UNS — A rare moment occurred in the first Doctoral Promotion Open Examination in Sports Science Faculty of Sports (FKOR) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, for Sulistiyono on Tuesday (22/6/2021) through the Zoom Cloud Meeting.

In the examination, Sulistiyono was required to present his dissertation on “The Development of Training Model Based on the Experience Learning to Develop Skills and Characters of Football Students in 9 -12 Years Old (Study of Development in Football School in Sleman District)” in front of well-known national examiners. These examiners are the Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) RI, Dr. Zainudin Amali, Rector of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, Rector of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), Prof. Sumaryanto, and Rector of Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa), Prof. Nurhasan.

Dr. Zainudin Amali, Prof. Sumaryanto, and Prof. Nurhasan acted as external examiner, while Prof. Jamal acted as the chairman of the board of examiners.

In his presentation, Sulistiyono explained that his study has a background on the young footballers’ training that is more focused on winning during a competition. He also considered other factors such as the low performance of the Indonesian National Football Team during the last 30 years and unsportsmanlike behavior of the players in League 1, League 2, and League 3, who often perform hard tackles that injure other players.

“Besides that, we often see a fight between players in a competition which is unsightly, even in an educational perspective,” Sulistiyono stated.

Sulistiyono also revealed the trainer’s views and opinion on the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) concept. He mentioned that most trainers in Sleman District understand the LTAD concept but do not understand its application or implementation in the daily, monthly, and annual training process. Sulistiyono added that character or how athletes act during training and match as a vital part had not been implemented in structured training. “And the document on training plans (curriculum, plan, daily training) have not mentioned character,” he added.

Sulistiyono’s study also included small-scale testing, medium-scale testing, large-scale testing, and effectiveness test to measure and assess the development of training models based on games experienced learning. The small-scale testing was conducted on SSB Real Madrid Foundation UNY with four trainers as product assessors. The trainers rated 91% for the model and >80% scores for players, indicating that the model is feasible for large-scale testing. On the large-scale testing in SSB KKK Matra and Satria Sembada Sleman, with nine trainers, the results show 90.44% for the model and > 80% for each game. From these results, games experienced learning model is feasible for the effectiveness test.

The effectiveness test showed several results. Based on the ANCOVA and paired t-test analysis, the games experienced learning model significantly affected SSB student’s (9-12 years old) skills and characters. The training model is also more effective than the conventional training model in improving student’s skills and characters. With this finding, Sulistiyono graduated cumlaude with a GPA of 3.80 (out of 4.0), and the first doctor graduated from the Doctoral Program in Sports Science FKOR UNS.

After completing the examination, Sulistiyono admitted that this moment is a special event. He felt proud and delighted because his doctoral study was attended by Menpora and three Rectors of Public Universities in Indonesia.

“This is amazing throughout my career. To the best of my knowledge, there have been no students examined by state officials with a track record as sports experts. This is a surprise for me. I am sure that my parents are proud, my institution is proud, and my friends are also proud,” he concluded. Humas UNS
