UNS — The increase in the number of natural disasters in Indonesia, from hydrometeorology to geological disaster nearing the end and beginning of the year, inspire Group 48 of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) Grant Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta to conduct socialization on disaster mitigation in Maron Hamlet, Dersono Village, Pringkuku Subdistrict, Pacitan District.
The disaster mitigation focuses on tsunami waves following the geographical position of the hamlet, which is included in tsunami-prone areas. The danger of tsunami waves increased in Maron Hamlet because the area has Maron River that ends in Ngiroboyo Beach, which could increase the speed of waves to reach the local housing in the event of a tsunami.
The team with ten students of the Geography Education Program held the socialization on Thursday (25/11/2021) in Maron Hamlet Hall. The team supervised by Dr. Pipit Mijayanti, S.Si., M.Sc., invited the Regional Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD) of Pacitan District to deliver materials on tsunami disaster mitigation. The team leader, Kasan Hanafi, hoped that this program could equip local people with practical knowledge to mitigate tsunami.
“Hopefully, the socialization on tsunami mitigation could provide knowledge for the local people in Maron Hamlet on the danger of a tsunami, and they could understand what needs to be done before, during, and after the wave hit,” Kasan said.
The program was attended by Maron Hamlet people and Dersono Village officers in an offline meeting under a strict health protocol. All attendees were required to wear a mask, and free masks were provided from people who did not bring the item themselves. The attendees learned about the causes of a tsunami and its process, followed by the areas with high danger levels, the impacts, and the mitigation process they need to take.
The Chief of Maron Hamlet, Dersono Village, Agus Priyanto, stated that he was delighted with the socialization program and hoped that the program would benefit the local people. He also thanked the team for their program in tourism development and education provided by BPBD Pacitan.
“Hopefully, all efforts that were made could benefit Maron people,” Agus Priyanto stated. Humas UNS
