UNS – Students from the Civil Engineering Study Program at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta have secured 3rd place in the International Stable and Sustainable Structure i3SC Competition 2024, held at Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Malaysia. This achievement was announced during the final night held at the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Perlis, JPS Complex, Perlis, Malaysia, on Saturday (8/6/2024).
The UNS team representing the university in this competition consisted of Baron Pranoto, Farid Nur Affandy, Farrel Titan Pramita, Kevin Liu, and M. Hafiya Fawaidilhaq, all of whom are Civil Engineering students from batch 2021. The team was directly mentored by Dr. Achmad Basuki, S.T., M.T., the Head of the Civil Engineering Study Program at FT UNS, in preparation for the competition.
The International Stable and Sustainable Structure i3SC Competition tests the abilities of Civil Engineering students from various countries in constructing structures. This year’s competition focused on designing and building wooden bridge structures.
“The competition was divided into two stages. First, we were required to draw a sketch of the structure within 30 minutes, including all dimensions and details. Then, we proceeded to assemble a 1,4-meter-long bridge prototype within 180 minutes, or 3 hours,” Kevin explained.

Kevin further detailed that after the 3-hour assembly period, their bridge, along with those of teams from other countries, underwent testing. The results were quite satisfying as the UNS team’s bridge was able to withstand the maximum required load of 100 kg.
The UNS team proved their excellence by competing with top universities from other countries, including Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).
“This competition was very memorable for us because it was the first time we represented the UNS Civil Engineering Study Program on an international stage and achieved a notable result. Additionally, we competed against top universities such as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Universiti Teknologi MARA. We are grateful for the proud outcome we have achieved for UNS,” Kevin concluded.
