UNS — Nugroho Hasan, a student of Agricultural Extension & Communication Program (PKP) Faculty of Agriculture (FP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta Batch 2018, became an excellent student. He won several essay competitions at the national and international level, and at 21 years old, the student from Magelang hopes to be a university teacher in the future.
Hasan won three national and international essay competitions, won national poster competitions, and national project competitions twice, which brought him to be FP UNS excellent student (Mawapres) and 2nd place at the university level. The student with the motto “there is no need to be better than others, but need to be better than we imagine”, faced a challenge in selecting a major in university. His first choice was engineering, but after he failed in the selection process, he accepted his parents’ suggestion to apply for PKP.
“In UNS standalone track, I searched and only found Agricultural Extension & Communication. I did not know that FP has Agrotechnology, Agribusiness, Soil Science, Food Science, and Animal Husbandry. Thus, I was accepted into PKP. But after I studied it, I found out that it is in line with my passion for going outside and working with the community. From there, I wanted to study PKP more,” Hasan explained to the uns.ac.id team.
Hasan shared his tips for students who are accepted in the major that they do not actually like. First, to never missed classes and find campus activities through the organization, competition, and other activities. “Find a mentor to get future direction, and remember that you’re studying using your parents’ money, and it is not cheap,” he added.
In his sixth semester, Hasan took 34 semester credits to know more people and learn more skills. These credits were made possible through the MBKM Permata Merdeka program, allowing him to take courses online from other universities. “That’s why I tried to add more friends and skills from other universities; who knows, it will be different,” he said. Through the program, Hasan took an E-Marketing course from Universitas Airlangga, Family Business course from Universitas Brawijaya, Urban Farming from UPN Veteran East Java, and Governmental Management and Rural Development from Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, which are not recognized into his GPA but are included in his Diploma Supplement (SKPI).
To manage his time with the unusual number of credits in one semester, Hasan tried to multitask and prepare a schedule for his activities. Besides academic achievements, Hasan is also active in the university student associations, such as acting as the Chief of Agricultural Extension & Communication Program Student Association (HM Pelita) FP UNS, Chief in Rumah Kepemimpinan (RK) Surakarta, and an active member in the Student Executive Board (BEM UNS). His favorite is community empowerment and development communication as his passion, which he found after studying at UNS.
“When we help the community to be empowered, nature will move to empower us through someone else,” Hasan said. He also added that he is grateful to study at UNS and found his true passion on the campus. “I also could ask help to whoever and accesses are open widely,” he added. “For my fellows, UNS students, go through your study in UNS with fun. Do not feel hard because there will be many ways open when we try,” he concluded. Humas UNS
