, challenges remain. Natural fiber composites exhibit variations in mechanical properties, high moisture absorption, and low compatibility with polymer matrices. To enhance their quality, researchers are modifying fiber surfaces through chemical and physical treatments. They are also integrating nanomaterials, such as nanocellulose and carbon nanotubes, to strengthen composite structures and improve durability. Additionally, researchers are exploring bio-based matrices like polylactic acid (PLA) as alternatives to non-biodegradable polymers.

Industry Applications and Economic Potential

Natural fiber composites have gained traction across various industries, including:

Automotive: Used for interior panels and sound insulation to reduce vehicle weight and carbon footprint.

Construction: Contributing to energy-efficient buildings.

Healthcare: Applied in biodegradable medical implants and devices.

Indonesia can develop natural fiber composites by leveraging its abundant natural resources. However, researchers and industries must address challenges such as fiber quality variations and inefficient production technology. Prof. Wijang urged the government, industry, and academia to collaborate. He emphasized that their partnership is crucial for advancing the development and utilization of these materials.

A Sustainable Future

“Natural fiber composites offer a promising solution to environmental challenges while unlocking new economic opportunities,” Prof. Wijang stated. “Support from the government and industry is essential to expand these innovations.”

With strong collaboration, researchers and industries can use these sustainable materials to contribute to a greener future. As a professor, Prof. Wijang will drive research and innovation in nature-based advanced materials, benefiting both society and industry in Indonesia.
