Islam Politic in History of Surakarta

SOLO – The flurry of  traditional Kingdom politics from Demak to Mataram involve Islam in the vortex of politic. That is said by Prof. Dr. Hermanu Joebagio, M. Pd in professor inaugural ceremony, Thursday (25/4/2013), at Auditorium Sebelas Maret University (UNS).

The professor of Political Science of Islam history said that Islam is not an ideology power of the country, but grass root powers. Those powers are risky to be oppressed by the ruler of the government if they are in contrast towards the government political.

Raden Patah with his concept umur al-dunya-umur al-din applied the separation of world affairs and religion. “Through  his concept, Raden Patah hoped the elites will stand for the ethics and morality of politic; trading activities become economic power of the country; elites and clergy will strengthen the encouragement of political mass of Demak,” said Hermanu. Consequently, there is an equality between the king and clergy.

However, this concept is opposed by Syekh Siti Jenar who hoped there were no involvements of clergy in political practice.   it is concerned that it will perpetuate illahiah power concept. Then, in Amangkurat I and Amangkurat II eras, the equality of politic is dissolved. The king run absolute practice with secularism frame which did not share politic participation rooms for the people.

“As the result of political opression, clergy polarization aroused, for instance. bureaucrat clergy and non-bureaucrat clergy. The bureaucrat clergy lived in the palace and subordinated by powers, while non-bureaucrat clergy were away from the center of power, and became a cultural broker villager society,” he said.

The existence of illahiah power practices make all of the economy and politic areas were controlled by the politic elites ; and the politic structures were far away from economical empowerment efforts and political developments. It cost the emergence of liyan or the otherin social life relation which was used by Netherland governments to weaken the politic powers of citizenry and protect their business capital.[]
