UNS — The Geography Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a Community Service Workshop on “Improving MGMP IPS SMP Surakarta Teacher’s Capacity to Identify the Disaster-Prone Area Using Disaster Application in Natural Disaster Learning Materials”. This community service program was held in Building C FKIP UNS, 6-8 April 2021.

The workshop was held in collaboration with the Meeting for Subject Specific Teachers (MGMP) in Social Sciences (IPS) at Junior Highschool (SMP) level Surakarta. The workshop was attended by the Head of Geography Education Program FKIP UNS representative, Dr. Sugiyanto, and the Chief of MGMP IPS SMP Kota Surakarta, Samsul Hadi, M.Pd.

The first material on “Introduction on BMKG Application and Magma Indonesia” was delivered by Seno Budi Ajar, M.Si. This topic was discussed because there is a chance that residential areas occupied by people will experience dynamic changes, including significant changes. Seno Budi Ajar, M.Si., added that disaster occurs because of natural and cultural causes. “Human need to participate and to adapt to the environmental changes or the impact of environmental changes, the disaster,” he added.

He also explained that the community could participate in natural disaster mitigations before a disaster, during the disaster, and after the disaster. Further, he stated that BMKG and Magma Indonesia applications provide information on volcanic, tectonic, and meteorology-related disasters, which can be used as learning materials for SMP students.

Geography Education Program FKIP UNS Held Workshop on Disaster-Prone Area Identification

Continuing the first discussion from Seno Budi Ajar, M.Si, the following speaker, Lintang Ronggowulan, M.Pd, explained her material on “InaRisk Application Introduction”, an application created by the National Board for Disaster Mitigation (BNPB). This app contains information on an area’s danger level and provides recommendations of action as participative anticipation.

“InaRisk is created with the ability to evolve and meet our need on data, information, and methodology updates that will benefit the society,” Lintang explained.

She hopes this application will assist the community to be actively aware of their surroundings. Thus, the vision to create Indonesia that resilient in a disaster can be achieved. Humas UNS
