UNS — The Mathematics Study Program Student Association (Himamia) Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta organizes a scientific webinar. On this occasion, Himamia invited two speakers, namely Muhammad Salman Al-Farisi, S.IP., and Dr. Revi Gama Hatta Novika. The webinar that took place on Sunday (19/9/2021) was held through the Zoom Cloud Meeting platform.

The webinar discusses the role of the younger generation in optimizing Indonesia’s demographic bonus through science and technology. M. Salman Al-Farisi, who is an environmental enthusiast, delivered material on Science and Technology Innovation as a Strategy for Solving Environmental Problems. He explained that the causes of the climate crisis are classified into three categories, namely personal, community, and the system or policy level.

“The most powerful factor, indeed, is at the micro or community level. Hence the impact is more massive and faster. However, the personal level also holds an equally important effect because it is the level where we can change our perspective or paradigm first. The clichéd answer for this condition often is to try to give the best practice or examples that are relevant to your audience,” explained Salman.

In the case of the community, it must first be understood who the audience is. If the message can be adjusted, then it can be easily understood by the audience.

“If we look at Jakarta, Semarang, Bali, and Banjarmasin, there are policies that prohibit single-use plastic bags. It is an incentive policy from the government not to use single-use plastic bags to familiarize people with not using plastic bags. It will be difficult in the beginning, but then we will get used to it and will change everything,” he added.

Meanwhile, the second speaker, Dr. Revi Gama, a lecturer at the Faculty of Medical Science (FK), UNS, explained that the comfort of breathing when wearing a mask is a matter of personal preference.

“Why we are recommended to wear double masks because previous research discovered that medical masks combined with cloth masks increase the tightness. Thus, fewer droplets pass through the layer, which can reduce our probability of getting infected with Covid-19. If you feel difficult to breathing, you can wear the N-95 masks because it has more room or spaces. If you wear the N-95 masks, there is no need to combine the mask with another layer. We can actually choose for ourselves, which one is safe and comfortable,” she explained. Humas UNS
