UNS — Architectural Engineering Program Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta complete its preparation to open the Architect Professional Education Program (PPAr). These efforts are supported by a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the Vice Chairman of the Educational Unit National Board of Indonesian Architect Association (IAI), Ar. Suwardana Winata, IAI. The FGD was held online and attended by more than 50 participants.
Dr. Untung Cahyono, as the Head of Architectural Engineering Program FT UNS, stated that the opening proposal had been submitted to the Dean and Rector, and funding for the program has been secured. The opening also has a positive opportunity with UNS new status as PTNBH. “(Thus), the permit to open new program does not need to go through Dikti, but only at UNS level,” he added, Monday (28/6/2021).
Ar. Suwardana explained that architectural education is the beginning for a person who wants to be an architect. In Indonesia, this education takes five years, four years of bachelor’s degree, and one year of PPAr. After graduating, the prospective architect goes through a minimum of 4,000 hours of internship as regulated by IAI to ensure a structured and comprehensive internship program. After completing their internship, the prospective architect will go through an examination.
IAI allows the internship program to be divided into two periods to accommodate students’ financial capability. The interns will have a fully built project at the end of their internship. This project cannot be infrastructure with a minimum area of 200 square meters and a high-rise building. The project can be from a mentor or apprentice and could involve a supervisor from a different profession.
“The prospective architect is expected to be mature and responsible through their internship program. Sometimes they even put (their knowledge) into practice,” Ar. Suwardana said.
IAI provides discretion in terms of curriculum for universities that open PPAr while considering the requirement and complexity of the internship project.
“We only make sure of two things. First, the studio should attempt to have a real project. Then there are no complexity components that cannot be assessed because students need to pass the architectural examination next,” he explained. Humas UNS
