UNS — A delightful news came from the Statistics Study Program students, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (MIPA) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta. The three succeeded in winning first place in the National Essay Competition (LKTIN) National Agricultural Extension Student Summit (NAESS) organized by the Agricultural Extension & Communication Student Association (HM Pelita) Faculty of Agriculture (FP) UNS. The three students are Muhammad Zidni Subarkah, Awalia Agustina Khoirunisa, and Christy Sheldy Sucipto incorporated into a ‘Meteor Melesat (Dashing Meteor)’ team with Kiki Ferawati, S.Si., M.Stat., as their supervisor.
Zidni, as the team leader, admits that he is happy and thankful for the result. “Alhamdulillah, I am grateful and never expect this result when it was first announced. Other than that, we also thankful because all of our efforts are paid off,” Zidni reveals.
Participating in this virtual national competition, the team reveals that they want to improve their experience in essay writing and critical thinking. In the beginning, 70 teams are participating in the registration and abstract submission. Later the top 10 teams are selected. Finally, the UNS team is determined as the winner on Tuesday (30/3/2021). Zidni’s team proposed an essay entitled Harvest Month: Digital Agriculture Meteorological Platform using Rainfall Data with High Order Fuzzy Time Series Method to Prevent Crop Failure (Case Study in Bogor Municipality).
“Our research is about a digital platform called Harvest Month. This platform is a predicting system based on rainfall data using the high-order fuzzy time series method. The platform also offers disaster prediction and commodities recommendations according to the current weather condition. This feature is in line with our objective to assist the farmers in reducing losses due to crop failure,” Zidni explains.
Preparing for the competition, the team needs five days to prepare the abstract and ten days to prepare the full paper. All the discussion was done virtually since the team members are staying in different cities. All their achievement is possible with the support and inputs from their supervisor.
Representing his team members, Zidni hopes to collaborate with other students to realize their idea. “We hope to collaborate with our fellow students to implement this idea, thus creating a useful platform for the community, especially the farmers,” Zidni hopes. Humas UNS
