UNS – The Center for Engineering Education (CEE) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta hosted a workshop “From Practice to Publication in Engineering Education.” The event took place in the Senate Meeting Room of the Ir. RPM. Kasifudin Building on April 16–17, 2025. It attracted 35 participants eager to improve their skills in writing and publishing scientific papers in top engineering education journals.
Opening Remarks and Workshop Goals
Prof. Dr. Ir. Wahyudi Sutopo, S.T., M.Si., Dean of FT UNS, officially opened the workshop. He emphasized that society must address the challenges of digital transformation and industrial revolution through more than just technological advancement. Researchers and academics must also contribute by documenting their work through academic publications.
“Engineering education is not just about technology. It also involves transforming the teaching and learning process into knowledge that educators can share globally through publication,” Prof. Wahyudi stated, as quoted from ft.uns.ac.id on Monday (21/4/2025).
Insights and Practical Sessions from Experts
Two academics from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Dr. Nurzal Effiyana Ghazali and Dr. Noor Farahwahidah, served as the main speakers. They shared their experiences of turning teaching activities and learning innovations into scholarly publications. Over the two-day workshop, participants engaged in a mix of material sessions and hands-on practice. The sessions covered everything from generating ideas and organizing article structure to simulating the drafting process.
Moreover, Dr. Noor Farahwahidah, familiarly known as Dr. Farah, highlighted the importance of self-confidence when getting started.
“The workshop participants showed great enthusiasm, and this forum served as a solid foundation to start, grow, and evolve. Engineering education is a new topic for many participants, so we didn’t just focus on theory. We emphasized building confidence to write and publish research,” she explained.
Dr. Nurzal added that consistency, a supportive environment, and the right collaborators can significantly enhance writing productivity.
“A supportive environment, such as a community with shared goals, can boost our productivity in writing and publishing research. The right partner can even help steer us in a better direction,” she noted.
Participants’ enthusiasm was particularly evident during discussion sessions, Q&A segments, and group writing exercises. With intensive guidance from the speakers, attendees not only grasped the theoretical aspects. They also succeeded in drafting scientific articles ready for further development and eventual publication.

Agus Mujianto, a lecturer at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur and a doctoral student in UNS Mechanical Engineering, shared his impressions.
“This workshop has truly broadened my perspective. I used to focus mostly on technical research. But here, I learned that I can turn even teaching activities into high-quality academic writing. The approach was very practical and easy to follow,” he said.
The workshop concluded with remarks from Dr.techn. Ir. Sholihin As’ad, M.T., Head of CEE FT UNS. He expressed appreciation to all speakers and participants for their commitment to advancing engineering education. Dr. Sholihin reaffirmed that the event aligns with CEE FT UNS’s broader vision. This vision focuses on building a collaborative and productive academic ecosystem, particularly in engineering education.
“We hope this program will not only train participants. It will also lead to the production of engineering education books that can support the faculty in delivering better technical education,” Dr. Sholihin said. Through this workshop, CEE FT UNS aims to encourage more lecturers and researchers in the engineering field. It seeks to inspire them to share their teaching experiences and innovations through academic writing. We expect best practices from classrooms and laboratories to inspire, serve as references, and contribute to the global engineering education community.
