UNS — Chemical Engineering and Physics Faculty Members of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta in Advanced Materials and Energy Storage Research Group held community service on Tuesday-Wednesday (29-30/6/2021). The event has “Lithium Battery Electric Bicycle Assembling Training” as a theme and was attended by seven students and seven teachers in the Vocational High School (SMK) Muhammadiyah 6 Karanganyar. This offline event was held under a strict health protocol.

The UNS team consists of Tika Paramitha, M.T., Dr. Adrian Nur, Arif Jumari M.Sc., Dr. Endah Retno Dyartanti, Anatta Wahyu Budiman, Ph.D., Dr. Eng. Hendri Widiyandari, Inayati, Ph.D., and Prof. Agus Purwanto, assisted by students of Master Program in Chemical Engineering Faculty of Engineering (FT) UNS, and the members of Center for Excellence (PUI) Electrical Energy Storage Technology UNS. Arif Jumari, M.Sc., opened the material session with an explanation on lithium battery production technology. Besides providing offline presentations, this session was also shared through the Zoom Cloud Meeting application.

Arif Jumari, M.Sc., explained that lithium battery is one of UNS faculty member’s research that has been applied to various tools. “For an electric motor, electric bicycle, street lighting, power bank, and many other tools,” he explained. In his material, Arif Jumari, M.Sc., also explained the types of battery cathode, lithium battery shapes, and stages of production. The stages of production are explained to describe UNS’ lithium battery mini-plant, whose production stages include production of active electrode materials, electrode slurry mixing, electrode sheet manufacturing, battery assembly, and battery testing.

The presentation was followed by an explanation of the conversion process for a manual bike into an electric bike. The additional components needed for this conversion, such as electrical motor, battery, controller, pedal-assist, handle gas, display monitor, and handle rim, were explained to the participants. The next activity was a demonstration of the electric bike assembling process. The electric bicycle assembled in this training used a lithium battery produced by UNS.

After watching the demonstration, students were allowed to assemble their bicycles following the instruction from the UNS team. The assembling training is held to reduce the gap between knowledge and practice as the school does not have the equipment to put the learning into practice.

Chemical Engineering and Physics Faculty Members UNS Lithium Battery Electric Bicycle Training for SMK Muhammadiyah 6 Karanganyar Students and Teachers

The program was expected to improve students’ and teachers’ understanding of lithium battery and their skills in assembling electric bikes. According to the speakers, this kind of training is vital for students to enter the Industrial Revolution 4.0 in line with the government policy to develop electric vehicles. Humas UNS
