UNS — 8 March is commemorated as the International Women Day, which observed ‘gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’ as this year’s celebration theme.
Celebrating the special day, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, through its UNS Innovation Hub (I-Hub), held a sharing session through an Instagram live stream on Women in Business: Working for Start-up is Tough, but We are Tougher on Monday (7/3/2022).
The sharing session invited Aurelia Salsabila Putri, an alumnus of UNS from the Industrial Engineering Program, Faculty of Engineering (FT). Aurelia has devoted herself to Start-Up and Business management and successfully started an education Start-Up to hold the young generation in their personal and professional journey. Aurelia is expected to inspire the participants as the representation of a successful woman who has broken the gender bias against women in the community.
However, Aurelia shared that gender discrimination still exists and affects women, although luckily, she has no firsthand experience of the event. But she heard stories from her friends that made her feel the existing discrepancies.
“To this day, I still observe gender bias that harms women. Women are still considered to ‘cannot do more. The is also limited means to hone their potential. This is why women find it hard to develop,” Aurelia stated.
Aurelia stated that gender should not matter because no matter the gender, people need mindset, toughness, skills, and mentality in responding to everything.
“Gender is not important. We need to create awareness on free gender discrimination environment,” she concluded. Humas UNS
