UNS — Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta opened the nomination for UNS Jawametrik (Javametric), a global university ranking system based on the Javanese culture. This ranking aims to promote local tradition and wisdom as an ideology in developing a strategy to build the national characters.

The Rector of UNS, Prof. Jamal Wiwoho, stated that this ranking system was developed by UNS to preserve Javanese Culture, “Connecting and developing global university network,” Prof. Jamal stated in virtual Wayang Kulit puppet show to commemorate UNS 45th Anniversary on Saturday (20/3/2021). There are ten universities nominated in UNS Jawametrik this year. These universities are UNS, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Surakarta, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Indonesia (UI), Leiden University, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, Australia National University, Universitas Negeri Semarang, ISI Yogyakarta, and Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa).

The ranking system assessed 11 criteria, including institute for Javanese study, academic in Javanese study, Javanese research, literature, and collection of Javanese studies, events on Javanese culture, Javanese artifact collection, Javanese culture and norms-based activities, the use of Javanese language, an award from other institutions regarding Javanese culture, collaboration in Javanese culture program, and digitalization of Javanese culture.

The ranking was developed through UNS Center for Excellence (PUI) Javanologi and is the only one worldwide because it is based on Javanese Culture, as explained by the Chief of PUI Javanologi, Prof. Sahid Teguh Widodo, Ph.D., in a press conference on Tuesday (23/3/2021).

“This is the second declaration for a prestigious program in UNS, UNS Jawametrik 2021. The idea to develop UNS Jawametrik started three years ago. Then in 2019, there was a worldwide Javanese Diaspora meeting, and this ranking is the follow-up of that (meeting),” Prof. Sahid stated. Humas UNS
