UNS — Sharia Economy Study (KEI) Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held SHERIN #1: Sharia Economic Research Incubator 2021 on “Growing Interest to Write Essay” on Thursday (29/4/2021). The event was held online through the Zoom Cloud Meeting and was attended by more than 60 participants.
Faishal Amin Abiyan, Development Economic student FEB UNS served as the moderator in the event that invited Pradana Ricardo, a Faculty of Cultural Studies (FIB) UNS student, as speaker. Pradana is an excelling student with various achievements, such as 1st winner in KMP UGM Essay Competition 2020, 3rd winner in Tolerance Essay Writing Competition UIN Sunan Kalijaga 2020, and 2nd Runner Up in United Arab Emirates PPI Literacy Week Essay Competition 2020.
“I hope this sharing can facilitate my fellow students to gain more knowledge on essay writing,” Nimas, SHERIN Chief Executive mentioned.
Prada opened the discussion by a general introduction to an essay that is a writing based on reliable data and sources. An essay consists of three parts, introduction, discussion, and closing. For Pradana, a good introduction explains an issue from general to specific. Issues surrounding Industrial Revolution 4.0, Era Society 5.0, Indonesia Golden Era 2045, and SDGs 2030 are often discussed in an essay.
The discussion, Pradana emphasized that it should provide a detailed explanation, show the advantages of discussed issues, and illustrate the idea’s implementation. In writing discussions, writers need to pay attention so as not to plagiarize their sources. Therefore, employing the paraphrasing method in describing their ideas. The closing part contains the conclusion and reaffirmation of the discussed ideas. Closing should be delivered shortly, concisely, and clearly.
“Because closing is the ‘gong’ (red: gamelan instrument) of an essay. Thus, try to write it clearly, shortly, and concisely,” he explained.
Pradana also shared tips in selecting an idea to discuss in an essay by reading, consulting with teachers and friends, and learning essays of previous winners. He uses the ATM method, or Amati (observe), Tilik (look), and Modifikasi (modify) previous winner’s work as reference. Humas UNS
