UNS — Student association (UKM) Brahmahardhika Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a national webinar discussing plastic waste processing into eco brick.
The webinar was held on Saturday (22/1/2022) with Shanti W. Ramadhani, M.Pd., the founder of Sanggar Hijau Indonesia, as the speaker in the event. Shanti mentioned that plastic wastes that were dumped, burned, or stored, will spoil the soil, water, and air.
“By storing, sorting, and packing it into a bottle, we could make eco brick that are reusable. We could build green areas that enrich the community and secure plastics from our biosphere. We move from plastics into a greener life that is more in tune with the earth cycles,” she explained.
Shanti added that reducing the use of plastic could save the earth, but eco brick could be adopted as a means to solve the existing plastics issues. She followed her explanation with the steps of creating eco brick.
“Firs, collected, sorted, cleaned, and prepare all types of plastics. Then choose the same bottle brand and size, put soft plastic with colors into the bottom of the bottle and as the construction of an eco brick building,” she continues.
The next step is cutting dried, and cleaned plastics put them into the bottle. She also suggested weighting the eco brick to meet the quality standard.
“The minimum density according to GEA standard is 0.33 g/ml and a maximum of 0.7 g/ml. The minimum weight is bottle volume multiplied by 0.33,” she concluded. Humas UNS
