UNS — English Language and Literature Program Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held an international conference in communication, language, literature, and culture on “International Conference on Communication, Language, Literature, and Culture” (ICCoLLiC) on 8-9 September 2020. This year, ICCoLLiC UNS invited linguist and world translation expert, Prof. Roger T. Bell as a keynote speaker.
The conference was held online through Zoom Cloud Meeting and attended by Assoc. Prof. Mohd. Nor Shahizan Ali (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), Dr. Ujjwal Jana (Pondicherry University, India), Uswatun Qoyyimah, Ph.D. (Universitas Pesantren Tinggi Darul Ulum), Dr. Fitria Akhmerti Primasita (UNS), Dr. Dyah Ayu Nila Khrisna (UNS), and Dr. Ida Kusuma Dewi (UNS), as well hundreds of academician and researchers from various countries.
Prof. Bell in his presentation explained the importance of reverse engineering in the translation process. According to him, reverse engineering is important to be conducted by a translator because it is a reformulation of close-reading or thorough and careful reading. In addition to reading thoroughly the text source, the translator also uses their semi-automatic skill in the understanding text by opening a discussion. In this case, the translator can convert messages in the form of words into images so that the message is easier to understand.
Meanwhile, Prof. Mohd. Nor Shahizan Ali in his material discussed the result of his study on “Once Media Texts Meets Realism Through Experimental Short Film”. His study proves that adolescence understanding can easily reach the reality stage on foreign cultures in the experimental short movie “Keep Going (2016)”. This can occur in line with the influx of information and communication flows in the current digital era.
In line with the development of media and communication in the digital era, Dr. Jana emphasized that it is the time for the field of humanities study in the university to apply Digital Humanities practice with the digitization of humanities studies data. He added that the data stored in digital format will become a digital archive which is easier to access during the learning process, especially document and ancient manuscript which has limited availability.
