UNS — Bright achievement was again accomplished by the students of Faculty of Medical Science (FK) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. On Saturday (12/2/2022), three students from the Medicine Education Program won two places and a Favorite Poster in the National Poster Competition. The team was consisted of Tyasno Koeshermanto, Vina Sari Nugrahaning Widi, and Tamara Maulidya.
The competition titled World Cancer Day Competition (WCDC) 2022 was held by Komunitas Mahasiswa Peduli Kanker (Kompak) FK Universitas Udayana (Unud). The poster they submitted contains education on lung cancer prevention. The team wanted to improve community awareness of lung cancer through their poster. “Thus, the poster also included information on the symptoms and risk factors (vulnerable groups) that (people) need to be aware of,” Tyasno explained on Monday (14/2/2022).
Further, Tyasno explained that the risk factors of lung cancer are, among others, over 40 years old, active smoker, a record of lung disease, exposure to carcinogenic materials, and family history of cancer. The team stated that they chose to create the poster because Indonesia was ranked 1st in new lung cancer incidence in men population in 2020.
“Even the mortality rate of lung cancer in Indonesia is higher than Asian and global average. Lung cancer could be detected after entering stadium 3 or 4, marked with observable symptoms. Stadium 1 and 2 usually showed no symptoms besides coughing, and people often underestimate cough,” the team added.
Therefore, the team wanted to participate in the preventive measures in reducing lung cancer cases, especially for people with risk factors.
The team stated that they were delighted when knowing that they won 2nd place and the Favorite Poster on Saturday (12/2/2022) announcement. The team admitted that they did not expect to win over 59 participants in the competition. They hoped that they could develop their ideas into a poster that could benefit the community further. The team also hoped that their poster could help press the number of lung cancer cases as the number 1 killer among other types of cancers. Humas UNS
