UNS — Community Service Program (KKN) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held offline and online does not limit students’ creativity in initiating their community service programs. One of the activities planned by Team 111 KKN UNS in Jeron Village, Nogosari Subdistrict, Boyolali District. They conducted training for Shibori production for Jeron villagers last Sunday.
The training delivered theoretical materials on the origin of Shibori and its types. The training shared materials on Shibori Itajime that uses folds of fabrics to create motives. The training is selected because the team wants to improve art experiences and provide promising business opportunities for the villagers.
“Psychologically and emotionally, the training provides positive benefits on community’s art appreciation. The participants are pleased with the training result,” Bisri Musa Azhari as KKN Team leader, explained on Tuesday (16/2/2021).
Team 111 KKN UNS invited a student of Craft Arts (Textile Design) Program UNS, Yosua Novalensi as a speaker. The materials used in this training are cotton cloth, rubber band, water glass (sodium silicate), and fabric coloring. Yosua also used a container to soak the fabric and gloves to prevent dye from sticking on hands. He explained to participants how to fold the materials and to tie them with rubber bands. A strong tie will prevent coloring from seeping too deeply into the fabric and creating structured motives. The remaining fabric should be soaked into the water glass and dye. During the interview, Bisri stated that there were no significant challenges during the program, and all participants look enthusiastic.
Besides Shibori production, the team also held a workshop on entrepreneurship as an output of Shibori production on Sunday (14/02/2021). Bisri hopes that these events can encourage the community to start a business in Shibori art, especially for the young generation, to help the local economy. “Moreover, we added online business training the next day,” Bisri stated.
