UNS – Department of Electrical Engineering of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) brought in Prof. Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo, Ph.D., a renowned professor specializing in radar, to give a short general lecture themed “Development of Microsatellite SAR Onboard for Global Environmental Monitoring” on Friday (20/1/2017).
Professor Josh, his nickname, is an Indonesian who has received various world-class awards for his achievements. This intellect, born in Bandung, West Java, is a full professor in Center for Environmental Remote Sensing in Chiba University, Japan. Not only being a lecturer, Prof. Josh has also patented several works, many of which are already recognized. He patented micro-strip antenna, Circularly Polarized Synthetic Aperture for drones, small satellites, and three-dimensional weather-forecasting radar.

In the lecture, taking place at Building III of Faculty of Engineering of UNS, Prof. Josh explained briefly how his invention worked and has been utilized by various institutions, like how his radar and satellites are used to monitor terrain movement on disaster-prone areas so the government could predict and anticipate any disasters such as earthquakes and avalanches.
Prof. Josh also explained how the environment he has lived in influenced and inspired his experiments, like the shape of leaf, for example, which he adapted to the shape of satellites he created.
Irwan Iftadi, Head of Electrical Engineering Department of UNS expressed his statement as regards that this general lecture is a follow-up from previous meetings between Prof. Josh and the Department.
“Actually, this is a follow-up to previous meetings. There will be an MOU finalised between Faculty of Engineering of UNS and Chiba University, an agreement of which is to carry out sister university”, Iftadi closed. (Herlangga Hizkiawan/Eln/Oss)
