UNS – The Board of Trustees (Majelis Wali Amanat, or MWA) of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has selected three candidates for the position of rector for the 2024-2029 term during a plenary meeting on Tuesday (9/7/2024). The three candidates are Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si. (Faculty of Medicine), Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati, S.Si., M.Si. (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences), and Prof. Dr. E. Muhtar, S.Pd., M.Si., CFrA. (Faculty of Teacher Training and Education).
In a press conference at the UNS Tower Ki Hadjar Dewantara Building on Tuesday (9/7/2024), the Chairperson of MWA, Prof. Muliaman Darmansyah Hadad, Ph.D., stated that in selecting the candidates, the MWA considered input from the UNS campus community, gathered from June 25 to July 2, 2024, and reviewed work papers by panelists in the Public Examination Forum for Rector Candidates on July 2, 2024. The selection process involved deliberations, and when consensus was not reached, a written, direct, free, and secret ballot was conducted by all MWA members present at the plenary meeting.
“Each MWA member voted by circling the numbers of three rector candidates, and all members, including the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, had equal voting rights. The candidates with the first, second, and third highest votes were designated as the rector candidates,” Prof. Muliaman explained.

According to Article 31 of MWA Regulation Number 1 of 2024 concerning the Procedure for Selecting the Rector, in conjunction with Article 36 of MWA Regulation Number 4 of 2024 concerning the Rules for Selecting the Rector for the 2024-2029 Term, candidates must submit a letter of resignation from their current positions to the MWA through the Rector Selection Committee (PPR) by July 11, 2024.
“If a candidate does not submit a resignation letter, they will be considered to have withdrawn from the candidacy,” he added.
With the candidates now established, the next step is the election and appointment of the rector in a special MWA plenary meeting on July 18, 2024. The meeting will invite the candidates to present their vision, mission, and work programs to the MWA, followed by a question-and-answer session. The inauguration and oath-taking of the elected rector are scheduled for August 8, 2024, and will be broadcast live on the UNS YouTube channel.
The MWA hopes that the candidates will remain committed to maintaining unity, togetherness, and harmony throughout the selection process. The MWA also urges the entire UNS campus community to continue monitoring and overseeing the election process until its conclusion.
“The MWA hopes that all stages of the rector selection process will proceed smoothly and result in a leader who can advance UNS as we all hope,” Prof. Muliaman concluded.
