UNS — Since March 2020, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) has instructed all schools and universities to hold their learning process online. This instruction was issued as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The policy succeeded in reducing the spread of Covid-19 in the community but brought new issues for rural schools, such as SDN (Public Elementary School) 2 Tremes, Wonogiri District.

Students not having a smartphone and the poor and unstable internet connection in the village hindered the learning process. As mentioned by the Headmaster of Kepala SDN 2 Tremes, Theresia Setyowati, “Our learning in SDN 2 Tremes is implemented through WhatsApp and faces many issues because the signal is not good, not all children have a phone, and limited internet quota for the learning process.”

This condition encouraged Student Community Service Program (KKN) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta Group 311 to conduct tutoring for students. After coordinating the headmaster, teachers, and staff, the Group decided to target students in third, fourth, and fifth grade. Each class is divided into two sessions of offline learning under strict health protocols.

“The morning session starts from 08.00 to 09.00, and the second session starts at 10.00 to 11.00,” Gaizka, the person in charge of the program, explained.

The tutoring started on 11 August 2021 to 24 August 2021. The activities including helping students completing their assignments or homework and teaching materials that might be hard to understand through online explanation.

The Group, supervised by Dr. Mujiyo, M.P., also held several competitions to increase children’s spirits in commemorating the 76th Independence Day. The competitions are reading geguritan, self-expression photo challenge, singing contest, coloring contest, drawing contest, and cursive writing. Although the competition was held online, students showed high enthusiasm and submitted laudable works.

The tutoring was concluded on 24 August 2021, a week before the KKN program was concluded. The Group members are Dany Farel E. A (Development Economics Program) as Group Leader, Devi Novitasari P.W (Accounting Program), Ranita Restu N. A (Biology Program), Aulia Arifa (Physics Education Program), Dwi Meisari (Physics Education Program), Endika Sofya P (Chemistry Education Program), Qonita Luthfiyyah (Biology Education Program), Aditya Bagas C (Geography Education Program), Bagas Yulianto (Javanese Literature and Language Education Program), and Gaizka Mahdafikia (Sports Coaching Education Program).
