UNS –Â A series of selection for state universities admission is officially opened by Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Menristekdikti), Mohamad Nasir, Friday (13/1/2017). Similar to the past years, there are several mechanisms for enrolling in state universities. Students may choose among National Selection for State Universities Admission (SNMPTN), in which students are selected based on their previous academic records and potential; Joint Entrace Test for State Universities (SBMPTN), which is academic selection test held nationally (paper-based or computer-based test) or Independent Examination (UM), which is a separate examination arranged at the discretion of each state university.
In his welcoming speech, Mohamad Nasir conveyed several distinctions between SNMPTN and SBMPTN in this year and last year in terms of quota. Nasir emphasized that quota for students selected through UM must not exceed 30%, although quotas for each SNMPTN and SBMPTN may exceed 30%, depending on every state university’s policy.
Meanwhile, Ravik Karsidi, rector of Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta and also chairman of SNMPTN and SBMPTN 2017 committee, explained that through SNMPTN, students are selected based on their achievements and academic portfolio so that schools must register their students through http://www.snmptn.ac.id. Ravik also added that the amount of students registered is restricted based on the accreditation of each school. A-accredited schools are allowed to register top 50% of graduating class; whilst B-accredited top 30%, C-accredited top 10%, and non-accredited schools only a mere top 5%.
